Actually, the bug-eyed bread-truck abomination was not the Europa. It was
the Elite (or Esprite, or something like that).

After you do a fresh install of Windows and update it, connect the disk
to your handy-dandy linux system (with a disk larger than the one with
Windows on it) and execute:

dd if=/dev/windows-disk of=windows-disk.iso

Shut the Linux system down, and put the Windows disk in its computer.

Then when Windows barfs, you can quickly get back to where you were by
reattaching the Windows disk to the Linux system and executing,

dd if=windows-disk.iso of=/dev/windows-disk .

At work, I made 13 identical systems this way and only had to suffer
through the abominable Windows install once.

[MBZ] I'm selling my 1982 Mercedes Benz 300 TD wagon.

2010-09-07 Thread Keith Converse
I am selling my parents 300 TD wagon because I need money for school (yes,
they know I'm selling it).

It is a 1982 Mercedes Benz 300TD diesel wagon. The car has around 350,000
miles (the odometer broke around 300,000).

It has a few issues;

- The rear leveling system does not work
- The a/c does not work
- The dash has some cracks in it
- It has small surface rust spots fro rocks hitting it. The paint is
original, but it's not flaking.

If you have more questions about the car, please call me, text me, or send
me an email.

The car is located in Grayson, GA (a suburb on the NE side of Atlanta)

Like I said, I am selling this car for money to go to college. So, I need to
sell this car in the next week or two.

Re: [MBZ] W211

2010-09-07 Thread E M
Thanks for the info and what to watch out for.

I really enjoy cars, but more of my pleasure these days is derived from
messing about cleaning them, than laying under them and fixing them. I
enjoying "tinkering", but the days of spending the weekends working on a
car, so that I can drive it during the week are quickly passing.

I've always wanted one nice daily drive, one hobby car, and I would allow
myself one motorcycle. I have reliable daily transport, but I would like to
make that a Mercedes. I have the hobby car covered. As for the bike, it's
something I think about, but the reality of it is, I will probably allow it
to remain a fantasy. When I do dream, it's now usually about something
that's old and British, that leaks oil, rather than the latest Ducati. Mind
you, a nice BMW would look nice next to the hobby car. :-)

Thanks again.

The W211 hit the US market in 2003 and along with the W203 destroyed MB's
worldwide engineering reputation, killing sales but providing a good income
for the dealer techs on warranty work. My friend SJB bought a 2003 E500 Sport
(metallic blue, gray leather, etc.) and it was a lovely car when it was not
in the shop or dead in the garage. He is still driving the car at about 70K
miles now and it's all better after countless service visits, the last one
being a bearing replacement up front someplace, not exactly unknown on this
V-8. Covered by the extended warranty. On the other hand, my friend AC has
an '07 E320 V-6 Bluetec diesel that has been absolutely reliable.

So, after spending who knows how much on warranty claims, MB fixed the W211
9and the W203) around 2006 and it became an excellent car. Probably almost
as reliable as my W204. Anyone who spends any time hanging around any MB
dealer knows that what with the W212, W204 and W221, warranty shop orders have
cut so far back that one of the big California dealers laid off their entire
second shift.

So, buying a late W211 would be safe but could be frustrating to a car
hobbyist since there just isn't much to do except keep it clean and drive it.
Which might be a new concept for some.

The discussion was in re: Becker Europa, a mediocre but expensive model. As

Motor pretty much required at the busy launch that we typically use,
which has a fairly tight little quay and sometimes a line of boats
waiting to be recovered. Once I have a fathometer installed, I want to
try the launch at the back of our neighborhood, which is on a shallow
creek with narrow channel.

I ended up getting some proper marine grade 6 gauge cable at West
Marine, and then made a crude junction block just inside the hull.
Looks very clean, but will take a little more time to take the motor off
now. 6 gauge really is too heavy, I will replace with 8 gauge next
time.

This boat had been in outside storage for about four years, and it was
filthy inside and out, but several days of cleaning fixed that. I also
replaced both the main halyard and the jib halyard, playing bosun' mate
for a day, whipping the ends of the lines with needle and heavy carpet
thread. Never did put the boat in the water as entire family came up on
the binnacle list (sick list for you land lubbers) Monday so we just
took it easy around the house. I blame my daughter - she brought home
some new bugs from her pre-school which started last week (take note
Donald, more joys of parenthood to look forward to :) ).

Or, try WinPatrol. It's is _not_ an virus scanner. Rather it
watches the system files and directories (folders) and alerts
you to changes. Thus it is often trigged when installing new
software. But if you are _not_ installing software and it pops
up and says
."The program FooBar wants to be run as a startup. Do

you can say "no".

I find it's quite easy to train. Have it set to "none", then as
if I encounter a site that requires it, two clicks and I'm done.

I also use FlashBlock that requires a click to run each flash

2010-09-07 Thread Curt Raymond
There is a positive side to the reinstall, you know you're on a good clean OS
so it'll run fast and act nice for awhile.

In the classroom I need to reinstall Windows about twice a year, the systems
slow down massively. I *think* it has to do with constantly uninstalling and
reinstalling software. Thats on a weekly basis in there. My guess is the
uninstallers don't always do a fantastic job and the registry ends up with
errors. The machine can correct for that for some time but eventually it hits a
tipping point and things slow down.

Battery should be the same size.

As for what to look out for, the usual: Bad AC, worn out links in the rear,
worn out steering (pretty much a given above 170k miles), bad tranny. Inspect
the upper spring mounts for rust, will require using a lift. If any present,
pass. Having a spring mount fail on the highway is not a fun thing to do.

I believe this is a serious issue in Canada and the Salt Belt, less of a
problem elsewhere, but look.

[MBZ] 2 quick questions ??

2010-09-07 Thread E M
Hi Everyone,

Two quick questions.

Does anyone know offhand the case size for the battery in an '88 300E ?
Popped into a parts store, and they only had listings for the S Class. I
know the 3.0 litre engine is the same size, but I wasn't sure if the
battery, and battery shelf in both cars are the same? Their files showed a
case size #48 for the S Class. Same for the E Class ?

Anyone know of anything to watch out for with the previous generation of E
Class sedans? Can't remember the code name. From 2000 or something, to
2009. I know rust was an issue with many. Any other design faults you guys
know about? Are they best avoided all together?

First ball joint I ever replaced was on a Rabbit, as you say super easy. Second
(the only other one) was my '83 240D, it was the upper though so I just
replaced the UCA which was also relatively easy. I'm sure its harder on a 300D
because of more stuff in that area on the inside...

Re: [MBZ] M1 atf $17 for 3 quarts

2010-09-07 Thread Curt Raymond
In my area Advance Auto is where the employees too dumb to work at Autozone
go...

Needless to say even with the discount I'll pay extra and shop at my local Car
Quest where the employees aren't dumber than a box of hammers.

Speaking of which I need to change the motorcycle's oil and finally cure the
massive leak on the left side cover. Oh and replace the clutch cable that
snapped yesterday. Fortunately it broke just before we left to come home. We'd
done 120 miles in a big group and had a party, my wife's bike wouldn't start
(starter button got cockeyed in its bore and won't make contact) so some guys
helped me bump start it. I get back to my bike, pull back the clutch lever and
*TWANG* it snapped right at the lever. If I hadn't had to go through town with
many stops I might have tried it. Instead we doubled up on my wife's little
Kawi 454 to go home and get the Ranger.

On the other hand there are plenty of people who think that any used

clerk gave up on helping him, I found the broken hose in about 30
seconds by following the traces of white.

I had a bad head gasket on an 84 SD which only leaked out of the side of
the engine; the only traces were a couple of faint vertical whitish
yellow "stripes" on the block just above the oil pan (not the sump pan).
I think the stripes were deposits left behind when all the water
evaporated from the coolant.

That would work. I bought a cheap strap wrench at HF and it did the job
just fine. This work is a lot easier once you've gotten the radiator
out of the way.

25k a year is not a lot of miles for somebody who bought a new diesel, but a not

(Mitch money?) IMO. The asking price is still more than 1/4 of new.

The Quantum was like that. R&R 3 bolts and you had a new ball joint
in. I thought it was GREAT!

Am I seeing things or do the ball joints on the 140 just need to be
unbolted to be replaced? Looks like its just got a big stem that
slides into a hole held on with a big bolt. If this is true, why
the heck didnt they make all the cars this way??

I have been using MS Security Essentials on the Windows machines since
it came out, and have not "caught" anything. It did alert me to the
virus on the okiebenz.com site.
Another good practice to avoid matware if you frequently browse likely
infected sites, is to run a virtual machine for that browsing with a
differencing disk If you get infected, just restart without saving the
changes.

I work with folks who do nothing but computers, and they endorse the Microsoft
versions for computer security (Windows Firewall, Windows Defender) among
others. Free, and don't slow down your Windows operating system nearly as much
as the paid products.

My personal theory is that majority of malware is written by the same folks who
sell the antivirus software, which maintains full employment in that industry.
MS, on the other hand, already has your money and distro's the security
software for free.

My computer was attacked over the weekend by the most tenacious malware I have
seen to date. It locks down your computer--you can't open docurment, video,
IE, nothing--telling you your computer is infected and tries to direct you to a
fake antivirus site where if you buy their fake antivirus software they will
"fix" the problem they caused to begin with.  They wanted $49.95!  Just pure
extortion.

I had to wipe my hard drive and reinstall useless Windows.  I had legit
antivirus security (Shield Deluxe), but it was obviously defeated.  After
reinstalling, I now have no internet or sound--have to install drivers.  I am
typing this from work :).

I will be shlepping my CPU to Todd's house to work on installing drivers so
I can get my computer back the way it used to be.   grr.

Anyway, it is my intent to audition yet another antivirus program.   My first
program was compromised--Zone Alarm, and now my second one--Shield Deluxe
Pro--went down as well.

Any suggestions out there?  I seem to get 6 months to a year out of a security
suite before it gets penetrated.  Is this acceptable loss, as they say in the
military? I understand this version of ransomware is a particularly bad one.  I
have about   200 days left on my Shield license but I am going to move on.  It
has already been found wanting.

I looked up antivirus reviews on PC mag and CNET and the general consensus is
BitDefinder and Norton, which--according to them--has repaired its subpar
reputation in the last two yrs to become a very good system

Thoughts? I have no antivirus software on board at the moment which will not be
an issue until I get my internet connectivity back.

I've been using AMAZON to source parts lately with very good results.

My NEW starter {Made in China} for my PowerChoke was $97 + $12 shipping. That
was a very good price! The starter works fine, even had a printout of it's
current draw and other information.

Re: [MBZ] OT electrical connection for outboard motor

2010-09-07 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
