Re: [MBZ] more 140 ignorance and hate
I don't think I perrsonally drove anyone away. I rarely intervene in the general flow of the list, and what little I do say is usualy looking for tidbits of information to help with my project, or a reply to an off-topic discussion. I guess I slipped up by giving an opinion about the double pane window thing, but that is hardly a reason for anyone to fly off the handle. I have no personal issue with anyone here, I understand we all have a difference in opinion, and that is a good thing. I just can't see why this is going on right now. Re: [MBZ] RUF
I'm not sure, as the AMG catalog I have was before AMG was absorbed by Mercedes. As for the the body kits, there may be a few couple of places out there that have copied the old AMG bits. I think Ronial make or made a rim very similar to what was offered during the period by AMG. As for engine bits, I have no idea, but there are probably much better options today for such projects anyway. For what your dollar would buy you in NOS AMG parts, or used bits, you could probably do an engine swap and end up with just as a much, or more power, and replacement parts wouldn't be such a hassle either. There is a guy on YouTube who has a W123 wagon, with a 560 engine in it. Nicely done from the looks of it. I think I have the link somewhere if interested in me posting it? If you can get your hands on an older catalog by a company called (from memory, G&W), they offered all kind of kits for a variety of cars in Germany. Not sure if any company still offers bits for the W123, but at least an old catalog would give you some of the names of companies that once did, so you could then take your search to eBay and such places. Original (pre mercedes) AMG parts are pretty much made of unobtainium now, and priced accordingly. But things like old 560 engines are now plentiful, and cheap, so these projects can happen, if you have the time to invest yourself. If not, paying someone to do them can still run kind of high, even if the parts can be had cheap. Ed 300E On 18 December 2010 23:48, MG wrote: > Sounds like I may be going on an unfulfilled quest. Ok, I'm a nobody with less experience than most list member's pinky toes, but I won't stand people outright flaming. I don't care to know the exact nature of what was going on when I first joined the list, but it seems to be repeating itself. I don't know why. I don't care who started it, or their reasons. Are not we all above this? Does everything now devolve to people acting like rabid dogs? I joined this list to learn, not to get my inbox accosted with vitriolic hate. That is another great thought from down under!I love the spirit of OZ. It is so like what used to be called the American spirit! One of the fatal signs of PD (programmers' disease) is the utter inability of those infected to see how useless all the added feature creep is. While PD used to be confined to very pale kids (20 to 30 years old) who live in their parents basement and only consume pizza slid under the door and highly caffinated soda rolled under the door, confirmed cases have been present in automotive and consumer electronics employees in the past two decades. If left unchecked, PD is likely to reach international epidemic proportions within 10 years. While previously geographically confined primarily to Redmond, WA, and the SanJose, CA area, severe epidemics are now places like Stuttgart, and Munich in Germany, the entire country of Japan, and sweeping over all of Asia, including the Korean peninsula, and threatening the Indian subcontinent. Personally, I consider my labelling by the High Master of Knowledge to be a badge of honor. All of us have previously benefited from his posts when employed by Becker. Since his arrival and coronation at MumBUSA, he seems to have fallen out of touch with the rest of us poor souls left behind who are not provided with shiny new S cars (and their maintenance costs) by MumBUSA. Dieselhead proud owner of an MB older than the High Master of Knowledge, and a whole bunch of MBs scorned on by MumBUSA Not sure if I should say anything, I may be accused of being ignorant by the new high master of knowledge. Re: [MBZ] Tire decision time: 195/65!
Too early to tell but it seems that with the correct size tire on my 300TE, the tires are not wearing on the insides as much as they did with wrong size tires, which I think where 205/60. Which means they are wider and thus not really suitable unless the front end is aligned. Handling wise i would not know because I never take the car anywhere near it's limit. MB designed the suspension to be used with a certain size tire and I see no reason to think that they do not know what they are doing, when it comes to suspensions. Hendrik who finally got a chance to catch up on list mail Max Dillon wrote: I wonder how much of that difference was due to the size (195/65 vs. 205/60)? Seems intuitive that the 205/60 would have better grip dry than a 195/65, all else being equal, but I suspect that there can be wide variation from batch to batch of tires from the same maker. However, even though purchasing tires seems like taking a chance no matter how much research one does, I'll bet the quality across the board is far higher now that it was decades ago (similar to improvements in motor oils). -Max ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] more 140 ignorance
Not sure if I should say anything, I may be accused of being ignorant by the new high master of knowledge. However being a daredevil I shall try and sneak some stupidity past the overlord of automotive development information, guess if he catches me I'll cop a beating with the workshop manual of the W140 (and that's gotta hurt, especially if it includes the electronic section). Anyway I think the gripe the ignorant so and so's have is fair enough. The issue being that there are a lot of MB only parts on that car that fail eventually and trying to find a part out of a wreck is a lottery, considering that the part may fail again. Automotive development is good when it is taken one step after another but the leap between the 126 and 140 was mighty and a bit too far. As a side note the W220 also suffered from reliability problems due to more leaping. Technology is great when it works but when it doesn't and costs a fortune to fix it is a pain. I have heard stories of cars being wrecked because the accident damaged electrical equipment that is too expensive too replace, or damaged electrical lines which in turn damaged the various computers that are in a car. No, 'have never flown "for a living," except USAF. I'm also a civil engineer; after retirement from AF, I restored several old houses, including 2 Victorian mansions on National Register of Historic Places and did private, independent home inspections (mostly for buyers) for about 15 years 'til I had to quit nearly 10 years ago because of immune system/motor nerve problems (CIDP). Re: [MBZ] American Top Gear
I found Top Gear on Netflix and watched a couple of episodes (season 12, looks like 13 is not on streaming yet) last night. They can say some dirty words on Brit TV that they can't say here, and make allusions to things verboten. Quite entertaining. I watched them on the laptop, gotta get one of those boxes you can hook to the TV and watch them directly on the rabbit ears. --R On 12/17/2010 8:53 PM, Curt Raymond wrote: Anybody watching Top Gear America? Re: [MBZ] sun shade inop
I'm having both the motor mounts and the sun shade motor replaced under my extended warranty. My indy guy determined it was the motor and his lovely daughter did the phone calling to ensure both the motor mounts and the motor for the sun shade are covered. He straight up told me take it to the dealer for the sun shade repair because they are a royal PITA to mess with. Re: [MBZ] very very preliminary feeler: anyone wish to buy my 83 240D?
Brian, Your are reaching a point in your life where priorities are changing - no need to apologize. I had a similar epiphany about 6 years ago when I returned to school to complete my second degree. The reality of the situation was such that I simply did not have the time or resources to continue tinkering with my MBs. While I don't regret the change, I do appreciate not being a slave to a car or cars that need regular maintenance and repairs. I did enjoy my cars and working on them, it's just that the situation forced a change in priorities, just as yours is. The day will probably come when I return to the fold, so to speak.
