Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 64, Issue 28

2011-03-08 Thread Gerry Archer

Where did you get the new tranny for the 85? In which area do you live?
Thanks,
Gerry

From: "B Dike"
CARFAX gave conflicting answers. Need another source...
Have a 82 300CD and an 85 300CD. Both run but not like new. The 82 could
make road trips but it is a stubborn starter in cold weather. It has a
football-sized ding in the side from a driveway incident...it was parked
poorly and someone else was in a hurry...
The 85 needs a new motor, but just had the tranny replaced. The body has a
couple minor dings and scratches but cleans up nicely...very nicely.

No significant chassis problems in either car. Ride and handling is great.
Willing to sell either in pieces or whole. Bottom line for me is salvage
value plus easy to sell items. Local salvage yards are paying $170 a ton!

Ended up getting Plinkington glass and Precision gasket. The

Every time I've had a factory windshield replaced I ended up with leaks
within a year or two. Twice on a VW and once on a Dodge Caravan.

I suspect this is because of cost-cutting on the part of the glass shop
in choice of gasket. I'm going to be replacing the window gaskets
(front and rear) on my W116. I'm tempted to order gaskets from Rusty
and then have a shop do it so that if the glass breaks it's their
liability not mine. Or is this an easy enough DIY job? One reason I'd
like to do it myself is so that I can be sure that any rust under the
gasket is addressed before reinstalling.

My understanding is that Mercedes of the 123 and earlier era had 4th gear as
1:1, so fifth gear is overdrive. I don't know if that practice followed into

Re: [MBZ] '78 240D clutch rod

2011-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond
Right side, just behind the front wheel. I think its more properly the fender
liner. It looks like salt and sand and slush buildup were finally too much for
it. The other perforation is just behind the front jack point on that side,
looks like somebody jacked on the sheetmetal and put a hole in...

I have some computer chassis that are going to get hacked up for replacement
metal. Its quite thick, probably 18ga, should be easy welding.

Re: [MBZ] '78 240D clutch rod

2011-03-08 Thread Curt Raymond
Its a strange little noise...
Goes away about 20 seconds after the clutch is disengaged or once the car is
fully warmed up. Sometimes comes back if you hit a puddle. Sometimes never
happens at all, especially as its warming up outside.

I had a brainstorm today that when I thought I was going to replace the clutch
slave with the non-fitting '83 part I may have torn the gasket and just stick
the bits back in place. Maybe the torn gasket is allowing water in that makes
the noise? That might explain why it goes away and reappears semi-randomly.

Need to call Rusty.

Does the noise change if the clutch is engaged/disengaged?

Throwout bearings can get noisy

Current theory is the sound is created by two rust holes (don't tell
Dwight), one through the inner fender and one through the rocker. Both
will be addressed soon.

All the W201 manual trans have mild OD, like .79 or .82 to one, except the 16v
is 1:1 with that odd racing shift pattern. I've heard of W123 5sp, but never
actually seen one. Doesn't Euan have a 300TD 5sp? Has anybody heard from Euan

I just had a new windshield and gasket install in my '85 TD.
"Safety Inspection" is a racket...

Anyway. I looked at getting PPG glass. Decided the car did not
deserve one _that_ good.

Ended up getting Plinkington glass and Precision gasket. The
shop did some looking to find what they thought was good. I'm
pleased. With the parts and the service. There was no trouble
with the gasket or glass fitting the car.

Hi Andrew,
I don't currently need a transmission. I was interested in B.Dikes
if it was an MB factory rebuilt. I might need one some day.
Thanks,
