Subject: [MBZ] exhaust work

I pulled the exhaust off my W116 tonight. Everything unbolted easily
despite the rusty condition of the pipe itself (heavily rusted
everywhere, and perforated in several places). Had to use a hammer to
tap the junction at the turbo flex fitting but that popped off pretty
easily as well.

I ordered a new exhaust from Rusty, which arrived a few days ago.
Expensive, but really nice stuff. It was shipped without packaging,
just some foam wrap zip-tied around the pipe ends. So there are
shipping stickers stuck on all over the place, as well as MB inventory
stickers, which I'd like to remove before installing. The MB tags peel
off pretty easily, but the shipping labels are stuck on pretty well.
Does that Goo-Gone stuff work for that sort of thing? I'd like
something that won't disolve the paint. Maybe just soak with detergent
and use a plastic blade to scrape?

Speaking of the paint, there are a few scratches here and there,
presumably occurred in shipping and handling. I'd like to fill those
in. I'm wondering if I should use hi-temp paint or just something like
regular Rustoleum?

That should be good stuff. NAPA also had it on sale until the end of
Sept, I think at 5.98 a qt.

Stopped at my local Car Quest on the way home from work, they had M1
15w50 on sale for $6.50 a quart which is down from their normal
$9something. I was going to ask about Royal Purple but at that
price...

All their stock was still badged CF, I don't know if it was old

I wasn't keen about washing the title, but it made the most sense and was
also quick and easy.

I had plenty of documentation to show the chain of ownership without exception,
which helped as well.

According to the EPC, that is part number A 124 490 40 21 Exhaust Pipe.
I'd call it a resonator.

Alex, by your VIN we have on file, the EPC shows that you just have a
 pipe
  and it is $585.00.

So what's this welded to the end of the downpipe coming off the turbo,
with a heatshield between it and the floorplan? (The front of the car
is to the right in the picture; the left side of the whatever-it-is
has a flange which would connect to the center muffler if I hadn't
 taken it off.)

[MBZ] OT -- All Things Considered

2011-09-21 Thread Rich Thomas
A buddy of mine was on ATC this evening, commenting on some drug or
something, whatever the stuff is they said was in red wine that would
increase your longevity. Turns out it's BS, like I needed that as a
reason to drink red wine anyway.
