How common is wiring problems in the older cars? From what I've seen
wiring

usually lasts the life of the car in older models. In newer models its
about as good as the wiring harness.

My experience with 240D clutch MC is from 2 years ago. My son and I
spent 6 hours trying to get the MC in so we could bleed and adjust per
instructions. The critical item lacking was the ability to get the
piston high enough in the cylinder to bleed. At the time, my son
scolded me for wasting his time - on a lift at the shop where he
works, and said I would do the next install if I did not get an MC
from the dealer. I got the MC from the dealer and my son did the
work... again. We installed the MC, pedal movement got us to bleed
port and adjusted like the instructions indicated. Of course, we did
the MC only and last year did the slave - it was recommended that we
do both at the same time, but...

Still good to take an emory cloth to the contacts. I like to mix and match the
parts to get the best possible switch. If it's not disconnected for some
reason, I'm betting the left rear window switch in the center console is the
culprit. Those center switches are always gross when cars come to me.

There aren't that many controller and memory chip makers out there, and firmware
differences are usually pretty minor. I think the important part is whether the
firmware is user serviceable, and whether the manufacturer stays on top of
finding flaws and rewriting the firmware to correct them.

OCZ got a bad rep a year or two ago when their firmware was giving more speed
and less reliability than other makers using the same Sandforce controller, and
that particular Sandforce controller chip had its own problems. I suspect Intel
and Samsung SSDs are still near the top of the heap for reliability.

I think SSDs are still a component where YGWYPF. If you cheap out you get slow
performance and lower reliability. The OWC drive had a good review here:

... though I don't know how much a review like that can evaluate longevity.

Reading the reviews (NewEgg) of SSDs I see a fairly high failure rate. I
use a solid state cache with speedboost to get fast reads/writes on my
ThinkPad, but I still have a conventional HD for storage. A newer, larger
HD would probably give you improved speed on your PB.

Thinking of replacing the hard drive in my 12" PowerBook with an SSD.
Should give me better performance and hopefully longer battery life.

Is this feasible? Anyone know if SSDs are made with a compatible interface?
Most I've seen are SATA.

I used to be a fan of MacAlly, but after a couple of their external drive
housings I bought had their interfaces fail, I have gone elsewhere.

Even though they were out of warranty, I went to them to make them aware that I
had several related failures.

They didn't seem the slightest bit interested in my experiences with their
products.

There are cheaper versions from other manufacturer's which do the same thing, I

You will definitely benefit from longer battery life, however, you have a
bottleneck with the PATA/EIDE bus in your hardware that will negate some (not

I wouldn't dd unless the drives were the same specifications. You could use
Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to make the copy to an external FireWire
drive. You can then boot off the FireWire drive to make sure the copy
worked. Once you know its good, swap the drives.

Yeah it's pretty old, a G4 processor.

Still does what I need it to do though. Thought an SSD might give it a bit of
new life.

Has an 80GB (upgraded from original 40GB by the PO) hard drive in it. What I'm
not sure about is how I'd go about transferring the contents of the current
hard drive to the new one. I don't have install media for the OS or most of
the applications. If I could get both drives connected I could use dd(1) to
clone the hard drive to the SSD

What are your storage needs and what is the transfer speed of the ATA/PATA
interface in the PB. Max is 133MB/s which is faster than most mechanical
laptop drives. Upgrading your existing hard drive to another mechanical one
may be the most cost effective. Depends on what you're using the laptop
for.

If the car was driven around town towards the end, the turbo
might have a

lot of lag that can be fixed with an Italian tune-up.

An engine which is not providing full power is easily mis-diagnosed as
a transmission problem, because the shifting is wrong.

Yep. The Albatross had a 'bad tranny'. Turned out somebody'd
really messed up the throttle linkage, and the full-load stop
screw on the injection pump.
