Surely there are still low-end video cards with VGA outputs? If not,
DVI-to-VGA adapters are readily available.

Re: [MBZ] Holy Hard Drives, Batman!

2011-11-20 Thread Dieselhead
You noticed that too huh? I did the exercise about a week ago.
Everything seemed to be double the prices in March or so.However
by carefully searching the macsales .com OWC site, I did find 1 or 2
decent prices for 2.5" drives mixed among the high ones.

My drive upgrade project will wait.

Does anyone know if seagate still is installing a 10 year automatic
detonate? In 2000, I built 2 identical boxes and used seagate
drives, pretty big for the day (maybe 40 gig?) and 2 years ago, both
went titsup within days, with none of the usual dying hard drive
symptoms. Fine one day, dead the next. almost exactly 10 years from
purchase.

I really liked seagates until then. I still have some older 20Gb
seagates that are still working, well after 10 years. I figured that
Seagate installed a 10 year self destruct "feature."

BTW, one of those 2 machines is the one I got POd about Server 2003
having to phone home on a few days ago. Different drive, obviously.
I had swapped out the original seagate after a few years. The other
machine still had the Seagate in it when the drive croaked. That was
my main daily use machine until then. I'd still be using that
machine if I had not gone to Macs.

Maybe in January I can buy a 1Tb drive cheap on fleabay or
crazedlist. I bought a SATA card last spring to do a drive upgrade
to one of my IDE vintage machines last spring, but never got around
to buying a drive and putting them in.

I tried buying an old dell (SX?)270 with a SATA in it, but dell was
nice enough to disable the video to 640x480 16 color if you had the
audacity to install server on a "workstation." So that is another
dead end. Yeah, I could buy a new video card, but then I have to buy
a flat screen monitor. I had a whole truckload of Trinitron 17" to
19" CRT monitors. So it makes no sense other than space saving to
buy flat monitors. I need the money saved to fix up old MBs and to
help keep Q in business. (and to keep buying new macbooks for family
members.)

So as long as my pile of 586 type stuff keeps functioning or until I
find better junk for free or dirt cheap, I will keep using it for any
non-mac needs

Some year I will buy a newer mac desktop when the used core2 stuff
gets really cheap. Last time I looked the surplus sales were still
selling G4s for the low end prices.

Got a Core2Duo CPU to replace the CoreDuo in my 20" iMac on the way
this week, so I figured I would look at swapping out the original
250GB hard drive while I have the thing apart. (Didn't know the
processors were socketed on these, did you?)

Just got done looking at CompUSA's site for a cheap hard drive and
nearly had a coronary!

I can recall seeing 1GB SATA hard drives earlier this year for under
$50. Now you can barely find them for $100!

Ouch!

Guess I'll see what I have in the Xserve box 'o' parts I keep for
server spares. I think I put two 500GB drives in my primary server
for around $40/each this summer.

I'm inclined to agree. If they can sell a car for an exta $2,000 --
$3,000 or more by calling it "Certified" they will. Unless it has
glaringly obvious problems, it's probably worth it to just pencil-whip a
cosmetically good car through the inspection. They are risking that
something goes wrong before the new owner sells it, wrecks it, AND
that all their fine print exclusions won't give them an out on honoring
the repair.

Re: [MBZ] Certified?

2011-11-20 Thread Dieselhead
"Certified" means nothing unless it is preceded by or followed by
something that is a recognized certification. That is ALL the ad
in question says. It is achieved by being able to manipulate a pull
down on the fleabay listing page.

"certified Pre-owned " with no other words means the seller is
certifying that the car was owned by someone else.

"Mercedes Benz Certified Pre-owned" is supposed to mean that the
dealer has checked out the car in many areas and either found them to
be serviceable or replaced them. Whether or not that was actually
done, and done properly is anybody's guess.

All the major car companies have their own standard.

We can create a ""Okiebenz Certified Pre-owned" certification and
define what it means. I would guess it would mean that we are
certifying that the car had a previous owner (PO).

In the case of a brand CPO, I am guessing that many dealers and most
of the grease monkeys are not interested in being sure the inspection
was done completely and thoroughly. They save money and add profit
by taking shortcuts. If an inspected item fails in the warranted
period, they have to fix it. Thus they postpone the expense.

CPO or not, buyer beware.

"Certified" can have so many meanings.. ie. "certified insane" or
"certified worthless"...
Even when taken in context, the scope is so broad as to be nearly useless,
IMHO.

However, "Certified, with documents" would have some credit.

Yup.

But how emacs (gnus or uhm, some other one I tried) handles
IMAP is not so good. I have an extensive POP3 > IMAP that is
then server here on my LAN. So I use Sylpheed which allows a
one-button export to emacs for editing. That way I get the
power of emacs for the text editing part and the mail
managment of Sylpheed. 'Good unix-style system where each
does what it's good at and makes it easy to link in with other
tools.

The more I use a real editor the harder it is to use anything
else.

CPO is certainly a dealer thing. And when I traded my accursed 2001 C320
in, the limit for CPO was seven years or 70K miles. The inspection process for
this is extensive to avoid later warranty claims.

In this case, to qualify as "Certified Pre-owned," whoever does the
listing has to be able to open the ebay pull down menu and click on
"Certified Pre-owned" Shazam, you have a "Certified Pre-owned car.

Tough criteria, but somebody figured out how to meet the criteria.

On my iPhone, if I hold my thumb over a character for a few seconds, a text box

It's really sad that there is an email client that doesn't make
it easy to edit. Seems to be that's a big part of what email is
about! I often launch emacs (well, just a frame, it's already
running) just to write a reply because it is just a good editor.

Does K9 show text different when the line begins with ">"
characters? All of the clients I use the greater-than character
to display the different levels of replies. That is one
shortcoming of the copy/paste method you just did.

Hmm, did you "copy" before clicking reply? If you do it after,
maybe it will have the ">" characters applied already.

Or maybe K9 doesn't even make that easy to do...

Re: [MBZ] S-Class recomended to replace towncar

2011-11-20 Thread Peter Frederick

The Benz will be cheaper to own, probably cheaper to operate, too.

This has been true for at least 40 years -- If I could do things over
again I'd have bought a used 240D instead of the Audi Fox I bought in
1980, I'd probably still be driving it. At least a couple of them
are still in operation in the local area, I see them at the grocery
every day!

The longevity of the Benz is greater (although new models are likely
not as good as the 80's ones) -- a good one will live almost forever
in "dignified" use, barring accidents, and the initial purchase
prices amortizes out over time.

Not that the Town car was a bad car by any means -- a friend of ours
buys them used and keeps them until they start having problems, his
last one got 27 mpg on the highway and was a VERY comfortable car to
ride in. Not sure what driving it was like, it seemed rather "boaty"
to me (long front overhang), but for regular use that's not a problem.

Car-part.com is your friend. If they don't list what you need, put
in a part like door, and start calling the ones that list a door with
a reasonable price until you find one that will sell the regulator.

You guys were right, there is a key-sized, oblong chunk of regulator broken
out around the dual gear.

New regulator is $422. How likely is JB weld to last? Something else?
Even the junkyard cars are newer than this. I'd love to be able to lower
the window but $400 is just not going to happen.

Thanks,
Tim

You need to remove the whole assembly (the "regulator") and then deal with
it. There are 3 or 4 nuts, then you have to wrestle it around to get it
out, the slides detached from the window, etc. I can do it in about 5 min
now but it will take you longer if you have not done it before. You can
easily remove the motor once the whole deal is out, it is a PITA to do it
 in the door.

Don't forget to lift up in the door panel to get the tabs out of the
slots, and to have some little wedges of some sort to jam in between the
glass and the rubber sweep at the bottom to hold it up while you get the
 regulator out.

If the regulator is indeed warped (which it probably is -- those motors
have a lot of torque and can actually bend them) I had luck with one by
laying it across a 2x4 or two and carefully stepping/stomping on it to bend
it back into shape. It might also be that the big driven arm gear rivet(s)
ahve sheared off, this too can be fixed with a small bolt and nut (ground
 down to clear the gear).

If it is too far gone you will need to replace the regulator. Also take
the time to lube your slides, motor, etc. and check the plastic slides.

The regulators are made of pot-metal, which is notorious
 for bending and/or breaking. Nigh-unrepairable, too. I
suspect you'll end up needing another one. Good luck!

I use it frequently when i need a used part rather than something
from Rusty. I look at the low price ones and then call some of them.
No use talking to the high price end. They "know" because it is MB,
it is worth the weight in gold And I don't waste my time on the
clods that don't list a price.

Anyone ever use this? Seems to be just a central listing site for
