Probably trying to avoid missing out on tax revenue. This sounds much like the
WI and FL laws that require you to pay sales tax on cars purchased out of state
if you establish residency within six months of the purchase.

I can mount an old computer heat sink to the top of the case.

Now if I can find a couple of panel voltmeters and a DC ammeter, I

Get a pre-packaged bridge rectifier. They usually are square, have four
terminals, and have a metal pad with a hole through it for bolting to a
heat sink.

You should get a bridge with at least a 400 V rating (the capacitor will
store 120*sqrt(2) DC and the reversed diode will see the line go opposite
polarity, for a total of 2*120*sqrt(2) ).

Buy, don't build. If you'd like I can search for a source of the right
kind of thing tomorrow.

It will have to be a fairly big heatsink (or else have a fan for forced
air cooling). You want something that has a thermal resistance of
1 deg.C./Watt or less.

Re: [MBZ] Who wanted a TD?

2012-04-09 Thread Randy Bennell

On 06/04/2012 8:37 AM, andrew strasfogel wrote:

Randy - How many miles can you document on your 76 300D?

Unfortunately not all that many.

I have the original manual etc and it indicates the car was sold here
new by the local dealer.
There are some entries to indicate that it was serviced at the dealer
when it was new.
If my memory serves to be correct it looks like it was driven year round
when it was new.

Then the history becomes somewhat anecdotal.

The fellow that I bought it from told me that he got if from a fellow
who was a barber.

The barber had it quite a long while.
He apparently got it from the origiinal owner who was a local Doctor.
The Doctor apparently kept it a long while but stopped driving it in winter.
The barbar lived in a highrise apartment building and had access to
underground parking that he was not using.

He began to store the car there in the winters for the Doctor.
He ultimately go tthe car from the Doctor and later sold it to the
fellow that I got it from.
I got it in July 2005. The fellow I got it from had not had it too many
years. He had it painted but did not do much else to it.

When I got it, it showed 990 miles.
Your guess is as good as mine as to whether that is the 2nd time around
or 3rd or ???
I don't think the car looks like it has huge miles on it so maybe it is
only 100,990.0 but who really knows?

I have managed to put about 12,000 miles on it in the past few summers.
I did about 3,000 miles per summer for the first 2 or 3 years that I had it.
I hardly drove it last summer as it has a few issues that need to be
sorted out and I did not get to them.

I hope to do better this year.
It needs, at the least to solve the vacuum issue as It will not shut off
unless I open the hood and push the stop lever. That gets old in a hurry.
The driver's seat back is falling apart. I fixed the base with the
online suggestions but the back is more of an issue. The horse hair pad
is worn out and expensive. I intend to talk to some local upholstery
shops to see if they think they can duplicate it with some stiff foam. I
know I can get the horsehair and maybe I should but I understand the
horsehair is not available for the rear seat and it will need it too
sooner or later so I wonder if I should try to move to foam.

Apart from that, there are some things I should do like adjust the
valves and change the coolant and the trans fluid but those would be
easy compared to the silly seat issue.

Then, there is the AC. The compressor appears to have a valve issue as
there is refrigerant but it will not compress it. The pressures are
equal if I recall what happened the last time we worked on it.

Of course, there are always other issues lurking. Like the battery which
I suspect needs to be replaced and the tires being of unknown age.

I hope to drive it to the cottage on the May long weekend here - May
19-21 here in Canada. That is a 325 mile round trip so I need to get
busy and do some of the list before then.

So what are they trying to do here? "Encourage" MA residents to buy
vehicles within MA?

Re: [MBZ] Very Aggravating BS

2012-04-09 Thread Russ Williams

Not quite true.
Sales tax is paid to the State thru the Local Sheriff Dept who is the
tax collector

for the state and Parish.
If you buy a vech. in Miss or Ark and paid taxes there you only pay the
difference

in taxes if your local taxes is more.
If you buy a vech in Texas and tell them you are going to Reg it in
another state

They will let you skip paying the sales tax. I've done this twice.
You can go to the DMV and get a La Temp tag if you are going to buy a
car out of state.
Only need the VIN and Sellers Name and Proof of Ins card. But there is a
caveat to doing that.
It's good for 30 days only. Normally Temp tags from a dealer is good for
90 days.
When you move to La you have 30 days to Reg your vechs and obtain an La
Drivers License.
You pay taxes according the Blue Book value. Reg fee is 75 bucks tag fee
vary depending on

how old the vech is. The fee for my 84 300D is 20 bucks for 2 years.

OK this seems like too much to believe so I did 2 minutes of research
(so I may be wrong, but what I found at least sounds believable):

"Massachusetts does not recognize out of state temporary plates
issued to a Massachusetts resident as legal.

"Massachusetts does not issue temporary plates for its own residents
but it does recognize legally issued temporary plates on out of
state vehicles.

So if I am a MA resident the state will not recognize another state's
temporary plate on a car I bought. However if I as an Indiana resident
I buy a car here and have a proper temporary registration then I can
drive it in/through MA legally.

[MBZ] What it's like to live in various parts of the country

2012-04-09 Thread Craig
A few years ago, we had a discussion of what it was like to live in
various parts of the United States, with listers chiming in with what they
liked about various areas.

With my application to John Brown University having fallen through and
having no response from my other college applications, I've begun to
consider what other parts of the country might be like. I have found a
job posting in Hanover, New Hampshire (not Dartmouth College). What's New
Hampshire like? I know Don Wills thinks Iowa is great, but don't recall
what others said about other areas of the country.

Can we have that conversation again, please?

Thanks,

However, during his working life they seemed to move from NH to VT and

Live Free and Die. Within sight of the southern border the population
is mostly Massholes who moved there to get away from the Mass taxes, but
brought all their "good" ideas with them, and are in the process of
trying to impose them on the rest of the state. That is not being
well-received from what I understand. The rest of the state is pretty
rural, and somewhat/mostly undeveloped. My wife did a rotation at the
Manchester VA hospital ("The Manch") some years ago, and observed then
that the tattoo/tooth ratio was pretty high -- sorta northern Appalachia
with similar social behavior. Further north the mountains have some
decent eastern skiing and are very pretty in the summer too for hiking
and such. There is no state sales tax (made up with property taxes I
think) and liquor is a lot cheaper at the state packies than across the
Mass border (and they are open on Sundays). The winters can be long and
miserable.

If you have a good job I think the cost of living is relatively low (cut
your wood for the winter heating season), and rural lifestyle abounds.

'Zackly my thought too.
Unless this was some sort of budget model but am thinking that clear
coat would be a standard procedure on all cars, regardless of colour.
Perhaps it's a racist thing?
Also I would be interested in how exactly the valves in a M103 (and most
other engines from 85 on) would be adjusted, seeing that they are
hydraulic self adjusting. You do have to set the clearance with shims or
some such thing, after redoing the rockers.
If that engine was rebuilt I am guessing that the clearances where not
set properly, hence the belief that a valve adjustment is needed.
My 103 has been ticking on start up for ever but seems to have not got
worse or better, well it's generally better with fresh oil and I reckon
the ticking is there to remind me to service it.
Anyway back to the manny 300E, pretty sure that the reason the engine
was overhauled was cause of the headgasket but it would be a gamble if
you don't know who rebuilt the engine and what parts where used but it
is a cheapish car and if rust free should be worth a punt.

I believe MB started using clear coat with the W126 chassis,

as well. I cannot imagine they would run one color with clearcoat

Re: [MBZ] Rear sub frame mount in 107 SL

2012-04-09 Thread clay monroe
Based on number made, there is no probable value in them. They do not have the
cachet of a convertible, are more GT than babe mobile, and as you state, just
not that in demand, so are being allowed to rust away. I would think that if
it were a really rare model, such as the 5 liter 1979 450slc, it might fetch a
good fee in twenty years. Or AMG.

Even the 107 drop top is over represented with the 280/380/420/500/560 and 18
years of production. I would expect a gray market euro to be more valuable
than DOT models. For some reason there is a flood of 380sl on the local
market. Did they really import that many more proportionally than the 450 or
560?

I also am expecting that prices will be very attuned to geography. If you are
in Georgia, the car must be made of platinum and valued at market rate for the
metal. For some reason Georgia cars on fleabay are stupid prices.

If the engine is any good, I would swoop down and source that for the SL. As
it is, the rust removal process is almost through, and we move into upholstery
for the week. When all Rusty parts arrive, I will move into "that which lives
under the air filter housing". When I get a lid hoist, I can remove the top
and see what sort of disaster the soft top is in and what needs attention in
that area.

Maybe. IF it leaks, there is bound to be rust. I am find that the bay area
SL, even if it lived in Seattle for a number or years, has horrible rust issue.
Maybe having the pads glued down discouraged owners from looking under them
and this allowed water to pool and feed tin worm. I would expect the same lack

I really like West Virginia, or at least the part I am familiar
with, the northern panhandle where the SW corner of Pennsylvania fits.

My wife and I escaped our government jobs and the Washington DC
area in 1981. We found that six hours from DC the price of rural
land dropped dramatically. So we bought an old farm here outside
Cameron WV. I am technically a hay farmer but mainly we have been
just taking it easy.

The people here are friendly. Wheeling,WV has a high rating
for small city quality of life according to the experts on such
things. No more steel plants. An hour from me the other way is the
WV university at Morgantown. Pittsburgh is 2 hours. The mines are
under ground.

Hardwood forest except for the wider ridge tops and valleys,
where part time farmers do beef cattle cow /calf operations. Far
enough North that we don't get chiggers, far enough South that we
don't get black flies. Forty two inches average. Mild
winters. Property taxes laughably low. Hunting for deer and turkey
unequalled. I call on Tom Savage and Lt Don(!) to testify to all this.

The big news locally is the Marcellus shale gas boom which is

Well, if you rub on it with cleaner, wax, etc., and immediately get the
paint color on the polishing cloth, that's not clear coat, is it? I even
called MB HQ when I needed to paint hood, left front fender and door after
deer collision in '96 and asked, "Does my 126 have clear coat?" Reply was,
"No, black enamel (040) only, no clear coat."

I don't care about the road issue so much, that was my wife who was held
up. It's the hypocrisy that I find so distasteful.

My friend lost his son 2 yr ago in South Africa in a freak accident
while they were there for the World Cup. Biden was there finding some
facts or something, and called up my friend to see if there was
anything, anything at all, he could do to help them. He was genuinely a
nice guy to them, and I think called them a second time to see how they
were doing. Kinda ironic in that the son who died was a rabid
up-and-coming Republican (and had started a R club at school) -- he
would have had quite a laugh to know that Joe Biden was offering to help
the family. What a world we live in.

Pretty much my thought.

Drivable automatic 300Es go for $1000-1500 all day long around here
but a manual one is a rare bird indeed. Hendrik, you may not know
that in the USA we only got stick 124s in 1986, and then only sedans,
and only a few thousand of them.

We didn't get stick 2.6s in later years?

Mitch.

I just checked the EPA mileage books, they show 300E manual and auto in 1986,
260E and 300E, both auto only, in 1987, and they have both engines with both
transmissions in 1988. From 1989 onward, I just see the automatics.

Did MBNA certify the 260E and 300E with 5sp in 1988 and then not sell any?

Mitch.

Must be. Too bad, a stripper stick 260E would be pretty sprightly.
