Re: [MBZ] OT use number 93 for a dead cat

2012-06-06 Thread Dan Penoff
You have to give them something to scratch, and encourage the behavior.

We bred cats for a number of years (Chartreux) and would never consider
declawing. We also never had a cat that clawed somewhere they should not.

Gotta start them young, give them a post or a piece of carpet on a board, and
encourage them to use it, and praise when they do.

When they don't, you apply a squirt of water from a squirt bottle and give them
a negative sound, such as a clap or hiss. That's unless they are clawing the
dog, which I considered acceptable.

Just like training for any other behavior, it takes some time and effort but
ultimately works.

Since the last flush, I'm not getting any heavy deposits. Instead I'm
getting lots of fine powered rust. I pulled the heater core hoses and the
bright orange rust that was built up on the heater core and inside the
hoses is completely gone! :-)

Looks like another flush similar to the last one should result in much
cleaner coolant.

On Sat, Jun 2, 2012 at 7:22 PM, Dan Penoff lwb...@yahoo.com wrote:

  Ernest,
I have thought the same thing. After I replaced the thermostat/flushed
 the
system I poured water in the upper radiator hose (connected to the
radiator) until water came out the thermostat housing. What I'm not
 clear
on is how does a heater core get rusty? Are they made of steel or iron
 and
not copper? Or does the rust from elsewhere just collect in the heater
  core?

I am somewhat concerned if the heater core is rusty and I try to clean
 it,
that it may spring a leak!

My current plan is to leave the system as is for now and see how dirty
 the
coolant gets over the next 2-3 months. I suspect the hoses may
 continue to
shed rust/discolor the coolant. What I don't want to do is spend money
 on
something that will not solve the problem. If I'm going to get rust
 even
with new hoses, I don't see any reason to replace hoses that are
 otherwise
  good.

replacing the heater core in an XJ isn't fun.

i'd suggest rinsing the heater core thoroughly, but hooking up the
garden hose to the inlets on the heater core and letting is run 'til
 it's
clear, then hooking the hose up to the other side. repeat until fully
 clear.
then read up on how to get the system completely full ('burped') by
filling at the radiator hose, and see if you still have the same
 problem.

What has the most crap buildup are the heater hoses. The supply and

[MBZ] OT - Rear Suspension Woes me5u1a2u

2012-06-06 Thread Dan Penoff
Just got back from the Ford stealership. Seems that my weird tire wear =
and related noise in the left rear of my 2004 Focus wagon is due to a =
bent suspension knuckle.

According to the tech, the suspension knuckle, which I would call a =
trailing arm, must have sustained some sort of road trauma, since I =
wasn't hit or hit something with the rear wheel that I know of.

The lower control arm is definitely out of spec, the upper is =
questionable, so they're going to replace both of them. Considering the =
age and mileage, the rubber is pretty old anyway, so it's cheap =
insurance to do it while they have it apart.

I looked at parts prices to DIY it, and it would have cost me about half =
of what I am being charged for the complete repair for the parts, not to =
mention I would have to mess with springs and nasty things like that. =
Not worth the hassle and potential for being off the road for several =
days, which would be a significant inconvenience.

I whined about having to sit there all day and how I was a loyal =
customer, so they gave me a loaner until the car is ready tomorrow.

With the four wheel alignment out the door it's going to be a few buck =
short of $1000.

Ouch.

Considering this is the only major repair I have ever had on the car, I =
can't complain too much. It still sucks.

Using synthetic would probably loosen up stuff in the differential. If you
use synthetic, I would think in terms of changing again much sooner than if
you just used conventional.

How does it work in the rain?  My DSL gets wonky every time it rains, like

OTA must be affected by rain too?

We have Dish Network for TV service, which as I understand it has a
lot in common technically with satellite Internet service. The Dish
receiver gets unhappy whenever there is heavy rain, snow, clay
pigeons, flying saucers, or basically anything fairly solid in the air
between the dish and the satellite.
