2012-06-24 Thread Max Dillon
I love the color and the headlights.

Looks like rear is too high, someone has mucked it up. If they increased rear
height by adjusting the SLS, the $$$ control valve will soon die. Best case
would be if they installed new springs and really thick spring pads. Worst
case they removed the SLS completely.

Yeah, despite this being an interesting car, I am always skeptical about
anything that would take a relatively simple effort to make it far more
presentable than it is, even more so when the seller points this out.

Are people this inherently lazy?

[MBZ] Nice looking TD local to me... $4k

2012-06-24 Thread rogerhga
If you look close, the front and rear paint don't match. Appears there has been
some rework for some reason. Also, very little view of the interior which could
mean trouble. No view of the engine or undercarriage. Part of it shines a lot,
but not enough for the $4k price tag. Just because it's NOW in Atlanta doesn't
mean it's always been. I used to know a small car lot that trucked in loads of
cars from New Jersey, put them on his lot, and people thought they were
"southern cars". As always, look close and buy at your own risk.

Control valve is pricey to replace, but can be rebuilt (our Philip has
done it). But I have to say that the ride height issue, plus the
painted wheels and the "some interior issues," makes me wary of this
one.

I feel a little sorry for you guys who have so few old Benzes around
that you feel the need to post every time one shows up on CL. If I
did that I'd be posting every day--there are always half a dozen
diesel 123s, 116s, and 126s for sale in Portland. On the other hand
few of them are any good from my experience. Last summer and fall I
was looking at a lot of them, mostly turbo 300Ds and 126 300SDs. And
they were all crap. One of the standard prescreening questions I ask
in first-contact emails or texts is "does the car have any electrical
problems?" When the answer is "A couple of windows don't work, but
nothing other than that," you tend to get your hopes up. Then when
the car turns out to have a big Radio Shack toggle switch on the dash
to turn on the heat because the owner has bypassed the ACC unit and/or
monovalve rather than fix them right, that tends to peg my personal
bozometer.

2012-06-24 Thread Dan Penoff
They come up here pretty regularly, but again, you spend a lot of time vetting
them, mainly due to the seller giving a lousy description or not totally
disclosing the "details".

There is a lot of junk out there, it just takes time to find the good ones.

[MBZ] 124 A/C oil replacement volume per component?

2012-06-24 Thread Alex Chamberlain
Does anyone have handy the section of the 124 FSM or TDB that gives
the amount of oil to be reintroduced to the A/C system when replacing
particular components? I am just about to button up the A/C on my '87
300D after replacing the manifold. I had to take the compressor off
to do so (ask if you want the gory detais) and figured as long as it
was off I would flush it. Poured some mineral spirits in the ports,
shook it around, turned the clutch by hand a few times while holding
it port-side down, and repeated the process until what came out was
clean. Since the system had a big leak and was open to atmosphere for
quite a while, I'm replacing the receiver/dryer as well.

Thanks,
Alex

Re: [MBZ] The E320's water pump is out.

2012-06-24 Thread Dieselhead
That is not a "square" oring. It is a "dead" oring. it may well be
the source of the leak. how do the shaft/seal look? If they look
like new, the oring may be your only problem. You have to weigh the
time/effort required to replace the WP later if/when needed against
the dollar cost of the new WP.

To complicate things, some replacement parts last longer than
original. Some last much less time than the original. It is
possible the old pump may last longer than a new one. It is also
possible that the old one may be ok when you put it back in, but crap
out in 3 days or 3 weeks. How lucky are you?

Well I'm not going to go that far. Right now we have a diesel
Mercedes, a gasoline Mercedes, and a gasoline Chevy van. It would be nice
to update the diesel Mercedes, but with things the way they are right
now, I don't see that happening. Besides, with one diesel and one
gasoline we are diversified in the type of fuel needed.

[MBZ] Hylomar and the E320 water pump

2012-06-24 Thread Craig
In putting a new E320 water pump on, I thought I ought to use something
to help seal the pump-to-block o-ring connection. In looking at past
emails, I saw that Hylomar HPF was highly recommended. I looked on the
web for it and found that it's no longer available as Hylomar HPF from
Permatex, and that Hylomar Advanced Formula is the equivalent. AutoZone
has all kinds of Permatex stuff, but since NAPA wasn't open yesterday, I
don't know what they carry; I'll look there tomorrow. If they don't have
it, I'll have to order it from the web.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Craig

[MBZ] Tiniest V-12 diesel engine

2012-06-24 Thread RELNGSON
Patience of a Saint and extremely skillful!!! (1220 hours)

OPERATIONAL V-12 DIESEL ENGINE THAT FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND.

This is not CNC technology; this guy made everything at home on his lathe
and drill press. Took 1220 hours (a year and a half?) to make the 261 pieces.
Note the end-loaded crankshaft into the block (like an Offy), 12 individual
cylinder heads, TINY rods and pistons, dual "underhead" cams with pushrods
to rockers in the heads. And, he did break-in using an electric drill
driving the crankshaft!

Even if you're not an engineer, you'll love this!
