Yes I wired the chain to the sprocket. It does require two people and some finagling to put the head back on to work around the sprocket. -Rolf What about the chain guide on the IP side? I found a cheapo set made of 1/2" hex stock at oreally? I am not thrilled, but I hope they do to get the bolts out. Nothing at HF, but I am sure I saw them at HF before. Maybe I just did not find them. I had a snappy socket. Big bucks. I thought it was in my tool box, but it is not. Wonder where it went? I may be looking for a snappy truck Its a triple square aka XZN bolt. Well put and very true. I once had a 3/4 ton Chevy truck with a worn out front end. I rebuilt it using Auto Zone warranted forever parts. A year later they made good on their warrantee. Front end work is simple, but heavy, dirty work. I am doing motor mounts again as a result of the combination of a OM617 with bad injectors and cheap motor mounts. Oops. It is unclear from the pictures. I have always broken the chain on iron head engines. But most of them were more serious work than just changing a head gasket. The only 616 I did was a complete rebuild with new sleeves, so obviously the chain was coming out anyway. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Using cheap parts is sometimes the only way to get by. I agree, don't rebuild the whole front end if all you can afford is cheap, just replace what you need to get by. Make sure the bolts in the swaybar aren't rusted so badly that they are going to snap off if you try to replace the upper control arms on a salt belt car. Re: [MBZ] W123 alignment
The problem is that if the rebuild was done with inferior parts, it likely needs to be done again. It would be interesting to know what was done, where the parts came from, and what brand they were. Or, the cost of the parts may be a good indicator. In my experience with many W123s, you can tighten up the front end quite nicely by replacing the upper control ams (pretty easy) and any steering linkage that has play (usually idler arm bushing). Higher milage cars (150k+), or those from extreme environments usually need more. Shot upper control arms will look something like this: http://images.jaimekop.com/2009_09_01_Front_End_Rebuild/large-2.html Note the gaps between the bushings and the arms, as well as the distorted appearance of the left bushing. If you post some pictures of various parts, it might give us an idea of whats going on. A complete rebuild is always the best way to go, but doing it with the parts that will last as long as the originals will cost you big. If you're going to use cheap parts, don't bother. The car in those photos was done 3 years ago and still drives perfect.
