I miss-spoke.. it's been a long day.. 36,000 acres.. give or take.. and
it's not square.. the survey party was likely drunk or dehydrated.. ha..

Survey points run from mountain top to mountain top and along stream beds
in some places.. so it's not like a city lot.. all nice and neat.. Some of
the border is defined by Bureau of Land Management. so who really knows
what wound their watch.. Last survey was in 1952 and all major points are
marked with 2 inch steel shafts.. I've located most of them...

It seems like a lot, but actually as ranches go in this area, it's a little
one..
Desert land.. not much water.. little graze. takes many acres to feed one
animal.. maybe.

The main product is peace and quiet from a irritating public.. Hope this
satisfies all who are curious.

Grant...

Better - or more accurate - than measuring continuity is to measure
voltage drop. After starting the engine (so the battery needs a
bit of charging) measure the voltage with one lead on the battery
"+" terminal and the other on the big wire at the alternator. If
there is more than 0.25 V drop, it's worth a closer look.

Good idea; didn't think of that. I'll try it tomorrow.

Yes, that would work.

Used to doing that. If so, just start over with new diodes, new regulator,

taiwan stuff is ok. the bicycles are actually really superb and have been
good for 20 years. back in the day, i had this GF and she wanted to ride
with me. i rode a bridgestone and really loved it. so i told her to get a
bridgestone. she naturally just went to the corner bike shop and bought
what they sold. it was a giant. i'd never heard of giant and was pretty
positive she was hosed, so i decided to show her in great detail why her
bike sucked and she should have gotten a bridgestone like i said. only the
giant was super nice. it rode super nice. i was shocked to see it was
from taiwan

taiwan mercedes parts are ok too. i sell a lot of karlyn control arms to
people who dont' want to pony up for the real deal and they work out
nicely, unlike the URO chinese garbage that is just worthless.

i might buy a little scooter someday. are there weight limits on them?
i'd get a 49cc so i don't have to mess with licensing or insurance and i'm
not planning on going very far or very fast.

Made in mainland China, or Taiwan?

The Taiwanese Kymco scooters are quite good for the price. Popular all
over the Third World and parts are no.problem. the ones from mainland
China are just as crummy as you can guess, probably more so. If they had
to meet any kind of safety standards, they be just as unsalable as chinese
cars are here. (A great irony that Volvo is now a Chinese brand.)

[MBZ] coffee

2013-09-03 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

I sold coffee WAY before it was cool

I've had a bunch of coffee houses and the most interesting time was
when we were in a 1920's gas station and had a coffee counter with
espresso machine and did printing in the garage bay with several
presses, plate burner, light tables and laser printer and process
camera and did color film processing AND sold new and used bikes and
did a lot or bike repairs.

That was from about 1985 to 1990. About 1990, the printing business
was starting to shrink, so i moved into a couple of revivals of film
movie cameras etc., etc.

The bikes sort of morphed into motor scooters when i started selling
Bajaj scooters.

As for the chinese bikes, they really sucked 10 or 11 years ago when i
started selling Geely. Then we sold lots of Vento 150 cc bikes which
were really good, now i sell Peace brand scooters. All of those are
chinese except for the bajaj which was a vespa company, originally (in
india). This is the real name of Peace ... Chongqing Astronautic
Bashan Motorcycle Manufacturing Co., Ltd.

We mostly sell 50cc Peace scooters for about $950 with inexpensive
helmet for your inexpensive head. I rode a new 50cc home for a college
student who wasn't yet comfortable with it, on friday, about 5 miles
over to the college on Friday it ran really nicely.

The chinese bikes HAVE to be setup and adjusted to run right, but if
you do that they are pretty good.

Hondas and yamahas and vespas and taiwan (TGB, Kymco, etc) are better
BUT they cost 3X the price and my customers are NOT shopping for $2500
to $3000 50 cc bikes. Most Vespa dealers are not doing all that well.

Parts? everything is on ebay and it's cheap. My importer/supplier in
Atlanta which is, i think, owned by peace, is LOADED with parts. They
usually have everything.

thanks,

As in 36 sections? As in 36 square miles? As in 23,040 acres?

Is your property a square, a rectangle, or some other shape?

Thinking about it, though, it cannot be a square. That would be six miles
on a side and would imply a driveway shorter than 14 miles (unless it
meanders A LOT!).

I would think it had cheap glass. I had an Iview tablet for about four days
before the glass broke from it falling on a padded, carpeted floor. Stick with

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Richard Hattaway
Yep, slipsies might introduce more questions than answers.  Just make the 240D
bare posts, and set up the jumpers.  If you get 13.7 when the 300 D is running,
then look at the battery in the 300D closer.

You really don't have to disconnect the 300D battery to make the test.

I think you are going to see 12.7 with both batteries.  But then you've
scratched off one of the tests you wanted to run pretty early in the game.

Did the new connector help any?? I've never changed one.  I was thinking it was
a molded plug on the end of some wires, but it's been 8 years since I've looked
at one.

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Richard Hattaway
If an alternator acted as a simple supply of E in said equation, then yes, this
is true.  One could also insert an R with a value of 0 and have the alternator
provide infinite charge.

However, an alternator actually depends on the battery for excitation of its
field windings, and a battery with a high resistance cell will normally cause
the alternator to not charge.

If the battery has high resistance, then it will be even easier for
the alternator to achieve 13.6 V.  If the resistance is _low_, then
it could have trouble supplying the necessary current.  Ohms law
and all that. *smiles*

2013-09-03 Thread Richard Hattaway
OK, it's not a good idea to remove a battery from a turning alternator.  So
this  is not a good plan.

I was thinking more along the idea of disconnecting the 240 battery from it's
car ( pull the cables off ) then jumping the 240 battery over to the 300.  The
240 battery is still in the car but not connected to the car.

If you have no issue starting the 300, it starts easlily with the questionable
battery, then I'm thinking it's not the battery that's at the root of your
charging issue.

I do have heavy cables but won't be using them to start the 300D.  I'll
start the 300D with its battery and then disconnect it and hook the 300D
cables to the jumpers and the other end of the jumpers to the disconnected
240D battery.  There will probably be a voltage drop but I should be able to
see if the alternator is charging.  Does that make sense?

Don't do this, you are likely to blow the diodes in the alternator by
running it without the battery connected!

If you want to see if it charges the other battery, install the battery
in the car.

If the battery boiled out, even one cell, either it was charging at far
too high a voltage, which you can easily check, or the battery was
defective.

Peter

..
What I thought about doing was putting the jumpers between the batteries
just like I was jumpstarting the car. Then I start the car with the
questionable battery/alternator. Leaving the negative jumper attached to
the negative cable on the questionable battery, I remove the negative cable
from that battery and wrap plastic around it to insulate it.
That way the alternator is attached only to the good battery in the other
car. If the meter sees 13.7v, the alternator should be good and the
questionable battery identified as being the problem. I have negative to
negative and positive to positive with the questionable battery out of the
picture. Wouldn't that work?

I may have to do that with our 240D/3.0. Its hood has suddenly sprouted
many "puckering cracks" where the paint curls up on both sides of a

In Desert Storm 1 the Iraq soldiers named that "Iron Rain" and it truly
instilled "shock and awe" to the highest degree.

Until you have been ground level anywhere near one of those deliveries, it
can't truly be appreciated.

No, likely not true. His emails are in the same format that Rusty used to
send out. He most likely got a customer list from Rusty. I got one from
him, too, just like I used to get from Rusty. No big deal. Unsubscribe is
easy.

Let's leave this mess of competing parts vendors completely alone.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Misbehaving email

2013-09-03 Thread Allan Streib
Proper mail clients will understand a message digest and allow you to
reply to individual messages within. I'm guessing Yahoo doesn't, since
you have to copy and paste the bit of the digest into a new email (which
explains why there is no In-Reply-To, because technically it's not a
reply, it's a new message.

Your way sounds like *more* work to me... copy/paste the content,
copy/paste the subject, copy paste the To: address vs. just "reply"

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Peter Frederick
Don't do this, you are likely to blow the diodes in the alternator by
running it without the battery connected!

If you want to see if it charges the other battery, install the
battery in the car.

If the battery boiled out, even one cell, either it was charging at
far too high a voltage, which you can easily check, or the battery was
defective.

Re: [MBZ] Alternator question '83 300D

2013-09-03 Thread Gerry Archer
I do have heavy cables but won't be using them to start the 300D. I'll
start the 300D with its battery and then disconnect it and hook the 300D
cables to the jumpers and the other end of the jumpers to the disconnected
240D battery. There will probably be a voltage drop but I should be able to
see if the alternator is charging. Does that make sense?

Gerry

From: "Michael Canfield"

If you are saying you are going to use your jumper cables in between the
240 battery and the 300 cables and starter yhen you better have a big set
of cables. Like welding cable. Otherwise you will burn them up and not
answer your question. Better to just swap out the batteries and see if
the

issue follows the battery from the 300.

From: "Richard Hattaway"
Like everybody else has said, please change the battery before you go to
all that trouble. You could even just use some jumper cables and clamp
another one in parallel to the toasted one to prove your point. Much
easier

than messing with regulators and drill presses (c:

Thanks to Rick, Richard, and Loren for your advice; and to Fred for the
connector which arrived in good order. Going to wire it up and try it
again. If the connector wasn't the problem, will put a good regulator in
and try it. If that doesn't work, will chuck the 3 used alternators in
the
drill press one at a time and try the half dozen regulators (hooked to
the

12 volt shop battery) until I find a good combination. If "that" doesn't
work, I'll assume that the battery, (which had boiled out most of its
water
in one cell), is at fault and get FLAPS to put in a new battery which
they

agree to do at my option.

Contrary to what you might think.. cutting the head off a rattlesnake does
not render it "safe".. I've had severed heads still strike after as long as
45 minutes... with the capacity to deliver a lethal dose of venom... so..
should you encounter one... kill it and leave it.. resist the impulse to
"pick it up" cause it's dead... They are also very territorial. If you
find one near your residence and have it removed.. it will find it's way
back within the next month.. When I first took the Ranch, I would capture
and remove any rattlesnake that came around the ranch house.. soon I
noticed what looked like the same snake [yes.. they all look alike, scary]
so I spray painted the ones captured.. sure enough.. they came back.. Since
then... I hang them on the fence and and bury the head, the coyotes or
vultures eat... nothing goes to waste.

Now.. how do we get Gary and the bicycle wrapped into the movie plot with
the mutant flying bat snakes and the sheilas with bad habits.. Help me out

miles [22 km] away from the house and still it wouldn't be someone
else's problem as it would still be on his land.

East vs west.

I recall driving from Calgary to Edmonton one time. I noticed a jet traversing
the sky from the eastern horizon. I timed its traversal of the sky to the
western horizon.

Took nearly 40 minutes.

Now that is wide open spaces!

I would consider that to be changing from one poor choice to
another poor choice. But I've said it all before, and I don't have
anything more compelling than what I've said before so I really
doubt I'll get Curt to change his mind. *smiles*

Heh! *grin* Thanks - but you missed and added Allen's post has
the same quantity of ">"s as my part. But I truly appreciate the
effort!

In summary, I have chosen to put extra effort into making my posts
as clear and concise as practical - both for now and for the
archive. Quotes, inline reply, delete extra content and footers,
etc. But that is _my_ choice. I'm well aware that others will make
other choices. I am also aware others may find my posts just as
annoying as I find top-posted, untrimmed replies...

Re: [MBZ] Am I retarded?

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
Sounds like a good excuse to do a roller paint job. If you're going to take it
off its very easy. 1 quart of Rustoleum, 3 or 4 foam (FOAM, not nap) rollers, a
quart of mineral spirits, something to mix in and you're on your way. The hood
on my '83 240D was GREAT from 20 feet and that was a white car. I've got a lot
more experience now and could do a better job in much less time.

Tip: The paint will flash dry fast, you can paint a new coat on every 10
minutes or less. The coats are very, very thin. Paint on maybe 5 coats, let it
dry overnight, lightly hit it with 600 grit in case you picked up any bugs or
whatnot. Do another 5 coats. Let it dry overnight, install on the car. In a
week or two cut and polish if high gloss is desired.

The boogers have already eaten what clear may have been on the hood.  If it
goes poorly, I have told the owner that I will cover a maaco respray of the

Re: [MBZ] W123 AC - Part 3 Begins

Thats it, I'm done searching forever...

I tried Amazon and all I could get was
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005RUTVIK/ref=biss_dp_t_asn in a pack of 10 for $18
plus shipping.

I wouldn't mind buying 10 if I KNEW it would fit but this is me measuring an
old dried out o-ring...

Here you go.

Thank you for the compliment. I think Mitch Haley

Re: [MBZ] buymbparts is dead drunk at walmart

2013-09-03 Thread Curt Raymond
I've never understood "relocating" wildlife. What most people are doing is
making their nuisance wildlife somebody else's problem.
I've been having an amusing discussion on Facebook with a friend who keeps
saying things like "we moved our raccoon to the country" to which I reply "We
made the raccoon somebody else's problem". I contend in those cases a pellet
gun is the best answer. The raccoon quickly learns that turning over my garbage
cans is a bad idea that makes his ass hurt and moves on to somebody else who
gives him a free ride to somebody else's house.

Gawd.. what a visual...

Sorry to burst your fantasy, but I do not keep rattlesnakes as pets.. They
present a clear and mortal danger to me at the Ranch. Should I be bitten,
due to the remote location, medical help and intervention is to far away.

Help me out
here Hendrik... I see a "Cowboys and Aliens" remake in the works... ;))

First thing I would do is pull the injectors then see if it will turn over, if
so then pull the head and fix it. If not you can swap the while engine/trans
over if you want but would be better off sticking with the 3.5 if possible.

Gawd.. what a visual...

Sorry to burst your fantasy, but I do not keep rattlesnakes as pets.. They
present a clear and mortal danger to me at the Ranch. Should I be bitten,
due to the remote location, medical help and intervention is to far away.

Contrary to what you might think.. cutting the head off a rattlesnake does
not render it "safe".. I've had severed heads still strike after as long
as

Help me out
here Hendrik... I see a "Cowboys and Aliens" remake in the works... ;))

Biggest problem with this jack and sourcing parts is that there are NO labels

years. All the paper labels and stickers have worn off.

He gave me a 12 ton bottle jack that I managed to resurrect with new oil and a
little shoe goo to put the plug back together. Funny somebody mentioned oil
that smelled like vomit the other day, thats exactly what I thought as I
drained the oil from that jack...

You can use Gmail labels and rules to exactly mimic folders. (Create a

If the battery has high resistance, then it will be even easier for

it could have trouble supplying the necessary current. Ohms law
