Nice to read that this guy eventually prevailed and got both the feds and
the Kalifornia authorities to sign off on his car. The gray market for
unusual European cars lives on, even if much reduced from its heyday in the
early '80s.

I believe you are looking a current Air Force inventory C 117...

The extra engines you are seeing at the aft tail is an optical illusion
enhanced by the low reflective paint.. you are seeing the outboard engine
on the wing of another airplane which is almost in the right position
to

appear to be mounted on aft tail area, setting behind it.

Hard to call it accurately due to the stealth paint job... no markings..
but those could have been edited out..

That's the way I'm seeing it... general profile fits in both the frontal
pic and the side view...

I suspect it's a T-tail of some sort (DC-9, VC-10, or whatever Illiushin

No one ever built anything like that, the T-tail configuration has been
around for quite a while, starting with the Caravel in the early 50's,
but

it's only really useful if you want a very high lift wing configuration
(Boeing 727, specifically) where you need huge leading edge slats and
amazingly large trailing flaps. Engines on the wing interfere with the
airflow.

For six (or ten) engines, just hang them on the wing is, I suspect,
easier. See the history of the B-36 for an example.

[MBZ] Vacuum pump oil

2013-09-25 Thread mlh
Those who have vac pumps for A/C service, what do you do for pump oil?
All my local options are in the $15-20 per quart range.
Advance Auto had a clearance sale on Robinaire oil for $6.99, but not in
the stores. I'd have to order a case of 12, which is way more than a
lifetime supply.

I found Mobil pump oil for $6.14 +$5 shipping on eBay. Ordered it
yesterday AM, got it from UPS today. Half a gallon for $17.28, it was as
if NAPA had a 'buy one get one' sale. Now it will be years before I have
to buy the stuff again.

[MBZ] 124 AC scare

2013-09-25 Thread WILTON
'Noticed 2 or 3 days ago my '87 300D not cooling cabin. 'Put 2 cans of R-12 in
it day before yesterday. Yesterday morning system nearly empty. Went to AC
tech 4 or 5 blocks from home 0800 this morning. Tech found expansion valve
(the one that came with evaporator 5 years ago) leaking. New valve arrived
coupla hours later (surprise). New expansion valve and R-12 installed; BLOWING
ICE COLD!

Meanwhile, AC tech broke plastic nipple off side of vac check valve in vac hose
from pump to brake booster, the check valve that's directly above the low AC
pressure Schrader valve. I suggested remove the hose, drill out the very short
remaining piece of nipple and insert new coupling; tech used small piece of
copper tubing for coupling/nipple and sealed it in place with epoxy.

[MBZ] AC Compressor not coming On

2013-09-25 Thread Larry T

Howdy -
1991 300D 2.5T. We keep the ACC on /Auto /assuggested and the AC
worked fine until this afternoon when she was coming home from work. The
AC worked great yesterday on her way home and this morning it was in the
40s and 50s so it wasn't really needed - then today it failed to cool.
When I checked the Compressor I found it was not coming on with the AC
switch. Checked and replaced #7 Fuse with no affect.

Does the Compressor have a High/low Pressure Shut-off? We had it topped
off in April and it has been blowing cold since.

I can see some electrical connections below the PS Pump on the top of
the Compressor but have no idea how/which ones to test. There are
either 3 or 4 wires attached to the Compressor - which one should be Hot?

Should I just throw up my hands and call the Indy or pray for cool
weather? I hope this isn't one of those thousand $$ problems!

[MBZ] Speedo errors

2013-09-25 Thread Frederick Moir
No, not the swimwear!
My 1987 wagon seems to have an inaccurate speedometer.
The diff. ratio is apparently 2.65:1, the same as my 190DT.
So, when doing 80 mph the tachometer on the 190 reads 3000 rpm. (2950 by the
book.)
When the 300TD is going the speed corresponding to 3000 rpm, the speedometer
indicates 96 mph.
The GPS reads the speed as 80 mph.
Question, is it likely that it is the speedometer is out of its tiny mind or am
I? And is there anything else that would cause this error?
Vacant staring idiot wants to know.

Thx Wilton Dan -
I guess it can work great one day and be low the next? I thought it
would be a gradual degradation Evidently not ;-)

had it topped off in April - andin the previous May - so I was hoping a
slow leak would allow a yearly refill. evidently not. ;-)

So the next question is where to find the leak and can I fix it
myself hopefully the parts inside the dash are not the problem. Had
a defective Schraeder valve a couple of years ago - was hoping that was
the only problem...

Current generation is 142hp I think. I can't really see the need for more. I
took a '12 Jetta for a test ride up through southern Vermont in some rolling
hills at about 50 mph it wanted me to put it in 6th gear. I figured there was
no way it would pull those hills at that speed in that gear but it sure did, no
problems at all.
My Jetta is in the shop for a timing belt and shifter bushings, I had a hard
time finding 5th gear yesterday, it'll be a fun car once I can get all the
gears reliably. Not bad for $1500...

A Golf GTD might be a fun way to spend $27k.
Still cheaper than my 167hp 190E was in 1986 dollars.

Question, is it likely that it is the speedometer is out of its tiny mind or
am I? And is there anything else that would cause this error?
Vacant staring idiot wants to know.

Well, I think it looks very impressive on the road (at least in black).
And certainly it isn't wanting for technological features. I imagine
though, it's quick start guide is bigger the most owners manuals!

I love the interior mood lighting with the black interior as shown in
the vid! Very cool looking! And with the hot stone massage seats cabin
scents, who needs a spa visit? Just hop in your new S! But don't get too
relaxed, you still have to drive it, LOL!

I find it rather disappointing in the styling department.

To my eye.. it looks and moves just like any other jap wanna be..
totally lacking of distinction...

To bad.. hate to see the Marque diminished to that point..

Actually you should change it regularly.  If you do a lot of service, it's
almost monthly.  There are guidelines which I don't remember, but I do remember
them surprising me at how often it should be changed.

Re: [MBZ] Benz pR0n

2013-09-25 Thread clay
I find it quite entertaining. So much automotive porn to slobber over. It
will be quite the ride for the guy who gets his company to lease it for him.
Then a guy with aspirations will empty his bank account to drive it for a
number of years while the expensive systems go into a cascade failure. He will
unload it to a Toyota dealer to purchase the new Camry with all the same bells,
but working, for a quarter of the price he paid. Off it goes to the auction
yard and onto a curb-stoner lot on low cost auto row, where a low end
asperational driver picks it up to look like a pimp. Since nobody will know
that most of the systems have gone into failure mode, it looks like he is a
full on gangsta' and he can put 23 wheels on it with day-glo spinners and have
a booming stereo set up resonances in the glass while it rattles the nuts off
the engine mounts. Since the new owner has no cash, he can ignore any upkeep
and ride it into the ground, destroying the engine and trans, as well as a
nything else, with the leather rotting away under his butt, and mold and
fungus sprouting in the carpets and trunk, while the tin worm consumes the body.

At this point, I will scavenge the last functional bits when I visit it at the
PnP. And onto CL they will go, so that some guy who loves the old cars can
keep his classic W222 in original condition. While his wife and kids think he
is a crazy old man for wanting a car you actually have to drive yourself.
