Progressive dislikes acceleration, in any direction.
They ding you for a 'hard brake' at 7mph/second.
If you stop for a yellow light, you WILL be penalized.
If you routinely run yellow/pink lights, don't corner hard, and drive a
diesel, you'll probably do OK.

Re: [MBZ] Vacuum pump oil

2013-09-26 Thread mlh
Actually you should change it regularly.  If you do a lot of service, it's
almost monthly.  There are guidelines which I don't remember, but I do
remember them surprising me at how often it should be changed.

I'm not sure either, but for somebody who uses it once or twice a year, or
might leave it on the shelf unused for 2 years straight, I think the safe
way is to change it after every use. I ran it for 1/2 hour last winter
when I bought it, but didn't have any oil on hand at the time.

Mitch.

Seen this 350SDL while browsing eBay. The color caught my eye, don't see
Teal Blue cars too often. But the vid they posted was a total turn off.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psxb9e-rCkQ

OK, we get it, it hauls! Everyone knows the benefits of an Italian
tuneup, but all the revving of the engine racing it around the parking
lot in a for sale vid didn't impress me or befit the car, especially
with the clicking/clacking lifters and/or belt tensioner it just
seemed overly loud in general. That 603 certainly wasn't purring. More
like $60K new 30mpg.keep dreaming!

Still it's a pretty car, just not for their original $8K asking price. I
wonder how much the dealer picked it up at auction for?

I have not tried it. Recent surveys have shown that it is not a popular option

[MBZ] OT: UK pilots' union says fatigue is biggest threat to air safety

2013-09-26 Thread Gerry Archer
Exhausted airline pilots are frequently falling asleep in the cockpit, with
one in six admitting to having slept at the same time as their co-pilot,
their union has warned.
The British Airline Pilots Association released the findings of its survey
after reports of an incident in August where a passenger plane belonging to
a UK airline was left on autopilot as the crew slept.
Neither pilot had slept more than five hours in the past two nights before
flying the Airbus A330, according to the official incident report logged by
the Civil Aviation Authority, which did not issue further details.snip

Are you referring to the anti-could care less shibboleth?

Can we put that one to bed? I'm not a big fan of Stephen Pinker's brand of

If you're nice to them, I assume they'll give you a free set at the dealer.
I think the samples have been floating around for a while now.

[MBZ] Are the same filters used?

2013-09-26 Thread clay
I am getting rid of the parts shelf items I no longer have a car for. I would
like to put up a few items I can actually use. With a w220 and a w140 to take
care of, I was wondering if the oil filters, being felt and all, were the same.

One of my country relatives has had that for years. He buys it at Walmart
and hangs it on the pickups rear view mirror next to the rubber dice.
Covers up the smell of stale beer really well.

I think he means fleece. RLE used to refer to the newer Benz filters as
fleece.
He correlated the use of fleece filters to the higher milage between oil
changes IIRC.

i always found that fleece terminology really strange. i'd think of the
old 617 filters that were comprised of cloth milling residue as more
fleece than the modern synthetic type material filters. they are just
like the paper filters only they use a synthetic filtration medium, like
polyester or something instead of the traditional paper medium as you'd
find in some old school wix or purolator filter

Re: [MBZ] Are the same filters used?

2013-09-26 Thread Peter Frederick
Actually, the specifcation is, I believe, string filters, like Wix
are. There is a full flow pleated paper element and a bypass filter
that is supposed to be tightly wound porous string to give great
filtering depth with small particle retention.

Needless to say, most filters are packed with gin trash instead of
being wound string, it's cheaper.

Gin trash, if you are not familiar with the term, is the crap from
ginning cotton to remove the seeds that is too short to spin into
yarn. Usually full of bits of cotton boll and bug parts.

I believe Mann and Hengst are wound string, so is WIX (at O'Reilly's),
so that's what I use. Gin trash is highly variable in filtering
capacity and particle size breakthrough.
