I took the compressor off the car and repeatedly filled it
with mineral spirits, operated the pulley manually, and turned it over
several times to make sure the solvent was distributed well.

That's what I did on my wife's 560SL when I un-R134a'd it.
But I used gasoline.

I don't know how you would, unless the hose arrangement in the particular
car you're working on was such that you could remove all attachments in
situ from the compressor and attach a flushing system in a fluid-tight
way. Certainly in a 124, for example, there's no way that's going to
work. When I replaced a leaky manifold in the '87 and refilled it two
summers ago, I took the compressor off the car and repeatedly filled it
with mineral spirits, operated the pulley manually, and turned it over
several times to make sure the solvent was distributed well. Then gave it
a final flush with acetone the same way.

[MBZ] Lubing Sunroof

2013-10-17 Thread Bob Rentfro
I believe I need to lubricate my sunroof. This is on my old 240 D. I have
the super secret sunroof goo that I bought from Rusty back in the day. When
it's warm outdoors, it opens and closes easily (it's electric by the way).
When it's cool out, it's hard to open and closeit has to be assisted
with the free hand. So I'm going to lube it. Where do I apply the goo or
any other lube?

Re: [MBZ] Keys.

2013-10-17 Thread Randy Bennell

Is it not pretty easy to get something notarized in the USA?
I assume they just want someone to certify that a copy of the
registration is a true copy.

If you go to the dealer they will ask to see the registration but if you
don't actually go there, then they may want you to send along something
that indicates you are the actual owner and not just someone who wants a
key so they can "borrow" a nice car they see parked on a lot somewhere.

I picked up keys from the dealer here and the parts man said to me -
"you aren't separated or divorced are you?"
The car is registered to my wife. He let me take the keys but probably
thought it was not much of a risk since my car is so old.
I can see where they might be a bit more careful with newer and more
valuable vehicles.

Notarization's always been very easy for me; it's merely a certification
that I'm who I say I am. In this case, does this face go with this
signature and this registration? It's always been true for me, so it's very
easy. Now, If I were not who I say I am, it'd be much more difficult, and,
of course, that's the reason for it. ;<)

Yeah, but MacBooks get HOT before the fans kick on, and I firmly
believe the stress on the solder is a leading cause of failures (this
is true of PC laptops and even cards using the same video chips).
Chip temps get up to 100C before you know it, and hotter yet in heavy
use.

The cure is the best thermal paste you can find and using a utility to
keep them from heating up so much, seems to keep them running much
longer. If you can stand actually hearing the fans run, which doesn't
bother me at all, they probably won't fail again. Leave the fans
idling along as the chip approaches solder melting temps, you are
asking for trouble.

Mineral spirits will not dissolve the R134a oils, so you won't remove
them. A 1:1 mix of isopropanol and dry hexane works much better.

The isopropanol must be 100% and dry, not the 70% solution sold as

i replaced compressor, dryer, expansion valve and condensor (with a

with mineral spirits using a flushing air powered gun

i filled it with straight mineral oil and installed R12

works great!!

[MBZ] Somebody needs this Jeep!

2013-10-17 Thread M. Mitchell Marmel

Here's the deal, kids:
This is a Jeep Cherokee. This is not a luxury SUV, or a
maintenance-free disposable import. It has solid front axles, wind
noise, and character.
It's a Jeep. It rides like a Jeep. It drives like a Jeep. All of
these are GOOD things.
It is not new, it is not pristine, it is used. This will be apparent
in the pictures.

If you do not own a toolbox, have never changed your own oil, and are
scared of firearms: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If you have been posting on facebook all about how excited you are
for pumpkin latte season: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If you get offended easy and often, whine to your co-workers, and
bitch a lot: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If you feel you are owed anything in the world & have a bullshit job
where you fail to produce: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If you own a bieber album, white oakleys, affliction t-shirts, or
those candy-assed stitched-pocket jeans: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.
If you consider the 2nd Amendment an anachronistic relic and have
never owned a firearm: THIS VEHICLE IS NOT FOR YOU.

If, however, you have BALLS OF STEEL and consider adverse weather an
excuse to do stupid shit: THIS IS YOUR JEEP.

Do you laugh at danger, and tempt fate?
Have you ever uttered the words, "Hold my beer and watch this ..."?
While bored at work do you pick targets at random and think, "I could
hit that from here with the .22 ..."?

Have any of your friends quit hanging out because you were too much fun?
Do you have the number of a friend with cash memorized for bail?
When you pass an abandoned flatbed farm truck along a fenceline do
you consider taking on another project?
Is your ol' lady really sick of the random piles of parts, greasy
footprints, and empty beer bottles in the garage?

-could you not care less?
Do you have Jalopnik saved on your laptop AND smartphone?
Do you own a service manual for every vehicle you ever owned?
Do you still miss your first ride?
Can you carry on a two hour conversation discussing tools, scars, and
hi-lift jacks?
Remember when tool companies had the balls to put half-naked beauty
queens on their calendars?
Do you consider the Prius an abominable affront to the Gods of
displacement, torque, and All Mighty Internal Combustion?

If you answered in the affirmative to the preceding: THIS IS YOUR JEEP.
