My first car was a 1975 Civic with gummy belt retractors and nonfunctional inertial locks. I took them apart, don't remember what I cleaned all the crap out of them with, but when I was done the drums and ratchets were clean and the inertial weights swung freely. Belts worked like new after that. Dunno. I seem to recall that's what someone used. Certainly not an endorsement on my part. I try to avoid the stuff at all costs. There are so many better products out there that are purpose made. PRIOR POST: When the car settles down, it idles around 600 -650 RPM. When it is flakey it goes from maybe 400 rpm, just barely running, to 1000 or 1200 rpm with some instances of 600. I pulled the OVP relay from the SDL, popped out the 124 OVP and put in the SDL OVP. Started up the 300D, no joy! Rats! I was hoping that might be a simple fix, if not cheap. Battery terminals are snug. I did not take them off, clean and replace. Working on the 107 brakes first. Is this Crank position sensor on the trans accessible on a 124/OM603 without taking out the trans? I don't remember ever seeing anything like that on a diesel. Why would that cause the lights inside the car to flash off and on? I could see idle speed and tach funkiness being caused there. Working on it. The idle control system has failed, and there are several causes. OVP crank position sensor (obviously, if it's bad or has intermittent connection, no tach, no idle speed control). Usual cause is a corroded connector behind the engine, as the sensor is on the transmission housing. The sensor at the front is only for setting injection timing. Failed rack actuator (won't cause no tach) Bad wiring Bad idle speed computor Cracked solder at the rack actuator Bad rack position sensor The FSM as a twenty page diagnostics procedure I've not started yet due to the crappy weather. That 1/16" might be a problem in some cars, like W201. It's a wrestling match for me to get a Group 49 Interstate Megatron in or out of a 190D. I had one of the Bosch batteries you describe in my 82 300SD. Worked great, fit perfectly, and lasted a long time. Yeah one of those, why bother type things. Far as I (well wikipedia) knows, VW already had vehicles in the luxury bracket, such as the Audi A8 and Bentley. I think the would have been better off to put money into the Bentley brand to build it up to be a competitor to BMW and MB. Or build Audi into a more fancy brand, trying to get a third horse in the race is a waste of resources. You're quite right that VW is seen as a value for money brand and trying to be everything for everybody can soon leave you as being nothing to nobody.
