Wow! Never realized there was that much to a trumpet / cornet. Always
though it was just 3 or 4 little buttons to make flats and sharps and
the musician puckered up for the rest. Good luck on the trunk.

Only the heap's trunk won't unlock. I had been rear-ended in
the snow a month earlier, and while the car was knocked back
together, and the trunk opened and closed just fine, I had
never locked it since the accident. Well, it _locked_ just
fine, but would not unlock.

So I'm about to be late for the dress rehearsal, and I only
have a C horn. Mind you, I only _have_ a C horn because
I basically can't transpose. The conductor of today's

school it was held at. He had a spare Bb cornet in the
band room. "I don't know when it was last played.
There's no mouthpiece. But you're welcome to borrow

Well, I figure it's a step up from 'nothing', and just
has to be better than me flailing around on C, so I grab
it and dash off to the next school. Which I find, only
there are no unlocked doors. After a trip around the
building, gathering up other lost souls, we eventually
found the one door with a stooge, who had wandered away
for awhile. In we all go, they're starting to play already.
So much for a little recovery time.

I hold my T mouthpiece into the cornet, a Conn Victor,
and it doesn't blow. At all. I look, and find that
the #1 and #2 slides are swapped. That's not a good
sign, I swap them back. I then check the valves, and
yes, somebody has swapped #1 & #2. I put them back.
#2 promptly binds, it's not working right. And the
horn is still blocked. I look down the bell, somebody
has thoughtfully rammed a marble down there! I can't
shake or blow it out, I think this horn is done for
the day!

Fortunately my stand-mate had brought her new old
Conn/Wurlitzer Bb/C cornet along for show and tell.
And a cornet mouthpiece. We had to find the stooge
again, and go out to the parking lot to get it. I
played that the rest of the rehearsal, trying to dial
in the (as-yet unknown) tuning, figure out which HP/LP
slides were what was needed, etc. It was fairly grim,
she was still in the middle of polishing it, and
figuring out how it went together. I don't think
she had really played it at all yet. I think I just
played it _way_ more than she had. Unfamiliar horn,
unfamiliar mouthpiece, didn't even have time to tune
it, except on the fly. Oh, and my solo's coming up
fast. Ugh.

Sigh. And my trumpet is still locked in the trunk.
I have other horns, but I could really use the music
for the concert, and I'm supposed to return it then.
I will drill into it in the morning, I guess. My
good horn, music, and good leather coat are still
trapped in there.

I went through our local pick & pull recently and came across a W140
S320 which had a Becker head unit someone had tried to remove - looked

equipment of any value was destroyed trying to remove it. The trunk
boxes were equally damaged. they might be helpful as spare parts...

Overall the system is not that complicated but diagnoses is easier with
the right tools and knowledge.
There are flow charts out there for the steps needed to diagnose the
KE-jet but they assume the availability of the correct tools.
By the sounds of it there is something major wrong, even if the system
goes into fail safe/limp home mode, it should still not bellow out
smoke, especially white smoke. As the system falls back to K-jet mode
and will be running a little rich.

White smoke is coolant being burned in the combustion chamber.

A head gasket R&R on a M103 is not difficult and should not be that
expensive.
The special tool required is a 12 point hex socket, which is not
expensive and you'll need a head gasket kit, which is also not expensive.
I oil has not got into the coolant, you won't need to flush the system
but grain the oil and remove the filter before doing the gasket, as the
filter gets in the way.
I prefer to drop off the manifolds from the head, as that makes pulling
the head off easier, some prefer to leave the manifolds on, works either
way.

If you're going to go aftermarket, Blaupunkt is definitely the way to go.
Since the supply of Becker aftermarket has pretty much dried up, there
aren't too many choices left.

I parked the car away in the garage for the winter since putting back the old
fuel distributor in January. Weather is nice in the northeast so I decided to
take the car out and give it another try. The car runs rough and there is
still excessive while smoke. I rtealize the issue is beyond my capabilities
and I need to find a good mechanic.

Anyone know a good mechanic who works on older Mercedes with Bosch mechanical
fuel injections? I live in Westchester County (Hawthorne New York 10532) just
outside of New York City.

Second questiondo you think it's safe to drive the car to a mechanic
considering the smoke issue? There is a liquid soming out of the exhaust too
which appears to be a combination of water and fuel.

Thanks,

Bob

Since changing the fuel distributor is really not difficult I decided to put
the
old one back on and see what happens. It started up pretty quick and ran rough
with excessive white smoke. I assume that's the excess fuel in the system
burning off. Have a party to attend so can't wait for it to burn
off...hopefully it's not too long.

I will resume the quest tomorrow.

Thanks to all!

Thanks Mitch.

I'm still battling mine, I suspect I need to bite the bullet and take
the fuel distributor off and clean everything up. Just put a new
regulator on the alternator today, battery went flat between Monday
(when it started at -4) and Friday night. Good thing it didn't poop
out on me in the cold.

Between the clear coat issue, the potential rocker panel rust and mileage,
they're asking a bit high, if you ask me.

Re: [MBZ] Becker Replacement

2014-03-09 Thread Dan Penoff
I hate aftermarket units in MBs, too, but after having one for a short time
when I got the car I was spoiled with the iPod and phone integration. I can
deal with the aesthetics, but I wouldn't go with anything that didn't sound as
good or better than the stock Becker.

I had my recently rebuilt Becker in the car with a GROM USB interface for the
iPod, but it just didn't give me the same sort of feature set that the newer
head units had. When I saw some guys talking about the Blaupunkt Toronto over
at the BW R129 forum and saw how inexpensive they were, I figured I would try
it out and see.

With the ability to use the stock cell phone mic in the car, I was pretty much
set as far as functionality.

As I mentioned previously, if the "knob" illumination was amber it would be
perfect. Otheriwise, It's so far beyond the stock Becker there is no
comparison.

And no, I'm not mad at Jaime. For that matter, Becker sells the Toronto as a
stock head unit replacement - for $350.

Ouch.

[MBZ] Mercedes watch

2014-03-09 Thread OK Don
*Two topics in one!*

Mercedes-Benz Pebble smartwatch

Wearable tech was one of the hottest trends at CES 2014, and Mercedes-Benz
was among the companies showing off gadgets for the body in the form
of a Pebble
smartwatchconcept.
The device can communicate with the Mercedes-Benz Digital
DriveStyle app to allow an owner to keep track of a vehicle's location and
fuel level, access navigation features such as Google local search and get
social network feeds from Facebook and Twitter when away from the car. And
while driving it could tap into vehicle-to-vehicle communication to warn a
driver about accidents, road construction or stalled vehicles -- all via
vibration.

[MBZ] Water Pump R&R 602-962 engine

2014-03-09 Thread Larry T

Howdy -
I need to replace my water pump as it's leaking and starting to
squeak. i read the WSM Procedure but ir seems they may be doing more
than is needed - if someone who has done this on a 91 300D 602-962
engine, I'd really like to hear from you.

The WSM called for removing the radiator, alternator and a few
other things i don't normally remove. Also, the WSM didn't say
anything about putting permatex, etc on the gasket - would you recommend it?

I know the serpentine belt tensioner needs to be released so the
water pump bolts can be accessed but am not aware of a reason to pull
the alternator. but if it needs to come off I'll take it off - same
with the radiator although I don't mind leaving it installed and
working over the radiator.

Please let me know what other "gotch ya's" are waiting for me

Amazing.

The Blaupunkt is literally plug and play. The connector matches up perfectly
with the stock harness, so you need nothing in the way of wiring to be done or
modified, from what I can see.

I pulled the Toronto out of the box, installed the faceplate and plugged it in.
WIthin seconds I was able to set it up and have FM. 10 minutes later I had it
paired with my iPhone 4 and my phone book downloaded to the unit.

The EQ is a little thin, which was about the only criticism I saw online, but I
was able to tinker with it for a minute or two and get it to nearly perfectly
match the Becker that I removed, so I'm happy. This was the determining factor
in whether or not I would keep the Toronto.

I'm keeping the Toronto.

The only complaint I have is the blue lighting. I wish the color on the knobs
could be changed to amber to better match the aesthetics of the interior, but
other than that I am very happy with it.

So it's back out to the garage to run the USB cable to the center console and
find a place to mount the accessory BT microphone.

I would add that I haven't tried the BT phone functions as far as calling, but
that wasn't a big feature for me, so I'll play with it later when I can set
something up with another caller. I bought it for the tunes and integration

No,I ended up using some high-end wireless electrical connector crimpers
I had in my tool box. it has a 1/4" wide half moon shape on one side
and a semi sharp opposing piece that actually makes the crimp. It was
a perfect fit for the bleed valve.

I attached a image of them if Kaleb will let it through... It was the
same principle that someone suggested using vise grips would
accomplish. As I squeezed the pliers the "teeth helped hold the
bleeder and break it loose.
