Re: [MBZ] 123 fog lights

2014-04-26 Thread Larry
When I bought my 78 240D it had the clear lights and I wanted yellow so
I bought as pair from the deal at around $40 each - they are Bosch and
came with bulbs -- definitely not sealed beam...

I have a few I can check - but as I have never messed with them I
presumed they were sealed beam. They mount and adjust like a
sealed beam...

So I just took my Yankee screwdriver out at pulled one apart. The
one I picked had broken glass, but after opening it up, it clearly
uses an H3 lamp. So the reflector and lens seem to be bonded
together, but the actual light source (lamp) is a replaceable H3
and thus is _not_ a sealed beam.

I'm too lazy to check the others.

I'll take a picture when I get home
tonight. My '78 240D has clear driving lights my '83 240D had
yellow. My wagon had clear but I converted to yellow because I
like the look of them. I was going to convert the '78 but
Dwight talked me out of it. His CD has one of the yellow ones
from my '83 240D.

I think the lenses and reflectors on both the clear and yellow are
for fog lights. At least all the ones I have here are. I have
thought about converting them to driving lights.

Thats what sealed beam means right? Where the bulb is sealed
into the lens, like the headlight...

Yes. Sealed beam means there is no glass envelope around just
the filament (like the H3 lamp has). The entire reflector and lens
are the envelope which has oxygen removed so the filament won't
burn.

Gerry wrote:

I wonder if there are both sealed beam and bulb in housing lamps

headlight/fog light assembly?

I guess that's possible.

A bad torque converter wouldn't last 100k miles without either locking
up the converter or spraying shrapnel. I'd think it was bad clutches,
and even that transmission is ONLY an automatic tranny. A new one
from MB might cost $5k, but a rebuild most certainly will not.
Certainly if it was the converter, that comes off and is separate from
the rest of the tranny (unless there is something really weird about
it) and can be replaced separately.

Dealers no longer have service departments, they just swap in things.
Back in the day they would do tranny rebuilds, etc.

Should have taken it to a good MB knowledgeable transmission shop. We
have one here, did a great job on my brother's SDL tranny for $1500.
A lot simpler, but the mechanicals aren't that different, just more of
them.

[MBZ] Now you can't get R107 Tumblers

2014-04-26 Thread clay
I went to the dealer to order a fresh tumbler for Froggy. We spent a half hour
on the EPC trying to figure out what the heck to do . The datac ard does not
show for the car, and the parts are not available anymore. There were five
tumbler options and they all showed as being substituted to another part that
is not available. The next step substituted to having to replace the whole
lock system, but that was not able to get ordered and said to purchase a
replacement steering column. That is not available.

Parts guy plans to call Germany or maybe a Unicorn breeder so he can understand
how to resolve the issue. I am thinking the early R107 and the W116 share an
ignition lock. If there are problems getting replacement parts, all the 1970's
cars are ticking time bombs.

Anybody think a lock smith can rebuild the original?

Re: [MBZ] WANTED: Xenon Headlights

2014-04-26 Thread clay
Those are too new for the Knackers I visit. Most of the benz I see are private
party sold to the scrap yard. A late 90's car would go to insurance auction
yards and be parted professionally. Maybe in a few more years I will see the
w210 and R129s and w140's in more than one offs every year or so.

 do a proper job.

I wonder what would happen if you ground down the ends of the wafers so
that the key doesn't have to fit as precisely. You'd lose some
theftproofing, but as long as the wafers were good enough to not allow you
to turn it with a screwdriver without putting a key in, should be good
enough for an old R107 or my old W116.
