Someone over on BenzWorld is saying that in 1997 the DAS system required the

Anyone know if this is the case?

Navy Federal Credit Union is offering a one-year CD paying 5%. Limit is
$5k per CD. They are calling it a Celebrate Certificate.

If you're not already a member, you may only be eligible for a 3% rate,
which is not too shabby either.

If your savings account or emergency fund can allow some cash to be tied up
in a CD for a year, it's a great deal.

If you aren't hosting large PDF Manuals and such, have you thought about
putting it up as a WordPress blog? Basic service is free with 3 GB of
space. I believe you can use your own domain name for as little as $18.00 a
year. Hosted space, and personal websites have gotten *super* cheap in the
last several years. You could also set it up as a Tumblr.com account, but
that is typically far more pic heavy. Just a thought.

[MBZ] OM603 exhaust log to turbo intake gasket

2014-09-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Dieselvolk,

Installing new head on my '87 wagon.

What would be a suitable sealant so I can re-use a metal gasket in a
high-temperature application?

Purchased the MB gasket kit, but it does not include the metal gasket for
the joint where the exhaust manifold log (replacement for the soot
oxidizer) is bolted to the turbo charger.

EPC says this gasket (352 098 02 80) does not apply to my car, but if I use
a generic rest of world car (i.e. don't plug my VIN into the EPC), then I
can get the gasket part number.

Should I go to the trouble of getting the proper gasket, or get some
sealant to re-use the old gasket?

[MBZ] OT - non-political B-52 tale - THE PATTON TAPE

2014-09-19 Thread WILTON via Mercedes

Well, I think it's non-political, anyway. (YMMV)

THE PATTON TAPE
By Wilton Strickland

During the entire time that I was flying B-52 bombing missions from Guam
and Thailand to Vietnam in '72, the movie Patton was still fresh in people's
minds. I was on a mission over Vietnam one day in late summer when
suddenly, George C. Scott's voice as General Patton came on the inter-plane
radio with a short excerpt from Patton's speech to the troops just before
the invasion of Normandy. I don't remember the exact excerpt, but I thought
it was appropriate for the moment. Several days later, I mentioned the
Patton comment during a pre-mission briefing; another crewman in the
briefing claimed to be the culprit and offered me a copy of the tape. I
borrowed a friend's recorder and, using his recorder and mine, I was able
index the tape so that I could readily select and play short excerpts as
desired.
The crew electronic warfare officer (EW) carried an official recorder on
each flight. This recorder was issued to EW before each mission and
returned by him at the end of each mission; it was rigged so that nobody
could access or alter the tape, and recorded everything said on the aircraft
intercom and received by the aircraft radios. Wanting to keep a record for
myself in case anything more interesting happened, I had a technician in the
aircraft electronics shop make a short cord for me that allowed me to plug
my personal recorder into the aircraft radio system. I carried this
recorder on every mission except the last two to Hanoi in December. (A
friend on another crew borrowed my special cord the night of Dec. 26th and
was shot down over Hanoi.) On the last two missions, I was able to transmit
from my recorder, though, by playing it and holding a radio headset
microphone against the speaker shielded by my hand and a handkerchief.
Occasionally during a mission, I would select a Patton excerpt
appropriate for the moment. Sometimes, just before takeoff, for example, I'd
be proud to lead you wonderful guys into battle anytime, anywhere.
En route to the target, I sometimes transmitted, You know, I actually
pity those poor bastards we're going up against, by God, I do.
For three months or so, I played several Patton excerpts on each
mission. B-52 crewmen began to expect to hear something from Patton each
time out. The talk around base was, Who's playing Patton - who's doing
that? I never said a word, but several knew who was doing it.
I continued transmitting the Patton excerpts at appropriate times,
even during the Linebacker II missions to Hanoi. En route on those
missions, I would play, for example, Some of you boys I know are wondering
whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can
assure you that you will all do your duty. (Several crewmen who heard
these transmissions have told me during the last few years that their fear
and anxiety were greatly relieved by them.)
Returning to U-Tapao, Thailand, after a surprisingly quiet mission to a
target, Thai Nguyen Steel Mills and Rail Yards 35 nautical miles north of
Hanoi on the night of December 29th, I was confident that it was the last
night of the campaign. I had seen photos of the complete destruction in the
areas struck by B-52's since the 18th and did not think there was another
target left in North Vietnam worthy of a B-52 strike. They were out of
missiles and ammo, and we were out of targets. Mine was the next-to-last
B-52 of the nearly 100 to visit Hanoi that night. I was confident that we
had won the war and that it would soon end as we departed the Hanoi area for
the last time.
Forty five minutes or so before landing back in Thailand, I transmitted
a Patton excerpt that I thought was appropriate for a such a finale: For
over a thousand years, the Roman conquerors, returning from the wars,
enjoyed the honor of the triumph - a tumultuous parade. In the procession
came trumpeters, musicians and strange animals from the conquered
territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments.
The conqueror rode in a triumphant chariot, the day's prisoners walking in
chains before him. Sometimes, his children, robed in white, stood with him
in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the
conqueror, holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning that
all glory is fleeting.

I am sure you included the excerpt that goes something like Your job is not
to die for your country, but to make the other poor bastard die for his
country! Great movie. Twelve O'clock High goes well with it.

THE PATTON TAPE
By Wilton Strickland

During the entire time that I was flying B-52 bombing missions from Guam
and Thailand to Vietnam in '72, the movie Patton was still fresh in people's
minds. I was on a mission over Vietnam one day in late summer when suddenly,
George C. Scott's voice as General Patton came on the inter-plane radio with a
short excerpt from Patton's speech to the troops just before the invasion of
Normandy. I don't remember the exact excerpt, but I thought it was appropriate
for the moment. Several days later, I mentioned the Patton comment during a
pre-mission briefing; another crewman in the briefing claimed to be the
culprit and offered me a copy of the tape. I borrowed a friend's recorder
and, using his recorder and mine, I was able index the tape so that I could
readily select and play short excerpts as desired.
The crew electronic warfare officer (EW) carried an official recorder on
each flight. This recorder was issued to EW before each mission and returned
by him at the end of each mission; it was rigged so that nobody could access or
alter the tape, and recorded everything said on the aircraft intercom and
received by the aircraft radios. Wanting to keep a record for myself in case
anything more interesting happened, I had a technician in the aircraft
electronics shop make a short cord for me that allowed me to plug my personal
recorder into the aircraft radio system. I carried this recorder on every
mission except the last two to Hanoi in December. (A friend on another crew
borrowed my special cord the night of Dec. 26th and was shot down over Hanoi.)
On the last two missions, I was able to transmit from my recorder, though, by
playing it and holding a radio headset microphone against the speaker shielded
by my hand and a handkerchief.
For three months or so, I played several Patton excerpts on each
mission. B-52 crewmen began to expect to hear something from Patton each time
out. The talk around base was, Who's playing Patton - who's doing that? I
never said a word, but several knew who was doing it.
I continued transmitting the Patton excerpts at appropriate times,
even during the Linebacker II missions to Hanoi. En route on those missions, I
would play, for example, Some of you boys I know are wondering whether or not
you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that
you will all do your duty. (Several crewmen who heard these transmissions
have told me during the last few years that their fear and anxiety were greatly
relieved by them.)
Returning to U-Tapao, Thailand, after a surprisingly quiet mission to a
target, Thai Nguyen Steel Mills and Rail Yards 35 nautical miles north of Hanoi
on the night of December 29th, I was confident that it was the last night of
the campaign. I had seen photos of the complete destruction in the areas
struck by B-52's since the 18th and did not think there was another target left
in North Vietnam worthy of a B-52 strike. They were out of missiles and ammo,
and we were out of targets. Mine was the next-to-last B-52 of the nearly 100
to visit Hanoi that night. I was confident that we had won the war and that it
would soon end as we departed the Hanoi area for the last time.
Forty five minutes or so before landing back in Thailand, I transmitted
a Patton excerpt that I thought was appropriate for a such a finale: For
over a thousand years, the Roman conquerors, returning from the wars, enjoyed
the honor of the triumph - a tumultuous parade. In the procession came
trumpeters, musicians and strange animals from the conquered territories,
together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conqueror
rode in a triumphant chariot, the day's prisoners walking in chains before him.
Sometimes, his children, robed in white, stood with him in the chariot or rode
the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror, holding a golden crown

Re: [MBZ] OM603 exhaust log to turbo intake gasket

2014-09-19 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
I've used the sealant that comes with exhaust pipe/muffler patch/repair kits on
similar applications. None were turbo, but I doubt the turbo temps would be
enough higher to make a difference. I've also found that used gaskets, both
metal and non-metal, work better if they are carefully wire brushed and then
used with a sealant. Also, there seems to be quite a few more sealants at
FLAPS than in years gone by. Some may be specific for exhaust level temps.

[MBZ] Value of 04 E320 Wagon?

2014-09-19 Thread LarryT via Mercedes
Stopped and looked at a champagne e320 Station Wagon with 134K Miles and
absolutely flawless paint. Not even any chips. My wife is smitten and
can't stop talking about it which would be great if it were a diesel
;-) Anyway, the small used car shop is asking $13,500 with his
financing and $11,800 cash.

I'm a little hesitant about a gas car but it started instantly and idled
smoothly and quietly. May have a test ride next week

The interior was also flawless and it had all the typical options
including the 3rd seat. What kind of price is normal for this car? I
know there Kelly BB and other sources but I trust your opinions more.

What say you all?

Subject: [MBZ] OM603 exhaust log to turbo intake gasket

 Dieselvolk,

Installing new head on my '87 wagon.

What would be a suitable sealant so I can re-use a metal gasket in a high-
 temperature application?

Purchased the MB gasket kit, but it does not include the metal gasket for
the
joint where the exhaust manifold log (replacement for the soot
oxidizer) is bolted to the turbo charger.

EPC says this gasket (352 098 02 80) does not apply to my car, but if I
use a
generic rest of world car (i.e. don't plug my VIN into the EPC), then I
can get
 the gasket part number.

Should I go to the trouble of getting the proper gasket, or get some
sealant to
 re-use the old gasket?

[MBZ] OT: Cub Cadet finale

2014-09-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
To finish up my Cub Cadet wiring adventure, it turns out that when the previous
owner ran a line to the batt terminal of the regulator all he actually had to
do was to move the grey wire from the hot side of the starter to one side of
the ammeter. I actually spliced the grey wire to a little of the previous
owner's very long wire since the grey wire had quite a large ring terminal on
it. Viola it works, that easy. One downside is that it doesn't measure when
cranking since that comes off the switched side of the starter switch but
everything else is measured including the
headlights.

With the ammeter sorted I took a look at the bracket which at one point must
have been chromed but is now just rust. I let it soak for a few hours in a bath
of evapo-rust, then cleaned it, dried it and hit it with some primer and yellow
paint.

I let it dry overnight and then sprayed the backside. When that was mostly dry
I baked it in my toaster oven but had the heat too high and bubbled the paint.
That subsided into an interesting crackle look which goes with the mostly
rotten paint on the rest of the tractor.

When I turn on the headlights the charge rate dips for a second before it goes
back to normal. I was pleased to see that the starter/generator charges even at
very low engine speed. My other Cub Cadet seems to want more engine speed
before it charges, I guess I should order a starter/generator rebuild kit for
that one as well.

After all that fun I took a few minutes to add slime to the left front tire
which was low and put some grease in all the zerks.

Most importantly I was able to start the tractor cold without starting fluid
for the first time in about a year. I was so happy with it I went out and
bought a padded seat cover. The machine had one when I first bought it but it
got torn off last spring so I'd spent a year sitting with a dirty old towel on
the metal seat. I'm ready to plow snow in luxury.
