Re: [MBZ] Tire conundrum

2014-12-28 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

I noticed today that we will have to replace the tires on our '95 E320
soon. The questions are, then, what sizes of what types to get.

I have two sets of rims,

124 401 18 02
6-1/2 J x 15 H2 ET 44

and,

210 401 06 02
7-1/2 J x 16 H2 ET 41.

So do I put Nokian WRG2 tires (all-season tires with the mountain and
snowflake symbol and excellent winter performance) on the 16" rims like I
now have.

Or do I put a set of them on the 15" rims?

Or do I get some real winter tires and some decent summer tires? And
which rims to put them on?

So many decisions, particularly not knowing when we will sell our
home and move to Indiana ...

Craig

I think I'd opt for rubber band tars on the 16s and put Blizzaks on
the 15s. The higher profile and more cushion would be beneficial for
winter driving. (of course in this scenario money is unlimited.

For one set on one set of rims, I'd use the 15s, but I am not a fan
of rubber band tars, unless you only drive on a race track.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Solar powered concrete 50-footer

2014-12-28 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
SC finally passed a law recently to allow 3rd parties to install solar
power and bill for it monthly, so amortizing the install with monthly
payments, and I guess they will maintain it. Consumer relationship to
the electric company is the same but they have to buy excess power.
Here in SC the electric company is sorta quasi-public, so the
politicians are pretty much in their pockets, and the electric co in
theirs. They are also trying to fund 2 new nuke plants which requires a
large up-front investment, so solar power runs kinda counter to that.

Politics and economics and technology do not always coexist well.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Solar powered concrete 50-footer

2014-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I went with the largest one I thought would work for my attic - the house is
single story, roughly 2400 sf. I believe it was around $400, and I installed
it. Installation was pretty simple with a sawzall and a few hand tools.

As far as savings, it’s tough for me to quantify the fan’s contribution as I
did it in concert with a number of other changes, such as having all my
ductwork sealed (it’s in the attic space) and sealing nearly every possible
opening in the house. LED lighting was installed in all common areas as well.

I did a blower door test after the changes to the building envelope and had a
2.6 ACH, which is considered extremely tight.

In general, the upfits I did have lowered our electric (AC) bills in the
hottest months about $30-$40 a month. That’s for a year’s worth of data with
degree days being nearly equal to the year prior without the upfits. I would
guesstimate the annual savings at around $200-$300.

There is quite a conflict in the HVAC business over the use of attic
ventilation fans - mainly due to the misapplication of them to homes that are
not properly sealed. What often happens is an attic fan is installed and it
lowers the air pressure inside the attic. This in itself isn’t a bad thing
until you consider what the largest exposed heated or cooled surface is in the
attic - the ceiling. Any, and I mean ANY leaks in the building envelope will
allow tempered air from the inside of the house to be pulled out of the
building and into the attic space. In other words, installing an attic fan can,
and often does, increase energy usage because the house system has to make up
the heated or cooled air being pulled out of it.

The other issue is proper attic ventilation - if the attic isn’t properly
vented to begin with, an attic fan won’t help and is a waste of money.

I was lucky in that the builder over designed the ventilation for my attic by
about a factor of 30%-40%. The builder for our previous home down here did
not, and we’re seeing people in our old neighborhood having to replace roofs
after as few as 10 years. The temperatures were so high in some of these roof
spaces that they were literally baking the decking and causing it to fail,
along with the shingles.

If you’re thinking about an attic fan, I would either employ the services of a
trusted HVAC contractor or do your due diligence and make sure the house is
sealed up as tight as possible. Our local electrical utility provided the duct
sealing and blower door tests at no or reduced cost, along with an energy audit.

Along these same lines, we’re considering putting in a whole house
dehumidifier. That’s mainly because our AC unit is marginal for the
application, but it’s nearly new, so we don’t want to replace it (it was
installed by the previous owner just before we purchased the house.) It
struggles to cool the house on the hottest days, which also means it isn’t
doing a good job of dehumidification. A whole house dehumidifier would lessen
the load on the AC unit by allowing us to run it at a higher setpoint and is a
lot less expensive (~$1200) than replacing the AC unit.

A good friend is an industrial AC guy and has been a great resource for
information. He was the one who told me the first thing I should do is seal
the house up….

Folks

I know vacuum pots well

my mother had a few in the 60's and i used to use the Silex units

they are pricey now

you can put one together by buying parts on ebay

2014-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Interesting reference to Florida and solar power.

There’s little effort on the part of utilities in Florida to get involved with
solar power at the consumer level. For that matter, I believe some have even
legislated against it. I understand why, but in a place like this where we get
sunny days nearly year round wouldn’t it make sense to promote solar energy?

I would jump at the chance to do solar, but there’s a huge risk in that if
you’re not in it for the long haul you’ll lose. If I did a solar installation
here and sold the house five years down the road I would either lose money or
have to increase the sale price to cover the long term commitments solar
requires. There are some companies who are leasing installations, but there’s
concerns over how to handle those leases when the property changes hands.

I have a solar powered attic fan…..

My son (owner of a 3-pedal 240D) has been making us coffee with the

it certainly delivers on flavor and aroma!

improved flavor?

Nope! Not at all! Nothing like a campfire, or a woodstove for heat,
or smoking meat (and smoked meat, cheese, or fish) Woodfires are
good. (For those of Irish extraction, substitute a peat fire)

Coal smoke reminds me of home, of coal fired locomotives, Steam
traction engines, my summer in England, and my time in the hollers of
Kentucky.

It is all good. God designed systems that take the smoke out of the
air. They are called plants, lightening and rain. These cleansers
also take human exhaust and change it into good things. Conversely,
animals and people take the exhaust of plants, and turn it into good
things.

I bet my homemade venison pastrami will beat your cat poo jelly. The
pastrami was smoked 10-12 hours and it is wonderful.

Re: [MBZ] Oil question.

2014-12-28 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
In one of our last moves the pump parts of the two Topsiders I have
disappeared. I still use the cans for waste oil storage, but I have
to keep them up on pallets so they don't leave oily rings on the
floor. Both of them leak through the bottom seams.

I have one of the LiquiVac eight quart units. It's plastic, but it
does a great job, is easy to keep clean and store, and doesn't leak.

I looked at the fancier upright oil extractors like the MityVac, but
they're a PITA to have to store. The LiquiVac is small and easily
stuck in a cabinet or on a shelf. Can't do that with the upright
ones like the MityVac. Of course there are the larger metal tannk
style models, but I don't do that many oil changes and the storage
space is an issue, too.

Dan

My Soda Fire 'xtinguishers are easy to store, and the seams don't
pop. they are 316 Stainless and easy to clean up. They can be left
outsides and don't deteriorate. The hose is heavy and does not
collapse, no matter how thick the oil. They are all you need, except
for a source of vacuum to attach to the schrader (tire) valve.

Man will never make the transition from tree ape to ground ape.

The tree ape defecates and it falls to the ground, he doesn't care
because he doesn't walk in it. The ground ape defecates and it falls
to the ground, he doesn't care because he has no where else to put
it and does not care to stop eating to stop defecating, so he walks
around it, walks through it, or generally blames it on another ape
while continuing to defecate himself.

There are a group of humans currently dedicated to the false logic
that "it's not my defecation" while seizing on some construct of
logic that claims theirs stinks less or makes less mess than anyone
else s. All the while continuing to enjoy the full cultural benefits
of regular defecation [driving cars, using public transport,
shopping in stores where all the goods are brought by smelly diesel
trucks, buying goods made in foreign countries which have no "don't
defecate on the ground [ie EPA] rules, et al.

Such foolishness. Most who now make complaint have never built a
fire to survive without shelter, never missed an episode of "The
Kardassians", enjoy the full benefit of public power and transport.
Thus, have little to draw from as to why the tree ape became a
ground ape in the first place [metaphorically ].

Get primitive if you truly believe. Cast off all the things made by
industry and delivered by transportation. Live each winter without
heat or shelter [remember, both take energy, which pollute by your
logic]. Give up gainful employment, it takes energy to travel to
your work, heat and cool the workplace, move the goods.. A.. but
you can't do that.. you would soon starve and then "stop defecating"
...

My, ohhh my,,, what a problem... well... back to the trees.
which you already cut down to make fire and heat.. and shelter...
ooopps..

Grant... Who loves the visible steam cloud coming off the cooling
ponds at the local Nuclear power plant. It's not clean, but it moves
the large steaming pile of public defecation into the next 35

The trick is to recharge the electric cars at night when there is excess
generation capacity that has to be dealt with anyway. A more constant
demand for electricity will make the utilities more efficient, or at least
easier to manage. There will still be more coal, gas, uranium, etc. used,
but it will be less than if the new demand is one top of the current peak
load times. TANSTAAFL.

Yes, it’s important to have fun. Especially with a German car. You can

Re: [MBZ] Oil question.

2014-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
In one of our last moves the pump parts of the two Topsiders I have
disappeared. I still use the cans for waste oil storage, but I have to keep
them up on pallets so they don’t leave oily rings on the floor. Both of them
leak through the bottom seams.

I have one of the LiquiVac eight quart units. It’s plastic, but it does a
great job, is easy to keep clean and store, and doesn’t leak.

I looked at the fancier upright oil extractors like the MityVac, but they’re a
PITA to have to store. The LiquiVac is small and easily stuck in a cabinet or
on a shelf. Can’t do that with the upright ones like the MityVac. Of course
there are the larger metal tannk style models, but I don’t do that many oil
changes and the storage space is an issue, too.

Re: [MBZ] Euro Climate Controls

2014-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Here are a some things to consider that make my situation unique:

My SL500 has a rebuilt title. The car is solid, the work was done and well
documented. I would challenge the typical owner to find anything on this car
that would give it away as having a rebuilt title, other than the sticker on
the A pillar the state put there when it was inspected. The insurance
companies don’t care and will insure it for market value. To them it’s no
different than a “regular” car.

Being a rebuilt title, people are afraid of it. No dealer would ever take it
on trade. It’s a bastard. Retail for a non-rebuilt example like mine would be
around $8k. With the rebuilt title it’s worth maybe $5k, and that’s if I could
find a buyer. That being said, it has 81k on it and is in excellent condition.
Everything works and is in great shape. I have a set of R230 staggered 18”
wheels for it, too. A really nice performance upgrade.

Additional considerations:

While it sounds crazy, a convertible in Florida is not that great. Right now
it’s nice, as the weather is decent and will be until March or early April.
Once “summer” kicks in, you’re going to be hot, humid and broiled by the sun.
I have gotten a sunburn on my forehead after two days of driving it home with
the top down in the summer months. My drive takes me around 25 minutes
doorstep to doorstep.

Say what you want, but the R129 styling is soulless. The remarks about it
looking like a Mustang are all too true. Other than the tristar on the grille,
it’s tough to pick it out of the crowd.

While I do enjoy driving the car, it’s more impractical than I expected it to
be. I need a sedan more often than I need a coupe. Luckily the wife has a
sedan.

It rides like an old wooden skateboard with metal wheels. It’s definitely the
tighter, harsher ride of a W124 rather than the comfy, living room couch ride
of a W140.

I really like it with the hard top on. It’s a tight, quiet ride that you would
expect from a sports car of its vintage. Gas mileage is pretty decent with the
hard top on, too, although I never had expectations that this car would sip
gasoline. I get 18-19 mpg with the hard top on. That number drops to maybe 15
mpg with the soft top up or down. Lots of air resistance in either one of
those modes.

While I might consider a swap, I’m beginning to think about picking up a W140
beater off of CL and just keeping it in reserve. I really don’t have the
driveway space, but there are a bunch of late 90s W140s around that need
cosmetics or just a serious Martha’ing to be decent drivers.

I have some concerns about using a 36 year old car as a daily driver. While
there’s no reason it couldn’t be, I fear the risk of a needed repair and
availability of parts could cause me problems. There is no question this car
is sorted, and sorted well. Other than the climate control issue, which has
got to be relatively simple to resolve, this car has had a level of maintenance
and upkeep almost unheard of. That doesn’t mean something won’t break, but the
big issues like timing chains and valves, for example, have been addressed in
the recent past.

I’m not looking to flip the car - there’s no way you could make any money on
it. I am looking for a daily driver sedan.

I don’t know what I will do. I’ve got to sleep on this for a while and mull it
over before I take any action. I will probably sit on it until next weekend
and then go take a look.

2014-12-28 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Don’t know. There are a number of different green colors used in that time
frame, and you can’t trust the color rendering of the pictures. It looks like
Silver Green Metallic (861) but I’m not sure. It’s light enough to be Cypress
Green Metallic as well (876).

Thanks, Dwight. I have never owned a W116. There’s a gap in my ownership from
W114s to W123s that I might need to fill. I will say that people who have had
W116s really seem to like them.

I’m toying with the possibility of taking a look a this car. The more I speak
with the owner the more I find out about its history and the piles of spares
and extra parts the original owner passed along with the car. There is no
question it was overmaintained, which is good. The only real issue would be if
the owner is interested in a trade for my 97 SL500, as I’m not paying $6500 for
a W116.

We’ll see. I may reach out to him tomorrow and see if he wants to get
together. It’s a good two hour drive, so I am not going to be passing back and
forth numerous times. I’ll look and make a decision after I’ve seen the car.
