I saw that yesterday, quite interesting.  We looked into some bird stuff 
when I was in kawledge, always fascinating to see nature's (intelligent) 
designs.


I was on the farm once some years ago, went out for a stroll late one 
night and there was a big owl sitting on top of the barn.  I stopped and 
stood there and watched it a few minutes while it watched me.  I decided 
to head back in and as I was walking back it flew right over my 
shoulder, wings almost touched my head, and I could not hear it a bit.  
(WHOA that was a surprise!)  It was pretty cool, I probably had stirred 
up a mouse or something, it flew right down to the ground in front of me 
but did not grab anything.


There is a place here called the Center for Birds of Prey that rescues 
injured birds and rehabilitates them.  Some can't go back to the wild so 
they keep them and go our and do demonstrations here and there.  I have 
been to a few and one time they had a big owl, when it flew you couldn't 
hear it either but the hawks and eagles made a fair amount of whooshing 
noises.

the University of Cambridge, along with three U.S. institutions, used
high-resolution microscopy to examine the structure of owl wings and their
feathers to see if it could be replicated.

Much of the noise caused by a wing – whether it's attached to a bird, a
plane or a fan – originates at the trailing edge where the air passing over
the wing surface is turbulent, lead researcher, Professor Nigel Peake,
said in a statement.

The structure of an owl's wing serves to reduce noise by smoothing the
passage of air as it passes over the wing – scattering the sound so their
prey can't hear them coming.

brake rotors but it turns out I also need to replace the RF caliper,
which is toast.  :(

I need a (preferably ATE) used or rebuilt caliper ASAP.  What are my

'Reminds me:  Early one morning 'bout 30 years ago, I was at  my van in the 
driveway of a rental house I had then preparing to do some painting there. 
I heard a gaggle of geese honking behind some trees a half block or so away, 
and I looked up to see them climbing out from a small lake behind the trees 
and coming straight toward me.  As they continued pumping their wings hard 
in the climb, I could hear the steady, nearly imperceptible hiss of their 
slipstream interspersed with the rhythmic swoosh of their wings in perfect 
unison - a beautiful sound and a beautiful sight on a quiet, still morning. 
Also interesting to note their gear-up and perfectly tucked in to complete 
beautifully streamlined undersides.

Our corporate travel department was actually a separate business, so the more 
they sold the more money they made. I have no idea where the business class 
travel policy came from, but I know it was corporate-wide.

I got into a big tiff with them once over some travel to Australia and New 
Zealand. I had a voucher from NWA for a $2000 business class round trip to 
Sydney that I wanted to use for a business trip Down Under. Corporate travel 
wouldn't let me use it because they had committed to United to use them for 
that route. The United fare was around $5,000, if I recall correctly. I know 
the difference was pretty substantial.

We get spiffs from the airlines for committing to book with them, which is why 
we have to use United, was Corporate Travel's reasoning for spending twice 
what it would otherwise cost.

How much of that spiff comes back to my department? I asked.

Yeah, right. So I ended up going Down Under on United for twice what it would 
have cost me otherwise

Here's some more twisted corporate logic:

The Company wanted to get its hands on frequent flyer miles, but since these 
were earned by the individual there was really no way for them to do it. Now 
maybe they could have by working something out with the airlines, but 
administering it in a company of +8,000 people would have been a real nightmare.

So our head corporate counsel, who also happened to be the owner's wife, comes 
up with this plan:

You accumulate frequent flyer miles. You use them to book business travel. When 
you do so, Corporate will reimburse you for the lowest published fare for that 
route.

Oh, and yes, the reimbursement will be taxed as personal income.

So I use my frequent flyer miles to fly to LA and back. This is probably worth 
maybe $500 booking normally using my miles. Corporate Travel combs through the 
prices from every possible carrier that flys the same route and finds a $99 
fare. I get a reimbursement check for $99.00 less taxes. Good deal, eh?

Needless to say, this policy died a pretty quick death.

No flames here - I'm with you all the way on this one. I would do the same, 
much as I did with the S420 alternator recently.

This is the one gripe I have with Advance, which has two stores within 4 miles 
of my house. If the part isn't in stock at a store, you can't order and pick it 
up from the store despite it being in their warehouse nearby.

I have tried doing an end run by asking them to order a part in to the store 
then letting me buy it when they add it to inventory, but they won't order 
something in unless you pay for it upfront.

Such corporate management decisions really point out why so few people stay
with a company these days. Instead, corporations spend huge sums to head
hunters to lure fresh victims into the mismanagement fold for a few short
years before they leave in disgust over such silly use of funds.

Somewhere, deep inside the 3 piece suit and wingtip shoes is the cave man
that says, I risk my life to kill the beast which I bring back to the cave
for the clan and then I watch the incompetents spoil and waste it.

I'm pretty sure there is a special hand signal that is given when that
caveman leaves the corporation.. ... I'm pretty sure I got that part
right.. yep...

 nightmare.

 So our head corporate counsel, who also happened to be the owner's wife,
 comes up with this plan:

 You accumulate frequent flyer miles. You use them to book business travel.
 When you do so, Corporate will reimburse you for the lowest published fare
 for that route.

 Oh, and yes, the reimbursement will be taxed as personal income.

 So I use my frequent flyer miles to fly to LA and back. This is probably
 worth maybe $500 booking normally using my miles. Corporate Travel combs
 through the prices from every possible carrier that flys the same route and
 finds a $99 fare. I get a reimbursement check for $99.00 less taxes. Good
 deal, eh?

 Needless to say, this policy died a pretty quick death.

That's what I am gonna do.  The stupid part is that I have to take time off
to go to the store to buy it (can't use my credit card over the phone),
then return tomorrow morning after it has been delivered from the
warehouse.

The other option is to purchase the RF caliper from Advance online but then
it can only be shipped to my house, which entails an extra day of waiting
and uncertainty.

Price is only $66 + $10 core for an ATE compatible rebuild, and the core
can be returned be to any AAP store.  My tech has no experience with these
rebuilt units so I am taking a chance...

And yes, I am usually a purist about parts but in this case the new one
from the dealer is a Bendix, not ATE, and would cost me $425.00 + a 2 day
wait.

I got some rebuilds from Jabba for a bit less than that I think but 
there is the core issue (I have 2 I need to return for some $$). You'll 
probably have to take the old one back to the auto parts store so they 
can also send it to some 3rd-world hellhole to be rebuilt by child 
slaves, no biggie.

The Cardone calipers I bought from Rusty have worked well ever since, but 
installing them was a little weird. I grabbed the usual metric wrenches and 
sockets and soon had them both installed, but when it came to the bleeder 
valves, none of the wrenches fit. Cardone had drilled and rethreaded the 
calipers for U.S. bleeder valves which were bigger. So, if you don't have 
U.S. as well as metric wrenches, it might save you some time to pick up a U.S. 
box/open end wrench that fits the bleeder valves when you get them from the 
FLAPS store.

[MBZ] My shaky front end is FIXED on my 95 E300D

Over the weekend I changed center steering link, the right tie rod assembly, 
and the idler arm bushing. The left tie rod assembly was changed earlier. I no 
longer get the front end shake above sixty. I actually need to be careful to 
watch my speed as I did like the vibration I had above 60 mph. I also had all ( 
4 ) tires balance rechecked. I could see wear on the OD of Idler arm bushings.

Not sure what part or combination of parts fixed the issue, but it is gone. 
Alignment must be pretty close as I do not sense any pull one direction or the 
other.
