Horn issue sounds like a ground problem.

Glow plug issue may be the diagnostics in the relay telling you that the system
has a problem (usually one or two burned out glow plugs, but maybe related to
the horn issue).

Re: [MBZ] 1985 300D - Intermittent glow light while driving

2015-06-25 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes

There are only a few ground clusters, it's well worth the time to
disassemble, clean, and reassemble them. Many weird things can
be cured that way. Also check and possibly clean contacts in
the fuse box; check/clean/replace fuses. The horn doesn't
have a relay, it's a circuit that's as simple as it can get.
Either the power feed (fuse) side is weak, or the ground is.

The GP relay is fairly stupid in that vintage, so if it's
coming on it's either sick inside, or the key signal to it
is flickering. (That can be the ignition switch.) It doesn't
have much of an agenda.

And of course, don't forget the 'mother lode': the battery
and its connectors.

[MBZ] OT my friend Bill

2015-06-25 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I am not posting this expecting any sort of response, none really needed
or wanted. I just wanted to share this interview of my friend Bill
after the shootings here last week. Sometimes he's a little over the
top but generally speaks the truth as he sees it, which is sometimes not
what I see or agree with but I respect it. He has been through a lot
around here since the 50s. He served in Korea and was wounded just a
few days before Christmas, and still has PTSD over that experience that
comes out around the holidays. But he is strong and works through it.

He is indeed a troublemaker, of the good kind, and has given me a lot of
inspiration in fighting a lot of what the local gummint idiots (and SC
has a considerable supply) are trying to do. He has made me rethink a
lot of what I knew and challenged a lot of thinking, and shared a lot
of local lore that should be in history books but probably never will
be, most of which is A Very Good Thing. Still fighting the good fight
at 80, which is in itself inspiring.

To me a 140 looks like an overweight 124. Always has. A 124 looks
tiny beside a 123, and it reminds me of driving my Karmann Ghia,
sitting sideways with your feet crammed into a tiny hole between the
wheelwell and the tunnel. Straight on from the rear a 140 looks like
a baby Benz. From the front and side a 140 looks like any other asian
car.

RE: the aerodynamic arguments: I call BS on the idea that because of
cafe and fuel economy all cars have to look the same. Two of the
slickest cars ever: VW beetle, and the Cord. Both from the 30s.
Neither look like the current load of carp. The SS and SSK, 540K,
300SL and even the lowly 190SL were not far from the slickest cars
ever. Even the adenauer was slick. None of them look like the
current load of crap (or carp, whichever you prefer) cars.

There is however the chicken and egg argument. most asian cars copy
everything MB does, and even beat MB to the market with new designs.
It is hard to argue that.

The asian manufacturing is much more agile than ameroEuro
manufacturing. Dr. Deming taught them well. They have been at it for
70 years, while the US has only been using agile manufacturing 20
years, and it is slower catching on in Yurp.

Aerodynamics and fuel economy standards drive a lot of the design and
shape and openings and such. It seems there is not a lot of latitude
for designers when every maker is trying to get low drag. And the Asians
are fairly adept at copying stuff so that their next iterations look a
lot like the next iterations of whatever was copied, or vice-versa.

I saw something a coupla days ago that looked like the older E-class
then when I got closer it was a Lexus or Hyundai or something. It's
like they bought the tooling for the lights and trunk and rear end and
just built their own car.

Anyhow, the car has a new windshield and gasket, so I don't think it is

Anyone BTDT? is the sunroof the right place to look? Or should I try

Been avoiding the sunroof because I don't want any of the fiddly parts to
break and cause a great cash outlay. It probably has not opened for 10 yrs.

Front is dry. Before the new windshield and gasket, it peed on your

Re: [MBZ] My shaky front end is FIXED on my 95 E300D

2015-06-25 Thread Robert Massmann via Mercedes
Haven't work on the back but I think it must be done as every time I go over
sharp bumps, I get knock sounds from something in the back. It has been a
bit annoying lately. There are a lot of linkages back there.

I ended up with a very nice ride this afternoon after taking my car in for
an alignment. I haven't found any shops here that have the special equipment
so I took it to the dealer. I had a 50 dollar service coupon so it won't be
to bad. But they had to give me a loaner car for the night a brand new C300
4matic. It only has 2600 miles on it. What a nice ride, quite a change from
my 20 year old E300. I had to get some tutoring before I left for general
operation of the vehicle.

That sounds like me. Had to replace vacuum pump and timer, re-seal all the
delivery valves, then found a complete suspension rebuild was needed, front
and rear.

You should check the outer bearings on the spring (bottom) link at the
wheel carrier -- they go bad when the boots fail, causing the rear end
to wander and knocking noises.

Could also be a shock that has leaked enough oil for the pressurizing
piston to hit the operating piston on large bumps.

I'm in the process of replacing the outer bearings on my cars, along
with a lot of other stuff -- taking a long time as I was sick most of
the winter and just now getting back into shape to bang on rear
suspension stuff.
