Re: [MBZ] Max's work list today

2015-09-20 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
Yes. The OM621 shows a suspended reservoir that is hooked up to the
fuel supply side of the IP.

I don't know why they dropped the drip tube method for the OM60x.
Seems like it should work. Biggest problem is there is no good way
to turn the crank without taking out the radiator & etc.

Curly, I had to read that a couple times before I understood how it
would work. I think I've got it; while the IP plunger is rising but
the chamber opening is still exposed, delivery hasn't started and
the fuel flows out instead of up. Once the chamber opening is
covered, further movement of the plunger pushes the fuel up into the
dv.

As I see it, the trick for using a start-of-delivery method is
"pressurizing" the IP circuit without a priming pump. A gravity-fed
reservoir would do it.

#1 cyl. turn the engine very slowly when you are coming up to the
timing mark. When the fuel just begins to rise, the delivery is
starting. I set the time 1 to 2 degrees in advance of the book spec
to allow for the fact that delivery actually started, and that the DV
spring had to be overcome. It has always worked on the cast iron
head engines.

I don't like disturbing the DV just to do timing. It increases the
possibility of introducing contaminants (grit etc) into the IP.
Plus I never had extra seals and orings around to reseal the DV.

[MBZ] florida winter Q

2015-09-20 Thread Rick Hawkins Java via Mercedes
Folks

i could be persuaded to go down to florida in say jan feb march…. try to plan
it not on spring break holiday times, i guess

i'm considering getting a vintage early 90's RV … specifically an isuzu npr
chassis Safari Trek 1991 isuzu chassis and 1992 model trek. The one i'm working
on has been parked down in south alabama (in a shed) for 2 or 4 years … someone
inherited it and that is the seller

sort of a pig in a poke deal, but cheap, cheap for a class a 26 footer

my guess is that if it has relatively clean diesel that it will fire right up
with some batteries

tires and brakes might be more problematic, but this is all speculation

they are supposed to have good fuel mileage (12.5 to 16 mpg owners claim which
is about like my NPR with a 16 foot box) and i can run one on WVO just like my
NPR

so maybe i'll be riding around in that

Single wire harness, or two? I was expecting a single wire on my 124, but
there are two. The sensor has only one, and the other provides a good

Interesting.

Since the wear indicator circuit is nothing more than a wire that grounds out
to light a lamp, I’m convinced I’ll find something like this where it’s rubbing
or grounding out somewhere.

I’ll get the car in the air tomorrow night after work and take a look around.

I've got an issue with the brake pad wear light illuminating on the White

Thanks Scott, I think in my next attempt (if there is one) I'll try using
diesel instead of air. I need to figure out a cheap way to provide low
pressure fuel into the injection pump.

Just changed the oil in the White Whale, took just over an hour from "open
garage door" to cleaned up, old oil poured into empty jugs, tools put away
and entry made in car's maintenance log.

I started the car up to check for oil leaks, and wow! She starts so much
better now after the work yesterday. I don't know if I've got the IP
timing as good as it can get, but it sure is much better than it was.

Yes.

There is the red “BRAKE” indicator that will light when the parking brake is
applied or the reservoir is low. Then there is a the (: :) yellow light that

The yellow light is coming on (as is the red one as expected) when he applies

That’s what’s strange about it. The yellow light has nothing to do with the

Bubble method uses air, not fuel, and priming pump is not used. I think maybe
my IP is worn and allows air to pass regardless of plunger position? I wonder
if a priming pump could be retrofitted?

Car started more easily this a.m., far less smoke. I'm eager to see if fuel
consumption has decreased.

Re: [MBZ] Max's work list today

2015-09-20 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Curly, I had to read that a couple times before I understood how it would work.
I think I've got it; while the IP plunger is rising but the chamber opening is
still exposed, delivery hasn't started and the fuel flows out instead of up.
Once the chamber opening is covered, further movement of the plunger pushes the
fuel up into the dv.

As I see it, the trick for using a start-of-delivery method is "pressurizing"
the IP circuit without a priming pump. A gravity-fed reservoir would do it.

2015-09-20 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Nothing about drip timing. Manual says to either use the A-B light to static
tune, or there is a dynamic tune tool that uses the same port on the IP as the
A-B light and I think also a pick-up sensor for input from the pin on the
harmonic balancer disk.

Last of the OM617 engines had the same port on the IP, and offered both drip
timing or use of the aforementioned special tools.

[MBZ] Strange Brake Wear Indicator - 94 S420

2015-09-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Youngest son tells me when I got home today that his brake wear indicator is
coming on - but only when he puts the parking brake on?

We checked the pads on both front and back and they’ve got maybe 25% left, so I
wouldn’t expect to see a wear indicator light. Either way, I’m not sure why it
would come on when he puts the parking brake on - it has nothing to do with the
wear indicators, nor does anything in the owner’s manual contradict that line
of thought.

Only thing I can think of is the wire is out of place for some reason, but even
that wouldn’t typically have any effect on the parking brake.

Ideas?

I’m not going to have time to pull a wheel until tomorrow night.

That’s always an option. I think either Dwight or Fred said something about a
relative in Lakeland they visit in March.

The weather doesn’t get really unpleasant (consistently) until about mid April,
so we could easily do it then.

There are some Benzworld folks in the area who would probably be interested as
well. I’ll check with them.

For those who are into airplanes, the EAA “Sun and Fun” event is in Lakeland
every year and is usually in March or April. Supposedly the second largest EAA
gathering after Oshkosh.

Re: [MBZ] Another use for the tractor

2015-09-20 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
Having a tractor is cool! Looks like you may have needed that box blade for
counter-weight. In case you haven't experienced it, you don't want to lift
your rear wheels off the ground because you lose all control: if there is
any lateral slope or imbalance, the front axle will pivot on the trunnions
and there is a real risk of flipping the tractor on its side. Flipping is
quite dangerous for the operator and the motor and you may need another
tractor (or crane) to get it upright again.

Re: [MBZ] Max's work list today

2015-09-20 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes
The drip method is described in the OM621 manual, and I think it may
be in the 616/617 manuals. I used the primer pump to provide
pressure. It is done with Diesel fuel. I have never used air for
timing the Ip. On the OM603, I have only used the static timing lock.

The theory of the drip method is that when the plunger is not in
delivery mode, the fuel flows freely out the drip tube. At the start
of delivery, the plunger blocks the chamber and the free flow stops.
At that point, you read the position on the crank pointer.

I developed my own method for timing om621/616/617. It does NOT
involve removing the pin on the DV. I take a straw and blow the fuel
out of the flared part of the connector on the IP (DV holder) for the
#1 cyl. turn the engine very slowly when you are coming up to the
timing mark.

My approach may have been flawed, I was using my air compressor with
the regulator turned down really low, maybe I should have used lung
power?
