Tested voltage at battery, engine at idle, after a 20 minute drive today.
13.6 volts. Seems to me that the voltage regulator will regulate the
voltage lower as the battery charges, so 13.6 volts is a reading that
falls in the normal, expected range?

Recap: 124.193, 350k miles, fixed a "no charge, alternator light on"
problem by tightening up loose connections at the harness/alternator
interface.

I guess maybe suspicious might have been the better word. I just wonder why
there are so many on the market and they're cheap, relatively speaking.

There are four in the immediate area for sale on CL right now, and if you
search farther out its more like 15-20 of them. Most seem to be 1998 models.
Nearly all are around $3k price-wise.

That they are trouble and expensive to maintain unlike the MB diesels of
old.

Of course, it may be nothing more than the fact that diesel is often
more expensive than gasoline and thus much of the appeal has gone.

Randy,

For what it's worth, we looked at the EPC using the gasket number and the
"where used" function (you don't get this feature in the home version, sorry!).
There appears to have been two styles only - the three bolt flange and the four
bolt flange. Neither are still available.

250GB should be more than adequate for a Mac OS install. You might even get
away with having your Home folder on it if you don't have a huge amount of data.

I'll dig up the links for the procedure for moving your Home folder and post
them this evening or weekend.

BTW, OWC just opened one of their "garage sales" this morning. Might want to
take a look and see if they have anything else you might need.

I ordered a 4TB HGST HDD ($200, cheap for that! and these are rated the
best) and install kits for the drive and an SSD from OWC, and a 250GB
SSD and external HDD case from Newegg, should all be here Tuesday so I
can get the new stuff installed and the old HDD in the case to copy
stuff over (I have the time machine backups too if I need to do that).
Stay tuned for calls for HELP! In the meantime I will research on the
OS install on the SSD and other stuff on the HDD and how to get everyone
talking to one another, and how to do the time machine backups off 2
drives. I have a 2TB external drive for that so should be OK for awhile
until I start filling up the new internal HDD.

The machine is a 2010 so I guess a 5yr update is not unreasonable.

Re: [MBZ] Windshields and Randy's IP Actuator

2015-09-25 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Just got back from the dealer. Here's the skinny on windshields from MBUSA:

If the cars are legacy models, like a W140 or W124, the dealer has to call PPG
in Dallas, who holds all of the NOS windshields. They in turn check the
inventory and report back to the dealer as far as availability.

My parts guy said this was something completely new to him, but that it's been
a while since he had needed to look up an older windshield. He was stunned by
the low cost, too.

Do understand that if your parts guy is not motivated to check this out or
doesn't care to, you could get the "It's NLA" response, which is not the case.
Or he may just not know this is the process now. My guy seemed to find out in
short order, but I don't know from who.

As for Randy's shutoff actuator, it's very, very NLA in the EPC and Paragon.
Sorry.

That doesn't mean someone might not have an NOS one on the shelf, but it's
highly unlikely. It was suggested that he contact the Classic Center, but I
believe that he had some other sources for it?

FWIW, the last price in the system for it was around $110 USD.

Re: [MBZ] OT: how does a live MK-82 end up in a scrap yard?

2015-09-25 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Tucson is within range of the Goldwater Bombing Range, which is used for
training flights out of Luke AFB and Davis Monthan National Guard units.

Goldwater Bombing Range is a restricted military area, but it covers
thousands of square miles of raw desert, nearly impossible to patrol.

The economy is in a tailspin.. has been since 2008, Scrappers are
collecting anything not tied down, and many things that are... for
example.. some 800 homes in foreclosure [bank owned] had their air
conditioning units stolen for the scrap value, and several of them had
holes chopped through their back walls for entry. Once in, the scrap
thieves broke all the interior walls to steal the copper wiring.. all of
it..

Thus.. I suggest.. someone made a scrap run into Goldwater Range, picked up
target vehicles for scrap and found an unexploded Mark 82 laying on the
range.. sold it for scrap.. The scrap yard unloaded the truck with a crane
magnet.. put it in a pile.. the workers job would be to cut the scrap into
scrap furnace sizes.. torch work... and cut into the Mark 82.. booom..

I've seen some of these scrap monkeys in action.. they are right out of
"Mad Max" movie.. truly rough characters.

Re: [MBZ] Windshields

2015-09-25 Thread Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedes
Genuine glass is worth the money and usually not so expensive. I put a
windshield in my 300CD earlier this year and it was surprisingly cheap.

But then again, genuine everything is generally better!

I replaced an aftermarket glass that was badly chipped. Poor quality.

I don't know about that. Considering that aftermarket glass is readily
available and cheaper, I'm not sure people would place a lot of value on OE
glass. Now if they stopped making it, that's another issue

Re: [MBZ] OT: VW Golf TDI brakes

2015-09-25 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My Indy did an oil change when he did the transmission and timing belt. Fuchs I
think...

Speaking of the transmission, the proper vw manual transmission oil is thin
like ATF, I'm getting a distinct grinding noise when I go into first if the car
is moving which my '98 with the same trans doesn't do. That has Redline MTL in
it. I'm thinking I'll put MTL in this car too and see if it clears up.

A dose of RedLine and an oil change quieted my TDI down quite a bit,
and smoothed it out, too.  I don't know why better oil would make the
engine run that much smoother, but I noticed within a dozen miles or so.

I use Mobil 1 T&D, it's readily available and most of the "rated" oils
are not.
