From Tim Carter of AsktheBuilder.com, Apple El Capitan Software Update DO NOT INSTALL the El Capitan operating system update! I installed it on my laptop this past weekend and it's got more bugs in it than a restaurant dumpster that's been sitting full in the Georgia sun for the month of August. As soon as I can get the computer stable, I'll plug in my backup drive, use Time Machine and wipe the WRETCHED software off my laptop. I've been trying to edit one of my last videos of my new roof and the laptop crashes more than an inebriated patron driving a bumper car at the county fair. Apple should be ashamed of themselves for releasing a software update that's causing all these problems. Don't waste your time telling me all about PCs. That and the CD only does 32 bit processing while the C2D does 64 bit. L2 (Level 2) cache in the CD is 2MB while the C2D L2 is up to 4MB. There are also some additional features in the C2D such as memory disambiguation that allows it to process more data at once at a higher speed, but it can also get to that data faster. Pretty much any Intel PC processor you buy today is a C2D design, with the primary differences being FSB (front side bus) speed and the amount of CPU cache memory. I like electric cars, I've driven both the Fiat and the Nissan Leaf, liked 'em both although I probably like the Leaf a little more. The Leaf is much bigger than the Smart, more like the size of a Golf. It was reasonably peppy, quiet and not at all a rattly deathtrap. If they were similarly priced I'd always go to the larger car. [MBZ] in praise of 4 wheel drive
We got a taste of winter late yesterday. A bit white looking around here now. Only an inch or so but it made for slippery roads. There was a 20 car pileup on Bishop Grandin Blvd last night. One would think that people who live in the GWN would remember from year to year that one must slow down when things turn white and leave a bit more space between cars. I have been driving for about 46 winters now and I managed ok. I went to a funeral for a friend this morning which meant a drive of 30 miles or so in each direction. Took the perimeter highway from the south side, around the east side to the north side and then took a highway a few miles north from there. Windy so blowing snow and some snow on the roadway in spots. Always wonder about the spots without snow - slippery or not? Got to say that 4 wheel drive is a wonderful thing. Re: [MBZ] in praise of 4 wheel drive
4 wheel drive is most of the time a waste of gas, snow tires are a wonderful thing. I'll be putting the snows on the Jetta next week. The Golf came with nice looking all season tires, I'll give them a shot, if they don't work out I'll get a set of ugly wheels and put some snows on that too.I usually use really cheap snow tires and have had really good luck, even cheap snows are better than most all season tires in the snow and ice. My '98 Jetta was a disaster with all season tires, with snows it'll go anywhere it can keep the tires on the ground. I got narrow tires 175 something R14 where my summer tires are 185 something R14. Most folks run 205 something R14 on them... Of course last week at camp I ran the 4wd in the Dodge a bunch, found some really sloppy wet mud that challenged it. [MBZ] Generators
Washington St., particularly the Eastern part, got whacked with high winds Tuesday night. Massive power outages. My rope-pull gennys have not been behaving well, and Big Bertha was in need of minor service. Tonight I put another used starting battery on it (it takes two---24V) and replaced the heater hose vapor fuel line with a proper armored line. I hit the switch, and it cranked. I turned on the fuel, and it fired right up. We've bathed, are running laundry, and are watching House of Cards on the boob tube. Very comfortable. The hour meter was 3.6 hours when I started it. We've already run out 1/2 forklift tank of fuel, and it's chewing rapidly on the other one, which was full. _Very_ expensive showers... -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

I just bought a pristine, one owner 17" MacBook Pro that's a C2D machine. It will go up to 8Gb RAM for very little $$ and with an SSD to replace the rotating drive with be plenty fast. And this one has the BTO matte screen and dual video cards, too. The dual video card feature was unique to this model and went a long way in offloading machine cycles from the main processor. This will free up a very nice C2D unibody 15" MacBook Pro I currently use for my daily home machine. It will go on CL to subsidize the purchase of the 17" MBP. Boise is amazingly reasonable considering that it's gotten some influx of SoCal people, but not nearly as much as the more tourista areas. Cost of living is decent as well, and the climate is amazingly temperate. Large contingent of Mormon folks, but not overwhelming like SLC. You'll still be able to get caffeinated beverages and not be required to wear the special undergarments. Dan > On Nov 19, 2015, at 8:38 AM, Kaleb C.
