My Daug. and Hubby bought a new Surround Sound system for their house.
Could any of the austere group recommend a web site where we can
purchase wiring and connecters

Might want to compare with Amazon. I went to buy some ethernet patch cables
from Monoprice yesterday and their minimum shipping cost was $15.95! My $7.00
worth of cables would have totaled over $20.

They must have changed their policy. UPS and fedex are getting
rapacious, and since usps package prices are set by fedex, no relief
there now. Friday it cost $39 for 2 pages of paper to go next day.
Monoprice caters more to retailers, than DIY. Expensive shipping is
just a way to enforce a min order without having a min order.

No bargains at amazon, unless you get free shipping.

Parts express just sent this:

Yep me too. I needed some fuel hose to replace an air hose on my tire machine

trip to get it. By then would not have got it done until next weekend anyway.
So just ordered a 25' roll off amazon prime for cheaper than it would have been
to drive to get 10' and it will be here tomorrow free shipping.

Re: [MBZ] Home Audio Supplies

2015-12-21 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I jerked them around regularly with the 30 day free trials, after which I
noticed my regular orders would often languish in the "processing" stage for
2-3 days before being shipped. I suspect they were punishing me.

Last September they had a deal for Prime that was like $60. I jumped on it.

I figured I've saved that much in running around for stuff they deliver to my
door the next day for the same price or less. In the case of the SATA cables,
since Tiger Direct closed up here there's almost nowhere you can get stuff like
that locally. It was worth every penny to have them to me the next day for
free (shipping).

Blower motor is fairly easy on these.

Remove wiper arm by taking out the pinch bolt and sliding off.  Please
be careful not to slam something into the windshield.

Pull trim at base of windshield off.  Watch for loose seals, they need
to be glued back on.

Pull seal off inner firewall, then remove the screws and finger grip
knobs to allow you to remove the side tray drains (may have to do the
next step first though).  Keep screws in order, there are several sizes.

Remove small phillips head screws on the seal around the base of the
wiper motor and remove the screen over the blower motor.

Stuff rags around the heater box so you won't drop a nut in, it's real
pain. Unplug wiper motor and remove four nuts to release it.
CAREFULLY remove it, if some monkey went crazy with windshield sealant
on a replacement it's possible to have it stick badly, and you can
crack the windshield if you tip it up from the bottom too much.  One
nut is hard to see.

Unclip the outside air temp sensor and move it out of the way.

Unclip all the little steel clips that hold the upper housing of the
heater box and it will come off.

Motor is held in by a spring clip.  Pull the wires off (two, red and
blue I think).  Unclip spring clip and lift motor out.

Drop new motor in and attach wires and spring clip and test, it's a
tight fit and you don't want it rubbing on the housing.  If it's still
dead, you will need to replace the controller.  That is underneath the
blower, held in place by one screw.  Take out the screw and wrestle it
out, the factory one is huge and only comes out one way.  Wires go
through a seal on the box, you need to push it out and unplug the
harness by the brake booster and fish in out through the box.

Installation is the reverse.  Don't drop any nuts down the heater box,
they go into never-never land.

Don't forget to put the outside air temp sensor back in the hole, and
make absolutely positive that the upper housing fits together before
you try to attach the clips.

As a point of reference, I purchased a rusty but highly driveable, titled,
and street-legal 1983 turbodiesel wagon for $1400 for the express purpose
of supplying a drive train transplant into a rust-free 1983 300TD with a
blown engine. I drove the donor car down from Baltimore without incident,
then sold it to the crusher for $150 after stripping it, including the
drive train plus some very usable body (bumpers and mirrors, e.g.) and
cosmetically fine interior parts. I still have some lefet over palomino
interior door and hatch panels, so if anyone is interested contact me on or
off list.

Re: [MBZ] Merry Holiday, just divested myself of used MB parts

2015-12-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Certainly, we just need to have a nice tea with them while we talk all
about Climate Change. I'm sure if we will just reduce the carbon
footprint, they will go away happy, right?

How many years did we set with the N. Vietnamese at the "Paris Peace Talks"
without gaining one inch? How long after we carpet bombed Hanoi and
surrounding area did they back down?

War is only won when your enemy suffers so greatly that he comes to you
begging for peace. Sad, brutal, but true.

I really enjoyed seeing all of the old cars.
One thing that struck me is how different they were. Today, all cars
look pretty much the same. We have the little styling things to make us
loyal to a brand but not much more.

Re: [MBZ] Home Audio Supplies

2015-12-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
TV shows, movies documentaries etc all streaming online.
The only thing I hate about it is that it treats every season of a show as
another entry in the interface which makes the GUI very cluttered with extra
junk. I love watching shows without commercials and in the last few months
they've made it cache better. In the evening our internet gets slow so I open
an episode while finishing dinner, when I'm ready to watch most of the episode
is cached so its ready to watch.
They've got a lot of obscure fun old movies which is great.

Boo. Their Amazon produced stuff is getting high marks, I haven't watched yet
but the reviews are tops.
They've got Orphan Black, Suits, Downton Abbey, Vikings, and thats just free
stuff on Prime... You don't get shows as they air but you can after a short
delay if you're willing to pay for it.
Movies show up rapidly after release, probably the same or just slightly ahead
of DVD release. Usually for pay first, on Prime just after.

Re: [MBZ] Home Audio Supplies

2015-12-21 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
They have a lot of interesting stuff. They also just updated the
portable app so you can download stuff and take it with you to watch, I
have not done that yet but it would be great for traveling. I have not
checked out the music yet either but I downloaded the app to my
ipad/fon. I was using the apple music app but I think they changed it.

The Man in the High Castle on AP was pretty good, sorta, but the old
Benzes and other cars were fun to see.

Between Netflix (watching the latest season of Top Gear they recently
put up) and AP you can fill your evenings with background viewing while
you read the paper or whatever, and never have to see the drivel on
broadcast TV or pay for cable/sat.

There is some very good TV being made right now. I went to a Christmas party

Thing I like about the music is that you can download to listen later. The

Just a tall jack stand. Lower the lift against the stand

Re: [MBZ] 2 post lifts

2015-12-21 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
There are tall "stabilizing stands" sold for use under a car lift, which
have a wide base and a jack screw to keep the car from becoming unbalanced
while on the lift...

If you have an OSHA approved shop, you have to have those.. otherwise, you
are free to try to kill yourself, I suppose..

Also, there are transmission lifts [large variety] which are mounted on
rolling bases and allow you to support and guide the transmission for
removal and replacement.

Care should be used when using one of these because they do not go down to
floor level.. but have the transmission at about mid chest height when at
lower limit. If you try to roll the stand and transmission to the bench and
catch a wheel on an air line or drop cord, it can tip and crash.. again...
work smart.. think ahead.

All these extra items add to the tooling $$$, certainly.. but IMHO.. well
worth it..

R&R a trans on a lift becomes a 1 hr job, instead of several days of
crawling on your back. Priceless.

little we do watch is all via TiVo. But SWMBO is an English mystery junkie so
we stream a lot of Acorn TV (no relation to community organizers) shows via

Amazon Prime shipping is quite because nearby brick-and-mortar shopping is
