Re: [MBZ] Kid wrecked the car

2016-04-23 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
I once accelerated my 300SEL 3.5 sedan into the rear of a completely
stopped Acura. Bent the frame of my car and did $1500 damage to hers. I
was in insurance purgatory for a couple years before they let me back in.

This was what caused the loss of the S500 coupe. Youngster was horrible about
not observing proper distance, someone stomped on their brakes, he couldn’t
stop quickly enough because he didn’t have the room.

The majority of modern plastic car bumper systems are made of thermoplastic
olefins (TPOs), polycarbonates, polyesters, polypropylene, polyurethanes,
polyamides, or blends of these with fiberglass. It would be hard for an
individual to pick a solvent that definitely wouldn't affect at least one of
the them. Probably best to pick a reliable manufacturer that claims their
product will be safe.

Kleenstrip for aircraft claims to be safe. Since it burns the skin it's
probably acid based; oxalic acid perhaps. Water based paint removers such as
many of those with oxalates would probably be safer than volatile paint
removers IMO. Like Dimitri said, it's best to try it on an unseen area first. I
usually put it on, wait a while, and then lightly scrape it with a sharp blade
to see if any of the plastic scrapes off.

Kleenstrip customer wrote:
"An outstanding paint remover that's actually safe for plastics and urethanes
and fiberglass, and it actually works safe and fast . Wear latex gloves while
using it or it will burn your skin and remove hair. Just use as directed. Spray
on and wait 15 minutes and scrape or brush off. Wash off with soap and water.
One can would do a whole car bumper pretty easy, probably two bumpers. You
probably don't want to leave it on the project for more than 20 minutes without
inspecting the progress. There is a warning on the can from the manufacturer
about leaving it on too long."

Re: [MBZ] Imitation Klann

2016-04-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Max is correct. I used the compressor on the 126 front end rebuild,
discovered that once cranked all the way it would not uncrank, had to go
to the FLAPS and borrow their external compressors to compress it a bit
more then release mine a bit to get it back on the threads then release
the externals to let it connect back to mine. I have no idea why it
does this but learned. I was somewhat fearful while doing that
procedure on the back of my truck in the parking lot.

Since these are relatively old cars, a lot of these chemicals are designed for
newer plastics, so I always test things like this on my cars in a discreet

And whenever doing work on the painted finish, I always start on the passenger

I want to be able to do this in a weekend, so I want to have a minimal
amount of labor involved. Not to mention I don’t want to be grinding or
scraping on the bumper, which could require the use of filler.

There’s little physical damage to the bumper other than a scrape on one
corner that isn’t even into the plastic, so I wouldn’t expect much in the
way of prep once it’s stripped. I have plastic adhesion pray and the
color coat ready to go in spray cans.

I really need to repaint or have repainted the front number on my 140. It has
probably been repainted at some point as well and it's peeling off revealing
the primer.

I don't get why anyone would pay more than a few hundred bucks for a
microwave. These built in models don't seem to work any better than a
countertop plug in, and are ten times the price. I am just putting a

a single dial control on the front. Not even a start button.

[MBZ] Stripping Paint on Bumper

2016-04-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I want to refinish the bumper on the W126. It's obvious that it's been
repainted at some point in the past, and what's on it is pretty thick.

Because the finish is cracked in some places I want to remove it, not just sand
and Bondo. I'm wondering if it's safe to use a chemical stripper on this
plastic, and if so, if anyone has recommendations as to products.

Thanks,
