Yes! The wonders of the push and pray software! Your masters say you
can't start a car unless you push the brake.
Your masters tried to save you from death by Push and pray by keeping
you from starting the car because you failed to DO as required.

The programmers code:
1. I don't care if you don't like it (You WILL do as I say!)
2. I don't care if it is hard/inconvenient/etc. to use
3.If I learn a new trick, it WILL be used in the current
project, even it it makes the project 10 or 50 times larger than what is
needed.
4.If I tell you you HAVE to do this, you WILL do it, or else
the program will not work.

You will perform as you are told, or you WILL walk Push and pray!

2016-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Really? I bet theres a setting for that. My mother has a Cherokee similar to
the one you had although yours was a Trailhawk which is an upgrade model. Hers
doesn't shut off at stoplights...
BTW my mother's Cherokee is a surprisingly good offroader. We took it up the
worst trail at camp which is littered with springs and gets real soupy. The
trick is to let the traction control do its thing and just keep slogging, it
finds traction and just keeps going. I just talked to my folks and dad says
they've ripped a bunch of the plastic off the bottom but it hasn't gotten stuck
and its been very wet up there.

I read a report years ago about K outfitting the big trucks in an open
pit mine with their filters. The mine threw them out after having to
rebuild most of the engines due to cylinder wear from all the dirt that was
getting in.

[MBZ] OT: Jeep Renegade

2016-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I was going to write a review about the Jeep Renegade I've got as a rental this
week. I picked it (National lets you pick your car) because my Dad's Jeep
Liberty needs replacing and the Renegade is at the top of his short list.
Short review: its fine, as good as the Liberty, maybe a little more
comfortable, got 26+mpg from LAX to Burbank in heavy traffic. Has that stupid
deal where the first 1/2 of pedal travel is 80% of throttle control, I hate
that. Typical sloppy rental car transmission, I hope the "real" versions are
better. Overall about as quick as my Jetta.
The funny part of the tale is when I got halfway to the hotel and realized I
didn't know where the "key" was. Its got the push button start that Curley
loves so much so I had just hopped in and pushed the button. Finally thought it
through, when they take the return they throw the "key" on the dash. In this
case it must have rolled back, I found it on the floor where the floor mat
meets the seat. The interior is black as is they "key" so it was impossible to
see, had to feel around for it.

Re: [MBZ] OT (sort of) Chrysler 300

2016-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I think it depends on the model what you get for a trans. I've had them for
rentals and they ALWAYS have horrible transmissions. Used to be a slushy 3spd
but now I think you get a slushy 4spd. Friend had a Charger (basically the same
car) once as a rental that had a v8 and 3spd, the engine was great, the trans
sucked, it took forever to figure out you wanted to go.
My 2010 Dodge RAM has the 5.7l hemi v8 which is a terrific engine. 104,000
miles now with no issues other than somebody butchered the rear wiring harness
to put on the trailer lights but thats before I got it. My Indy got it
straightened out no worries. IIRC it makes around 345hp, hauled Dimitri's
(formerly Dimitri's I guess) 240D 200 odd miles no problem while returning
15mpg in a 4 door 4wd pickup. In a car it'd be a rocket.
Any hoopty made after about 2000 is going to be pretty reliable, anything 10
years old is either junk or has the issues worked out. As with anything look
for records and inspect condition carefully.

Re: [MBZ] 98 Jetta new high

2016-08-28 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thats a Mk III car and it seems like they're designed to rust. They've got
these like 4" round rubber plugs in the underbody. They rust around the edge
and the plug falls out. Water gets into the carpet and accelerates the rust. I
took some thin plastic and glued it over the holes on the inside with RTV. I've
been keeping an eye on them and the holes don't seem to be getting larger.
Unfortunately the rockers were already rusted out when I got the car, I welded
a bunch back in but its getting so the rockers are all patch and no original
metal. Consider the old computer cases I use for patches the patch material is
stronger than the base metal but still...
A friend and I have discussed transplanting a TDI engine into a Suzuki
offroader. Whoever gets a Suzuki first gets to use the engine from my car. He
thought he had one on the line recently so I started looking for replacements.
Found a same-year Passat for $2200, looked mostly rust free, I should have gone
and looked at it...

The used EZL (ignition module) came in yesterday’s mail, but rather than tempt
fate and run out and install it, I waited until this morning.

Swapped out the EZL, fired it up, ran like new.

Score one for the DAS/HHT.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and support.

Now to start looking for another nice W126 or W124 diesel…. (s - don’t let
the W140 hear me say that!)

Yes, the price is high. But, not completely insane. I could see someone
spending $7500-8000 on this. It is in spectacular condition and with service
records, it could be an amazing car. The only 123 diesels I have ever driven
had 345K and 400+K, I wouldn't know what one of these is like with that few
miles. That's only about 2500 miles per year.

2016-08-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
you can include me in the anti-1992 up MB list with Dan and Kleb. I
have deliberately avoided these newer cars.

But I will admit in 7-14 years, or whenever they get cheap, I might be
interested in the Metris (Vito) van as a replacement for Dogde. I
suspect though, that I will probably stick with Dogde.

123 LUST:
Yesterday I had to go ~60 miles to pick up a lathe. On the way, I went
past an auction. On the way back, I stopped to see what was selling.
In the parking rows, I saw a pretty decent (100 yard) 123. It was a
late model 300D and looked pretty well preserved. However some rust was
beginning to show, but still for a 31+ year old car, it looked pretty good.

About 10 yrs ago, I was gonna dump the 240Ds to go with more modern
stuff. But as I thought about it, the plan is to hang out winters in a
warm place, then hang out summers as a Yuper. In either case, other
than the trek from north to south and vice versa (likely made in the van
to haul stuff) the only need for wheels is to drive to town (N) or odd
jobs, or to drive around town(S) with an occasional trip of ~125 mi
R/T. Add to that something that won't depreciate, and something that
can sit in a garage for up to 9 months at a time, and the ironhead
DIesels stand out. The 240D is adequate for a 25 to 75 mile radius, so
it made sense to keep them. The white one is destined for S and the 81
is destined for N. 240Ds are simpler and easier to work on than even a
123 300D. The Quantum also did well sitting for 1-2 years at a time,
then firing up and running all over the country, as did the Escort
Diesel. But Quantums and Escorts are pretty much extinct. That leaves
the 240Ds as "Ideal" for this use.

2016-08-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
I don't remember what year it was, but one I drove at the auction would
roll down the passenger window when you turned right. When I commented
about it after I parked it, they pointed to another one and said "that
one does the same thing!"

so, if it has manual windows, I'd say go fer it, but with electric
windows, I'd at least check with stealer service managers you know.
Electrical problems can be very expensive to fix. (or not)

If you are driving one when it is 20 below and it puts the window down
and you can't get it up, that is a serious problem. Potentially
dangerous if you are 100 miles out of Hays.

Anybody know much about the first few years of the modern Chrysler

saw an ad for a 2005 Chrysler 300C (with the 5.7 hemi) and am

My neighbor who has the farmstand at the end of my driveway goes to the
farmer's market in Columbia a coupla times a week to get stuff that
doesn't/won't grow here (tomatoes are now past here, 2nd crop coming
later, so he's getting them from NC now I think) and picks up peaches
which come from SC orchards, or maybe NC now, so they are fairly fresh
off the trees, and probably get here within 2-3 days of picking. Lately
the peaches have been those big ones, and not entirely ripe, but they
ripen up OK in a coupla days in a paper bag. The first ones this year
were right off the trees in SC and have been wonderful.

Re: [MBZ] Carolina peaches

2016-08-28 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Jaaaja peaches may be ok if you get them tree ripened at the orchard,
but west of the Mississippi, they are garbage. Very few stores even
bother to stock them.

The problem with everything in the grocery store is that it is picked
too green, unless it is a fruit or vegetable that keeps well, like
radishes or carrots.

Peaches are the most delicate fruit to ship, but they can be picked,
packed and shipped with minimal bruising. They can't be stored too
cold. A normal cooler is too cold. The state health dept won't let
you run a cooler at the proper temp for peaches, so they are mishandled
once they get to a store. Generally, the peach needs to be sold within
a week of picking, and the grocery warehouse/distribution systems don't
move that fast.

The MO peaches we get are hauled from the orchards to the store. No
warehouse. The truck comes through once or twice a week, so they stay
fresh, with minimal losses. Most of the MO peaches are grown in the
bootheel, so the trip is about 500 -600 miles. one day's drive, then
they go into store stops for probably 2-3 days. You can get in about 20
store deliveries in a day.

Joisey peaches? You gotta be kidding! no way! not here!

Surprisingly, no one has mentioned Georgia Peaches which are the world
standard for taste and other qualities. Georgia Peach Wine always
takes first prize at wine tastings. Supposedly eating Georgia peaches
is the reason Georgia women are some of the most beautiful in the
world. It's why they are often called "Georgia Peaches".

I'd guess they have different varieties for export/travel to other
locations, and these are most certainly worse than others.

I refuse to purchase peaches anywhere other than my local stand in Chester
NJ. They're outstanding, currently $25 for a half bushel. I'm on my third
box this month.

These peaches will not travel well, however. Even before they're ripe you
have to be careful with them.

NJ is one of the larger peach producing states... We are the garden state,
after all.

I believe they're selling Lorie peach right now, but I could be wrong.

Nowhere near the juiciness and flavor of real strawberries, but they
are tolerable. I wonder who buys the cardboard peaches in the
grocery stores. It has to be people who have never tasted a real peach.

So, Rich and Max: Bah! Your peaches are awful!

If it is any consolation, I won't eat anything called "Cherry" unless
I made it with real fresh tart cherries, or frozen tart cherries.
The sheeple are so stupid that they think cherry tastes like cough

The used EZL (ignition module) came in yesterday’s mail, but rather
than tempt fate and run out and install it, I waited until this morning.

Swapped out the EZL, fired it up, ran like new.

Score one for the DAS/HHT.

Thanks to all who offered suggestions and support.

Now to start looking for another nice W126 or W124 diesel…. (s -
don’t let the W140 hear me say that!)

Surprisingly, no one has mentioned Georgia Peaches which are the world standard
for taste and other qualities. Georgia Peach Wine always takes first prize at
wine tastings. Supposedly eating Georgia peaches is the reason Georgia women
are some of the most beautiful in the world. It's why they are often called
"Georgia Peaches".
