I don't know why, but my 300D with Bundts rides a lot smoother on rough roads
than my 240D with steel wheels. Less unsprung weight on the Bundts?

Funny how crooks wanna keep people from finding out about what they do.

Prevent recordings, etc. ... gov offals keeping private servers,
private foundations, to keep taxpayers in the dark and to route top
secret materials to buddies who are enemies of the country.

Funny how so many state officials think they can just pass a law against
recording them, when ALL the federal courts have repeatedly ruled that
we have a

Right, secured by the First Amendment, to record the public acts of public
officials.

Well we managed to knock him out of his Council Chairman role, and his
political future is dead now (though he did get reelected last week,
given he had no opposition). Daddy was expecting he would be the next
mayor of NChuck, that ain't happening now as the black folks are not
going to allow that to happen. He's pretty much walking dead in that
regard.

Now this stuff with the hospital. And the dirt pit bidness that just
keeps getting dirtier. And more to come very soon on a whole 'nother
aspect of the shadiness going on. And the Gov and Senate Pres now
fully on board after they heard his stupidity. That ain't too
shabby. And his daddy squealing that the law about recordings needs
to be changed and twisting arms of the other fools over there.

He had the stupidity to call up another guy and accuse me of hiring
the black folks, NAACP and NAN, to go raise hell about his racist
behavior. I didn't know whether to laugh or... laugh, it was so
stupid, and yet another insult to them, the boy just cain't keep his
mouth shut. I think it was getting a bit warm for him in that
quarter, actually I know it was as I heard a bunch go off on him
really bad. I had a little chat with the Sheriff a coupla weeks ago
about all this, I am confident the word was received 5X5 that nothing
is going to be tolerated of his foolishness, esp as it relates to my
partner in all this. He introduced me to the local head of the NAACP,
who turned out to be quite pleasant, esp when she found out I had a
bit of a role in getting this ball rolling, and I have heard from a
couple other quarters that the black folks got our backs. It's
amazing how many people can't stand him and are getting tired of all
good ol boy lies and BS.

And more to come on the Council aspect too. dripdripdrip

Uh huh. I'll keep watching...

Timing IS everything, the council would be wise to use the time
between now and the next election cycle to make this matter go so far
away that they'll have some prayer of retaining their offices...

On advice of counsel I respectfully decline to answer the question.

Daddy was at the County Council meeting last night when Diane's
article hit the interwebs. Someone had the courage to show it to
him. I was watching him read it and he was Not A Happy Camper. His
dumbass boy done step in it again, oh my. I delighted in receiving a
stink eye from him. Then someone who has been party to some of the
proceedings associated with the matter walked by and made a passing
reference to it to another fellow staffer, and other staff who were
gathered around had somewhat concerned looks. A certain cute young TV
news reporterette was advised of the matter and was going to dig into
it today.

The Council adjourned to executive session at one point to discuss
this matter and the roads issue, and to have their supper. I did not
yet find out what was discussed there. I did find out at the last
meeting 2 weeks ago, having just posted a little while earlier the
summary judgment in a lawsuit from one of his dirt pit subcontractors,
that discussion of that matter (of which he was unaware to that point)
derailed discussion of a possible lawsuit related to the road issue.
That was comforting and gratifying. One hopes a similar situation
obtained last evening. You see, it really is all about timing, not
that I would know anything about that aspect of the matter.

I made sure to position myself in sight of the principal to this
sh*show, but said nothing. I do like seeing the boy squirm and living
rent-free in his head.

But watch this space for even more piling on. It's only getting
better. On multiple fronts. Mo betta. Oh my it will be good.

NOTE: It was not I who started the fire last month (well, not
directly, but I guess I sorta maybe might have lighted the match for
someone el

2016-11-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Actually you can call 800-DIGSAFE and tell them you are doing some sort
of construction and need to locate a line, they will send a guy out
within a coupla days and it doesn't cost anything. That would be the
easiest and most effective way to do it. They will mark your power,
phone, water, gas, etc. lines if they are buried.

They may be more accurate now, but it also varies with the depth. If

end of a wire used to conduct electricity when that wire is buried in

Only get what you need, the PAG absorbs water like crazy, and with

120 mL in the compressor if I remember correctly.

You do NOT need to vent the system to replace the clutch or coil on
the compressor if it's the same one in the 87 or 88.

Re: [MBZ] OT home wiring / electricity strangeness

2016-11-16 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
Shortly after we moved into our home in 1981 we had a breaker trip and a
lot of the lights went inoperative. Re-setting the breaker did not help
as it just tripped again. I started pulling apart wiring in boxes of
items that did not work as close to the panel as I could determine and
testing to see if the wires leading out were shorted. I had a whole lot
of the house disconnected before I found the problem in one of the 2nd
floor bedrooms. One of the outlets had a wire with some of the
insulation stripped off, probably just from pulling the wires into the
box and I would guess that vibration from people walking around etc
caused the wire to touch the metal box. Taped it up well and have had no
futher issues with that in the time since. I must have been pretty well
to the end of that circuit by the time I found it.

Are you trying to determine what the wire leads to? Or if it is
connected to anything at all? Or just what path it takes under the ground?
Is the end you can see connected to power? Is the line live?
If it is live, I would start with a very basic search for it. I would
turn off the power to it and then look for what does no longer work.
If it is underground and not live, then I would try a metal detector.
The success of that might depend upon how much other stuff is
underground to intefere.

Get Dimitri to sell you the steelies off the '78. Actually if you were really
bold you'd get the alloys. I've got most, if not all, of a set of hubcaps.
They'll want painting but you could get 'em color matched.

Au contraire. Since they predated the bundt wheels, hubcaps are passé and
LESS refined. They also look weird on modern cars such as the W123.

Re: [MBZ] OT but timely

2016-11-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

That is kinda funny.

A guy I know, Lonnie. who collects old Chinese stuff, went there with a
bunch of his (pretty rare) old things. Their "expert" who was there
knew absolutely nothing about any of it, though he was acting like he
did. It was all a show for the show. So Lonnie proceeds to school the
show guy on the stuff, which pissed the "expert" off bigtime, and they
ended up getting in a bit of row over it, and then the show people threw
him out for being disruptive. There was an article about the show in
the paper the next day, which made mention of the incident, which I
immediately knew referenced Lonnie as he had told me he got an invite to
go. So I saved the article and when I saw him he told me all about it
and it was pretty funny. They should have filmed that for the show, it
would have been much more fun. Lonnie hits estate sales and thrift
shops, and finds this stuff that people think are just cheepchinee
tchotchkes, castoffs, and it turns out a lot of it is very rare and
valuable if you know what to look for.

Lonnie is also quite gay and very Suthrun, so, ohmahlawd honey, hearing
his discussion of the whole thing, honey, was hugely entertaining, two
gay guys ("that ignant old queen they had theah!") having a hissy row
over old chinee antique stuff.

On the other note, I am going to hit up Greg for some of his ice cream,
which is to die for. Especially alongside some of his cake. Or cookies.

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I run BioBor shortly after getting each car for the reasons you state. I also
had good luck with the water-wetter the one time I tried it. My '84 190D would
randomly run hot, I never could figure out why but the water wetter seemed to
mitigate the issue somewhat.
The thing about a lubrication additive is that being successful with it doesn't
prove you wouldn't have been successful without it. I've never had an IP or
injector failure. I had the injectors in my '84 190D cleaned and new nozzles
and didn't really see any improvement from it.
I have seen huge improvements with Diesel Purge on neglected engines though,
its kind of magic.

I've used RedLine in my diesels in a response to the change in OTR diesel
formulation from some years ago.  When I had my 82 300SD I used it in every
tank. After nearly 150k, I had the injectors rebuilt. The Bosch diesel tech
that rebuilt them said they were the cleanest injectors he had ever seen, and I
had to show him my service records before he would believe they had 150k+ on
them.

When I was working in San Francisco my employer was a Stanadyne distributor. A
full case of the Stanadyne fuel additive got damaged in the warehouse and was
left sitting out on loading dock. I asked what they planned on doing with it,
and when they said they were going to throw it in the waste oil tank, I asked
if I could have it.  They gave me the whole case...

I also use the RedLine WaterWetter. It definitely makes a difference.

When I first got my W126 I ran some BioBor through it as I knew it hadn't been
run a lot prior to my purchasing it. I waited until I got home to do it just in
case it shook anything loose in the tank. I get my fuel from nearly new gas
stations that turn their stock over at least once a week, so there's really no
need for it now.

Re: [MBZ] OT - rabble rouser

2016-11-16 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

On advice of counsel I respectfully decline to answer the question.

Daddy was at the County Council meeting last night when Diane's article
hit the interwebs. Someone had the courage to show it to him. I was
watching him read it and he was Not A Happy Camper. His dumbass boy done
step in it again, oh my. I delighted in receiving a stink eye from
him. Then someone who has been party to some of the proceedings
associated with the matter walked by and made a passing reference to it
to another fellow staffer, and other staff who were gathered around had
somewhat concerned looks. A certain cute young TV news reporterette was
advised of the matter and was going to dig into it today.

The Council adjourned to executive session at one point to discuss this
matter and the roads issue, and to have their supper. I did not yet
find out what was discussed there. I did find out at the last meeting 2
weeks ago, having just posted a little while earlier the summary
judgment in a lawsuit from one of his dirt pit subcontractors, that
discussion of that matter (of which he was unaware to that point)
derailed discussion of a possible lawsuit related to the road issue.
That was comforting and gratifying. One hopes a similar situation
obtained last evening. You see, it really is all about timing, not that
I would know anything about that aspect of the matter.

I made sure to position myself in sight of the principal to this
sh*show, but said nothing. I do like seeing the boy squirm and living
rent-free in his head.

But watch this space for even more piling on. It's only getting
better. On multiple fronts. Mo betta. Oh my it will be good.

NOTE: It was not I who started the fire last month (well, not directly,
but I guess I sorta maybe might have lighted the match for someone else
to use, and encouraged it) but I take considerable delight in fanning
the flames while the firestarter maintains a bit of a well-earned
respite from firestarting and deals with other pressing issues. Another
part of the effort to keep her calm and renewing her energy for the next
phase. The team carries on and it is just too much fun.

Jim is probably right. Bur if even one good bulb is screwed in you should
read zero. The capacitive coupling voltage is normal with a high impedance
meter but it normally floats around: not constant.

Ceiling light fixture, has three small 15 watt bulbs, two were "out" so I
decided it was time for new bulbs. Touching one of them caused it to light
up, indicating the base contacts are not contacting, so I decided to take
down the fixture and see if I could fix that.

Here's the strange part. I shut off the switch that controls that light
fixture, and double checked with my Fluke to make sure the power is really
off, but the meter shows 14 VAC between the hot and the ground!

What is the cause of this?

Sorry, no. That's a reference to the resident feline, to which I am the

If she (Kitty) had her way, the wife would be further down the scratching

Re: [MBZ] Today's W123 Fun

2016-11-16 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Jon,

Where did you get your Cibie headlamps, and what did they cost, if I might ask?

Fluid filmed? Is this for the undercarriage?

Stanadyne is good stuff, I prefer RedLine Diesel Fuel Catalyst, but I've used
both. After a first dose of one bottle you only need an ounce per tank fill.
It does wonderful things for lubricity and isn't expensive, around
$10-$11/bottle around here, which is 12 tanks of fuel, about a buck a tank. I
can find it on the shelf at PepBoys for that, which is cheaper than buying a
case online.

I love Desert Red, especially with a Palimino interior.

Wrenching on these older cars is far more satisfying than working on the later
stuff. It's simple, things are relatively easy to access and there's no dealing
with electronics, it's all analog. I am really enjoying working on my W123 and
W126, almost daily looking for reasons to tinker rather than avoid like with
the W140s...

Bravo! I love days like that!

There really is nothing quite so enjoyable than wrenching on my W123
and W108. Ive just gotten Karl back from the paint shop after Dimitri
worked some of his welding magic on my right rear quarter panel. I had
the whole car sprayed in a very nice “driver” job (against Dimitri’s
wishes) in the original color “Desert Red.” It looks fantastic. The
car had 2 colors before due to a incident with a motorcycle 25 years
ago on that right rear quarter, and the original paint was so thin you
could see primer in places.

I’ve just installed new Cibie headlamps (kept the original wattage on
the bulbs) and I cannot believe the difference. Today, I’ll replace
the left fog light (corroded reflector) with one I purchased on eBay.
The windshield guy is also coming today to replace the original and
the trunk seal. Yes, I have the MB seals….I learned that lesson a long
time ago. Thank you, Jaime.

Later this week I’ll get the car fluid filmed (in all the right
places). I used to do this, but my friend has a gun and shoots out of
a 5-gallon can with the car on a lift. Painless!!!

Diesel Purge is great stuff. I always fill the new fuel filter with it
because I never think to get diesel in advance of working on the car.

It’s been warm so far this year, but cold is just around the corner. I
am going to prep small bottles of Howes Diesel Conditioner for winter
use. Thinking of switching to Stanadyne after this bottle is exhausted

Happy Wrenching!

Got home from work, took care of some domestic stuff, starting the oil
sucker before I began.

Changed oil (Delo 400 LE 15W40) and installed a Mann oil filter. There
was a spare Mann filter with the car, but when I took it out of the
box and inspected it the bottom rolled edge of the metal part was
rusted or corroded. No way I was putting that into the engine, so my
shelf spare went in. Always good to have a spare!

Removed the air cleaner and found one of the buffers broken. The metal
cups/heat shields were all still there, which was nice to see. I used
one of my $6.00 M119 air cleaner buffers (MB part #1039880111, $6.00
list) that I suspected were the same and it was. It’s possible they’re
slight slightly taller than the W123 part, but that would be the only
difference. Someone had already trimmed the inlet elbow edge off, so
the sealing ring came out easy and was still nice and pliable, so no
need to replace it.

With the air cleaner out, I pulled the banjo bolt on the back of the
intake out and cleaned it. It was pretty clear with just a little bit
of crud in it. This car will stand up on it’s hind legs without hardly
any effort so I’m sure the line isn’t plugged, but I’ll check it this
weekend when I have more time. I also noticed the ALDA is still sealed.

O-ring on the air cleaner drain tube could stand to be replaced - it’s
NLA, but the oil dipstick O-ring is the same size and it’s still
available. Another item for the parts list to call in tomorrow.

Changed the two O-rings on the filter tube (thanks, Curley!) and got
four quarts in through the filter housing. Put the new Mann filter in
and closed things up. Got another two quarts into it to hit the mid
point of the dipstick and all was well.

Cleaned the battery terminals and ground cable. Put some protective
goo on the terminals.

Took it for a quick ride up to Advance Auto to pick up an online order
for some rust neutralizer I had sitting there. Ran great with no problems.

Some observations:

Vacuum levers on the throttle linkage on the top of the valve cover
are nearly worn away. I wonder if they’re still available?

Cigar hose is cracked right near where it connects to the filter
housing. Not leaking, but the hose is pretty hard. Another parts order
item.

Would like to find one of the “flat” one piece breather tubes to
replace the awful conglomeration of tubes, rubber elbows, clamps, etc.
that are in place now. I remember well when MB came out with the one
piece flat rubber tube - it’s still in the EPC but doesn’t appear to
be available any longer.

Spring for holding power steering filter in place is gone. Another
item for the morning’s parts order.

Just got a can of Diesel Purge tonight in UPS. I was going to do a
purge and fuel filters tomorrow, but with the cigar hose in
questionable condition I may wait until I have the new hose.

Rockers are faded. I’m wondering what color paint they were? They
weren’t black, more of a dark gray. Easy/cheap fix and makes it look
much nicer.
