of the tenderloin is called filet mignon, just to give the uninitiated a 
clue.


I made one into pulled bambi BBQ.  WOW! was THAT good!  Way better than 
finger lickin'

cube it or pressure cook it. Unfortunately, it's very lean meat, and most
butchers will throw in handfuls of gamey tasting fat if you ask them to make
burger. I love venison sausage and jerky though, and you can make good burger if
you process it yourself and DO NOT OVERCOOK IT.

But if the foam tube disintegrates, the heat goes flakey too.  And if 
the pbu is going bad, the heat goes flakey too.  So far, we have not 
ruled out anything; nor proven anything is good.


So for the monovalve, unplugged is supposed to give full heat; 12v 
across the pins is supposed to turn off the heat.  Correct?


I did not drive it with the plug off the monovalve.  If I have time 
tomorrow, I will try to drive it, and maybe have a look at the 
diaphragm.  But IF it is working, I hate to disturb it.   At its age, 
disturbing it may break it.  at $50 or $150, I don't want to break it by 
looking at it.  It is at least 10 yrs old, so it not a uroPOS.


I do have a couple of spare PBUs so I can try swapping them and check 
the foam tube/aspirator.


To Jaime's comment; in 45 years, I have never had a cable fail or a 
lever break.  I changed the orings in the 110/111/108 heater valves as 
part of regular service. there is no diagnosis.  They are either good or 
leaking.  If you change the orings every 10 years or so and lube the 
valve, there is never a problem.  Simple.  Clean.  Easy.   You don't 
need a programmed diagnosis to try to figure out the problem.  Oh! one 
time I did have to take out the lever unit and clean and lube it.  (not 
my car) (not sure how/why it got stiff)  One time a cable came loose, 
and I had to find the loose end and secure it.  Simple. Clean. Easy.  No 
programmed diagnosis needed.

inability to quickly respond to plusing on/off from the control unit. Un
plug it, or give it 12V, and it'll (slowly) move to the correct position

Or the tube between the vent on the dash and the temperature sensor and

Sounds like you need a monovalve.  The failure results in water getting
into the tube where the magnet while moves up and down to open and close
the valve.  When water gets in, the valve moves much more slowly or get
stuck temporarily, resulting in very erratic behavior.  Take out the 4
screws, pull out the insert, and have a look at the rubber part that seals
the tube at the bottom, and see if there is any sign of water into the
tube.  A tiny tear in the rubber, or any water inside (possible with no
tear when you have a cheap chinese one), then you need a monovalve repair
kit.

But keep in mind the tear can be very small.

You don't need to drain any coolant to do this, BTW... just release the
pressure at the cap.  Its the highest part of the system so coolant loss
will be nearly nothing.

Its cheap, its easy to replace, and it'll continue to work for many more
years after replacement.  Regarding your desire for 2 valves and a switch:
 cables seize, o rings fail, and switches go bad (I've had all happen in my
240Ds).  So, there is no perfect world.

Driver complains heat is sometimes working and sometimes not.  I have 
avoided this diagnosis before by paying someone to do it.  That guy is 
NLA  (Kicked the bucket)  I unplugged the monovalve, and it appears it 
is delivering full heat.


What is the diagnosis to figure out if the monovalve needs a new insert?

Coolant tank was a little low, but  not dry.  It only took a quart or so 
to fill it up.  I am 95% sure the problem is not lack of coolant flow 
through the heater.


I am guessing either PBU or monovalve, and leaning toward the latter.

How do you test the circulation pump?  get heat going, then unplug the 
circ pump and see if amount of btus goes down?


I still prefer the simple 2 valve and a fan switch for heater control.  
VERY reliable, few failure modes.

 I sent this a few days ago, but it never went out.

 The tailgate on my 85 Wagon is filling with water when it rains. A new
 behavior. Is it usually the window seal, the wiper nozzle seal, the
 wiper
 stalk seal, or the main door gasket? Some water in the footwell of the
 3rd
 seat also.

 I guess the first step is reinstall the glass. The door gasket looks
 good,
 but perhaps I could tighten the latch position a bit.

Yah it doesn't take long to rack up some bills.

Rebuilt head 1300 for the part, plus install.

Transmission rebuild 1700, plus install.

AC stuff: assuming the climate control functions thermostatically, the
center vents need to blow hot air. If not, deduct at least 1500 for
removing and replacing dash.

Turbo rebuild and balance 350 plus install.

All the front suspension ball joints and bushings: lots. Accumulators need
replacing at some point.

Window leaks: several hundred in gaskets and labor.

Sunroof: big dollars if it doesn't work.

Carpet 800 new plus a grand to install it.

Paint.

This is why 8-10k is reasonable. Anyone who has done all this stuff has
that much in repair bills stacked up. I sure do.

The fix is simple. 
Make the car run in low power 'pass the test mode' full time. 
Any engine controls engineer should be able to code that software in a day. 
They just can't do that for the current owners, because then the car wouldn't
have the performance that VW advertised when they bought it.

The horizontal legs on the T antennas that came with stereo receivers were
around 30-31 inches long as best as I can remember, but maybe I'm off a few
inches. 

A quick web search tells me they should be 28.65" when wire end effects are
included in the calculation. 

A simple chunk of twinlead wire, separated for the last 28.7", should do just
fine.

[MBZ] AM/FM antennas

I have my auntieQ Pioneer SX-2500 fired up.  It obviously needs external 
antennas.  If my memory is correct, for AM, all that is needed is a 
single strand wire.  That would be simple enough.


Back in the day, the Pioneer receivers were shipped with a T shaped FM 
antenna that was about 10' tall and about 6' wide made of flat 2 wire tv 
antenna wire.Is flat wire still available or is there a place to buy 
those FM antennas?  Is there a simple way to build your own FM antenna?  
Is the T design necessary?
