for perspective, I think I paid $250 for a very old 4000 Watt genny with
a kohler vergasser, out of a pullman car and thought I had a good deal.
It is much more quiet than modern BS powered gennys. And the old
Kohler engine is solid and rebuildable if it was ever worn out.It is
big enough to run a refer, lights and a radidio in a "linesdown" event.

Re: [MBZ] W115 300D 1976 - neutral safety switch bypass

2017-05-06 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
Dunno about 115, but I think it is pretty much the same as 123. I did
that on 123 by pulling the gearshift surround. On the 115, you may have
to pull the whole console. The switch lives above the trans and in
front of the shifter. With a wiring diagram, you can probably do it
under the hood or under the dash. If you trace the wires from under the
car, thind follow it under the hood, you may be able to jump the wires
in an easier location.

David Bruckmann via Mercedes

Hello everyone,

I've determined that my 300D's neutral safety switch is kaputt.
Wiggling the shifter works OK, but diminishingly so, and yesterday it
took five minutes (at the gas station!) to get the starter to fire.
I'll order a new switch on Monday, but in the meantime I'd like to
bypass it.

I've seen several posts for where the electrical connector is located
for the neutral safety switch on W123 and W126 models, but none for a
W115 300D. Is it in the engine compartment (W126), cabin (W123), or
under the car somewhere?

Having a devil of a time locating any section of any MB manual that
covers this switch; closest I've gotten is a bootleg copy of a 722.3
manual for a G-wagen.

Thanks for any and all tips,

D.

The neutral safety switch CONNECTOR is in the cabin on the W123 model.

The switch itself is on the driver's side of the transmission, mounted on
the shaft that comes out of the inside the transmission and to which the
bellcrank run by the rod to the shift lever is mounted.

[MBZ] W115 300D 1976 - neutral safety switch bypass

2017-05-06 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Hello everyone,

I've determined that my 300D's neutral safety switch is kaputt. Wiggling the
shifter works OK, but diminishingly so, and yesterday it took five minutes (at
the gas station!) to get the starter to fire. I'll order a new switch on
Monday, but in the meantime I'd like to bypass it.

I've seen several posts for where the electrical connector is located for the
neutral safety switch on W123 and W126 models, but none for a W115 300D. Is it
in the engine compartment (W126), cabin (W123), or under the car somewhere?

Having a devil of a time locating any section of any MB manual that covers this
switch; closest I've gotten is a bootleg copy of a 722.3 manual for a G-wagen.

Thanks for any and all tips,

D.

Re: [MBZ] 210 diff

2017-05-06 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well the diff is out of the car. I want to remove the cover to see the damage
but I guess I don't have a set of triple square sockets or whatever they call
it. I need to go ahead and order a new flex disk so hope to finish it next
week.

The socket is e12. It was a whore of a job getting them off. These
things have to be on just right or you will strip it or it flys off
the bolt head. I have several scraped knuckles after this job. They
have lock tight applied to the bolts, so you have to use a long
breaker bar to break them loose and continue loosening them. The axle
boots are in the way of the ratchet causing it to want to slip off the
bolt. You can't use an extension to clear the boots because when you
try to apply all that pressure it wants to come off the bolt. Just now
removed the last of the 12 bolts. 3 more hex bolts and it's out

Especially when it is a euro version. A 107 280SL will outrun the us
versions of the 350, 450, 380, and possibly the 560 in american trim.
Yuro M110 is a hot engine. (for its day) It is not a 2.3 cosworth as
in the 190E 2.3-16, but it is NOT shabby.

A us version 300SEL is not far from a 200D automatic

It was drilled into our heads in the 60s and 70s: the fallicy, "there's
no replacement for displacement" My first foray into German cars showed
me different, and even before that, in HS, a guy had a Fiat Abarth that
caused may stories to be told. That Abarth was what? maybe 1200cc no
more than 1600.

2017-05-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I'm anti-Beetle...
I'm thinking the '98 will last me one more year, its been pretty much rock
solid reliable for the past year and with a little rust repair it should go one
more. During that time I'm going to scout for another '97-'06 to replace it.
There were no TDIs before '97 and after '06 they require the DPF (diesel
particulate filter) so I'm going to hold myself to that range.

[MBZ] 210 diff

2017-05-06 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Well now that the nos diff arrived weeks ago it's time for me to start in on
that job. Been lazy today so far even thought it's a beautiful day out but I am
getting ready to head out to the shop to yank the old diff out of the car. Been
dreading this job not so much the removing it but the fact that I got to swap
the flange from the old one to the new one, which can be a swine of a job to
get the nut loose I have heard.

Re: [MBZ] TDI for Curt and Angie

2017-05-06 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Thats not all that unusual, the are plenty of folks on the TDI forums with
400,000+ miles. TDIs often get lumped in with the older IDI engines which
needed top end work around 250,000 miles. My Jetta has 280,000+ with no engine
problems that I can detect. Sadly the body is rusting away. I may start looking
for another 3rd gen Jetta with a blown engine to transplant mine into.

The timing belt isn't a weak point as long as you change it on schedule with a
quality unit. Sadly people stretch the interval and/or use cheap belts and
munch the heads. Rarely is there any bottom end damage in such a case though so
putting it right isn't all that terrible.
I like the 3rd gen TDI vs the 4th gen (we have both, Angie's '05 Golf is 4th
gen), its a little less refined (the 3rd gen I mean) and rattly but its
lighter, quicker off the line and gets better fuel economy. My car averaged
50mpg all winter...

All the better, as it’s far more likely to find me a nice one.

This is a search for a really nice W124 non-turbo diesel, actually. I’m pretty
sure I’m going to buy it, I just want someone to take a look at it for me
before I send the guy his money and arrange for transport. If I score it you
will be jealous, as it is very nice and I will get it for a Kleb price.

For what it’s worth, I’ve got a call on a nice finnie outside of Medford, OR
scheduled in about an hour. Beautiful car but the seller wants far too much
for it - it’s a 65 190c, probably one of the least desirable models there was.
It’s very nice but grandpa totally hosed up the dash by making a “custom” wood
dash for it. They’ve had it on the market for some time, which is a major tell
relative to the price ($12k!) but I’m willing to give it a shot and see if
they’re flexible.

In the first picture, it looks like there is a low spot about 1/2 exposed
shingle width from the gutter and then the shingle slopes up to the
gutter.

If that's the case, extending the shingles will do no good.

Get a siding guy ro bend a drip edge on the flashing. It looks like you
need 12-14" stuffed up there. THat means you need to pull the nails
from 3 courses of shingles. I doubt you can do that without ruining
shingles. If you can pull soffit and grind off the protruding nails
under the sheeting then put the flashing UNDER the sheeting and then put
plywood or 1 bys underneath to support the who mess, that might work.

Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
May 6, 2017 at 8:33 AM
You know instead of ripping that all out I may try and get some
flashing and insert it up under the shingles along the end he to raise
up the dip and overhang the gutters a bit. I would really like to get
those lead guard gutters and let them do the whole thing, but that is
probably way more than I want to spend.

Yes you want a metal drip edge that goes up under the shingles then
hangs over the fascia that the gutter is attached to. It should be
installed before the shingles are put on. In your case you can slide
some flashing up under the edge of the shingles and either have it hang
over that back edge of the gutter, or bend it down so the water doesn't
run back up under the bottom due to surface tension.

last row along that edge to solve the problem. I have some of the left
over shingles in the garage.

In the first picture, it looks like there is a low spot about 1/2 exposed
shingle width from the gutter and then the shingle slopes up to the
gutter.

If that's the case, extending the shingles will do no good.

2017-05-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My W140s have been pretty bulletproof for the most part. I haven’t had to
touch the 1994 other than maintenance for some months now, and the things that
came up were not unusual or difficult to fix. For example, I had the wiper
delay relay fail on it a few months ago. Got a rebuilt off Amazon for $50 and
sold the core to Programa for $35, so it cost me a net of $15.

The Tommymobile just won’t die. It’s got near 300k on it and it just keeps
running and running.

These are good solid cars if the weak parts like wiring harnesses have been
addressed. My SL500 that has the same running gear has barely been touched
since I bought it 2-1/2 years ago.

There's no drip edge either, which should keep water from going back up
under.

So it appears to me the reason I have rain water running down behind
the gutters on a section of the house is because whoever put the
shingles on did not overhang them off the end of the roof as seen in
the photo. A 2nd photo shows a different section with them hanging
over. Maybe I can just insert a row of shingles up under the end of the
last row along that edge to solve the problem. I have some of the left
over shingles in the garage.

In the first picture, it looks like there is a low spot about 1/2 exposed
shingle width from the gutter and then the shingle slopes up to the
gutter.

If that's the case, extending the shingles will do no good.

The catch: it's a 140, among the first of the electronic nightmare cars.
