If a bus worked for me I'd strongly consider it. I used to drive to the
local airshow/open-house, which was _maddening_ because it closes with a
climax and then they push everybody off the base quickly. I later found
the shuttle bus stop, and switched to using that. Not any faster, really,
but _I_ could look out the window, read, etc.

When I lived in Houston, a very car-centric town, mass transit was viewed in
the same way as liberals were. But where I worked they offered a similar deal,
and parking fees were waived, for a buss pass. I worked with a guy who had
about an hour commute in awful traffic. He decided to try the express bus and
absolutely loved it from the first day. Picked him up close to his home,
dropped him off at the front door to our building, opposite in the afternoon.
He got to work rested, no agita, read the paper and books etc. saved money and
his mental health. All around a great deal.

I’ll drive it to work a couple days a week, I doubt I would go totally public
transportation. There are times I want to run errands at lunch or after work,
so I would drive on those days. I would drive it on the weekends as well.

Just giving it some thought now that the scheduling idiots made some sense out
of the express routes and I discovered that the normally $80/month pass only
costs me $16.00/month.

The routes that previously served my neighborhood used to take over an hour to
get downtown each way. That’s a 30 minute drive at the times I commute. I
would end up being on a bus for nearly three hours a day with their old
routes/stops. Now they’ve pared the route down to two stops, which means they
leave around 6:00 am and drop me downtown around 6:40. I can now leave the
office around 3:40 and be back at the park & ride by 4:30.

I could do that.

None. Down to the minimums. Anything below what is currently in place would
cause the transportation situation to go into criticality.

Our local public transit has finally gotten it’s act together and they are now
running express busses downtown and back from my neighborhood that don’t take
two hours to get home. I’m seriously considering riding them on occasion, as I
can get a monthly pass for $16.00 as a County employee. I have to drive about
a mile to the “park & ride”, but it wouldn’t add significantly to my current
commute time and it would save a boatload on expenses, like gas and tolls. I
pay $3.50/day in round trip tolls alone. I’m getting about 23 mpg out of the
W210 wagon, but if I factor in wear and tear I would be well ahead of the game.

They have wifi on the busses, too. I like the idea of someone else driving.

Hmm.

However, with the drip tube method, you are watching for the drip to stop -
not start, hence the ATDC timing.

It's a .45 cal CVA Kentucky rifle. I'm told it was built from a kit in the '80s
and never shot. I'll post some better pics Monday.
I worked on the trigger some. It's short but very heavy. A little touch with a
450 grit diamond hone helped. There's more to get there but trigger work is
fiddly, do too much and the gun won't not fire...

2017-11-04 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I agree with the assessment that it likely went under the back of a large
truck. Look closely at the leading edge of the trunk lid.. Looks to me like
it opened on impact and over pivoted on the hinges enough to bend the
trunk, forward edge..

I would inspect the car closely before taking it in for bid... Hands on ...
From the pictures I see front fenders and door space compromised..
"perhaps" door mis-alignment... MG was not a "strong car" impact wise..
could be a boat load of hidden damage away from being a nice car.

No, unless you locate a source for the digital encoder they use. I know a guy
that replaces them for something like $60 if you send him the whole faceplate.
I’ll ask him if he can give me the part number and a source.

Got any decent knobs? Looks like they are mistaking them for being gold plated
on eBay and elsewhere. $25 for one of them. Yikes!

I have the part number from Mercedes, but I’m betting they’re NLA. I’ll find
out Monday.

Have you seen any sort of fix for the volume knob issue other that sending it

[MBZ] Fun With Beckers

2017-11-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I really wanted to get the original Becker back in my wagon, so I put a WTB
thread up on Benzworld.

Got a response from a guy in Louisiana who had two of them, condition unknown.
I paid shipping ($15) and he sent me the pair. One was sort of ratty and had a
loose “Seek” button, the other looked pretty nice.

Got the codes from the radio code website in Lithuania and powered both up OK.
The nicer one didn’t want to recognize my CD changer for some reason. The
rattier one did, but it has a really rough volume knob and the typical “turn
the knob and guess where the volume will end up?” issue.

So I started to tinker…

After about 10 minutes of work, I swapped the good faceplate from the nice unit
onto the radio that played nice with the CD changer. I also noticed that the
volume control on this faceplate had been updated with the newer stepper
switch, so it will never develop the volume control issue. I cleaned the tape
mechanism - on this radio it looks as if it’s never been used. Capstans and
rollers were clean, as was the head.

So now I’ve got a fully functional BE 1692 with a CD changer in my 98 E320
wagon. While it doesn’t sound *quite* as nice as the aftermarket head unit
that had a display that looked like Jimi Hendrix threw up on it, it works great
and all the features are functional. I just need to find a new volume knob for
it as both of them were kind of ratty.

One of the least desirable MGs there is.

That car submarined under the bumper of a large car or SUV. That’s what caused
the damage.

Arabian gray with dark blue LEATHER interior and a working s/r.
Droolworthy car, except for the stupid bolts through the rubber strip on

I also wonder about the lack of plates and - apparently - a title. Huh?

The short video with the dark music is quite unusual - goose-bumpy.

I think Dan's correct, low speed submarine crash. All the missing paint is on
the bottom front of the dent where it'd be scraped off in a underbumper

Plus $489 in fees, so if I go there Monday with a cashier's check for $1889
plus 6% tax on $1400, I can leave in half an hour with the MBG.
Or I can bid $1200 on it and see what happens.
I'll admit I didn't look at it closely, but from what I can remember the damage
looked more downward than rearward. I could probably tell for sure if I go back
and open the hood.

2017-11-04 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Looks like they rejected yesterday's high bid and put a buy it now on it.
I looked at it briefly the other day, there's a hole in the vinyl on the
driver's seat bolster and it generally looks a bit tired, but it's rustfree,
the paint's OK, and the top is good. I'm thinking 113k on the odometer given
the wear on the seat. It looks like somebody's garage shelves fell across the
hood and fenders, or maybe a 4x4 pole fell on it.
https://www.copart.com/lot/42465227

Should I buy it, stick it in the garage and fix the dents in the spring?
Immediately throw it on BAT as a project?
Get a wrecked four cylinder Camaro, Mustang or Miata and update the powertrain?
Stand aside and watch somebody else buy it?

I was looking up the specs on these things, 1800cc, 80hp, 2340lb. It looks so
small, I can't believe it weighs 100lb less than a Saab 99 sedan, or 500lb more
than a 1975 Civic hatchback. 19 seconds at 70mph in the 1/4 mile.
