Re: [MBZ] Major disappointment

2018-01-19 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The $50,000 to $60,000 peekups with all the "luxury" trim/interior such
as the frod "platinum" "limited" "SVT Raptor" and "King Ranch" are
what I classify as wussywagons. They are not meant for work, but to
show off the owners wealth or to stroke the owners ego, or to satisfy
the wife while doing one of the former.. The "platinum" is definitely
trimmed to sell to the female market. To be fair, pretty much all cars,
MB included are targeted at the female market. There may be some
argument about the king ranch, but with a price tag over $50,000,
leather steering wheel cover, heated seats, etc, it definitely has
options that fall into the wussy category. Each of these would be
competing with a MB/nissan pickup.

I am not picking on frod, because GM, dodge, toada and nissan all offer
products with similar fru-fru. I am more familiar with their trim levels.

When you compare the $50k-60k wagens to the $27k ford F150 XL, can you
honestly tell me a "limited or "platinum" is worth twice as much
money? Will they get twice as much MPG? Will they last twice as
long? Will they carry twice as much? Do they have some combination of
the 3 that justifies being worth twice as much?

The gummit meddling in the vehicle market has driven people away from
cars and into peekups. The carmakers are not stupid. they are just
capitalizing on the weaknesses of people and what their gummit has
taxed/regulated them into.

What would you consider to not be a wussywagon? A Unimog?
I cannot see myself doing long trips at highway speeds in one of those.

I suggest that the 4WD 1/2 ton crew cab pickups are the best thing
since sliced bread. Basically, a big sedan with a huge trunk. Haul
people and/or loads of lumber etc and pull a trailer behind too if
need be. The biggest disadvantage is parking them.

I don't need 3/4 ton capacity so not much point in hauling the extra
weight around. Would consider a diesel if I needed it and could
justify it but I cannot.

Thermostat might be dead/ open. I took Allen for a drive on the freeway and
temp gauge was sitting between cold and almost not cold anymore (40-80) at

when I got home, the top hose was mushy and warm, the lower hose was pretty
cool.

Time to get a fresh thermostat?

[MBZ] The latest story on the CAB

2018-01-19 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
So I talked to the guy with the 124 CAB today.  It is at the body shop
and the initial estimate was $1800 to fix it.  I guess they got into it
further and the estimate has climbed to $6k.  The insurance company says
the only comparable they can find place it at a $9k value.  So the guy
is not sure what all is going to happen yet but it sounds like he will
be getting a check for the car and wanted to know if I was interested in
it. I told him I was.  He is interested in the 240D.  So anyway, I
figured a couple of things will happen.  It ends up being too much and
they total it, then he can find out what the buy back amount is.  Or
they just give him a check for whatever it would have cost to fix it. He
says he paid about $3500 for it so he hit the jack pot.

Anyway on to the car.  So he says the part under the trunk is pushed in
about an inch and the trunk will not close.  He says the top is leaking
fluid from near the right rear wheel area, so it needs new cylinders.
He says it will need a new top at some point as it is starting to fray.
He talks like the leather seat covers have rips.  I still have not seen
the car yet but I am trying to figure out given the latest info how it
would be worth to mess with it.  I am thinking maybe $1200 depending on
how bad it looks.  If he does want the 240D I am going to try to get his
car plus some cash.

2018-01-19 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
You must have competition in the market. PNW has ONE steel smelter company.
They went on a pillage patrol and bought out most of the yards, or got eco
measures enacted that put the rest out of business. There are a few yards
that are still open, but they are ancient and do very little turn over. If you
need 50 year old car parts… that sort of thing.

Steel company just crushes them flat, then trucks them to the processor for
making small enough parts to fit in a boat to china

Here is your start for this monster machine, 1/4 mile coal burner, tire
shredder...

Plasma cut the bed out, lose the inner fenders, strip the floorboards out,
so it's a lightweight shell, build out a tube frame with full cage... and
have room for a truly monster dual turbo / blower 8V92 Detroit Diesel 2
stroke so you can really "roll coal" and make a show

Cubic speed equals Cubic dollars... have fun two for one price...

Yep, that's undoubtedly the cause. Strange things happen when the weather gets
this cold.
For example, years ago during a similar very cold winter, I bought a CB radio
from a Canadian who had just arrived from Quebec. I plugged it into my
cigarette lighter jack but it wouldn't work. The Canadian said that it would
work but needed a few hours to get acclimated to the Florida climate.

That sounded like nonsense to me, but it was a good brand of CB radio and the
poor guy was sweating with the temperature in the 30s, so I figured he really
needed money and buying his CB would be the neighborly thing to do.

I took it home, plugged it in, and went to bed.
The middle of the night I started dreaming that I was in a French cafe where
everyone was speaking French and I couldn't even order an aperitif.

Finally I woke up and realized that it was the CB. Even the CB talk in Quebec
had frozen up and was just now thawing out.

Here, all scrapped cars go through a giant shredder, the remains then go
through sorting lines that pull out all the different metals and things
like rubber and plastic that can be sold for recycle [max return of
investment].

Sorted scrap, all shredded to pieces a certain size, brings a max dollar
price on the scrap steel market.

So... buy cheap... sell for max dollar... it's a multi-billion dollar
business.

Apparently, this record freeze has been caused by the purchase of to many

We need a federal program to buy back carbon credits so the warehoused

It is coming off the bottom of the injection pump somehow, onto the cross
member. Leaving little puddles everywhere I park. I will have a closer look
this weekend. The lift pump is new but maybe I need to tighten it.

I cannot see myself doing long trips at highway speeds in one of those.

I suggest that the 4WD 1/2 ton crew cab pickups are the best thing since

biggest disadvantage is parking them.

I don't need 3/4 ton capacity so not much point in hauling the extra
weight around. Would consider a diesel if I needed it and could justify
it but I cannot.

Current scrap values are $60/ton by me. It is all shipped to china. If you
want to sell the carcass to a scrap yard, go ahead and strip most of the good
parts you desire. The yard will then just crush it, instead of trying to make
bank off selling parts (PnP).

As a non runner, the most you could get might be $300-500 as a parts car. If
you can find about that much in parts you need for the other car, it is a wash.

My 96 chebby truck has started doing this exact same thing the last week or
two, and some occasional wonky buzzing and lights on the instrument cluster,
and it cuts out when I change the fan speed or put on the wipers (which are
controlled by that same stalk switch).  If the switch is on, and I have tried
to engage it and it won't, it will then try to cut in which also feels like the
engine is missing and it jerks a bit. I'm thinking there is a bad ground or
short somewhere that is leaking electrons and messing with the CC brain or
actuator or something, whatever is in there. That will be fun to chase down
when it warms up a bit.
