[MBZ] FML Tuesday

2018-03-20 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Not really. I am just feeling sorry for myself.

The weight of three old cars has come crashing down on my wallet. The SL is
getting all new injectors, which is a wonderful long term investment. It will
not really increase her value, much. The Europa actually getting signal is
really nice and now she looks really stock and …. pretty. She will want fresh
Bilsteins down the road, a fresh compressor and AC flush, and a fresh soft top.

The SDL is running strong. Biggest issue is the creeping tin worm all over.
An issue for another day.

The SD was just ransomed from the shop. Seems the brakes were toast, but are
not anymore. All new calipers, shoes and pads. Now she really does stop.
There was the issue with a hard start and no manual shut off. Now it will not
be able to run away and blow up. And she has a bit more power.

She also has a fresh set of upper control arms and some other suspension
bushings. I was not aware of the need. I will still need new tie rod ends,
but that will wait until there is fresh rubber on the refinished bundts. I
might as well have an alignment at that point.

This being the first official visit to the indy, there were an assortment of
points I had missed. The AC comperessor seems to be having bearing or other
troubles. It does not kick off, just runs all the time. I did not see that as
trouble, but indy pulled the contacts so the thing does not implode. There is
also a leaky seal at the compressor allowing freon to seep out.

There is no such thing as a cheap Mercedes. We all know that. I am just
chapped at the expense, which is equal to the assortment of available silver
stars I could have picked up instead. Thankfully not enough room at the in to
add more. Though there was a w129 and a few R107 that would be fun to
transplant the OM603 into for about what I spent fixing up the SD.

Really? I'd hate to see what poor shape looks like.

It has the failed hood paint that the '82 240D/3.0 has.

Re: [MBZ] Removing 240D rear Seat Back

2018-03-20 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You'd really have to crush a W123 very badly to rupture the tank since it's
inside the "no crush zone" of the passenger compartment.

This is true of well for earlier models as the floor of the turn folds upward
and the tank itself is in a very strong "box" of frame members.

The tank behind the seat was a big safety thing in those days, and car fires in
Mercedes after collisions are very, very rare.

Re: [MBZ] Lt Don Wonko 240d

2018-03-20 Thread Larry Turner via Mercedes
Way back when in time when I had my '79 240D it had stock GP system
with the big "W" shaped connectors and the OE GPs - everything was very
inefficient.  Plus the GP Relay started acting up and it would turn the
GPs on at random times when driving.  I'd see my headlights go dim for a
few seconds and knew my GPs had just cycled.

I bought a Kit from Rusty with 5 Pencil Type GPs, connecting wires
and a new Relay.  Made a 100% + difference in the way it started.  But
it was the whole package of parts - modern GPs, wiring and most
importantly (IMO) the new Relay.

Max may be right about the connectors being resisters, but they
were such a large diameter I never realized they were resisters.  I
thought the large dia. was to encourage the flow of electrons to the
next GP in line...

After messing with it off and on for 2-3 days if finally roared to

life with a huge puff of diesel smoke. The original loop plugs were
updated to the pencil style with the main power wire coming in and
jumper wires connecting each plug. It just did not seem like the plugs
were getting hot enough to me. With the plugs running it measured 11.x
volts at the plug closest to the firewall and down to 10.x and the
front one. It just doesn’t seem like the plugs are getting enough juice
to me. I have cranked on it till battery ran down several times and it
seemed like maybe 1 cylinder was trying to fire. I ended up just taking
a pair of jumper cables from the battery and hooking it to the

Front plug. After much cranking it finally started. Not really sure

how these loop plug conversions are supposed to work

124 also has the fuel tank in trunk behind the back seat.

Probably about the safest place to put the tank, between rear wheels and
big crush area behind it. A collision severe enough to damage the fuel
tank in that location is likely going to be too severe for any passenger to
survive, so if they are made into crispy critters after the collision, they
probably won't feel it.

If there were bolts in the trunk they would be sticking into the fuel tank.

The only bolts on the rear upper seat cushion in a W123 are the outboard ones
and the center one below the center armrest. Once these are removed you just
have to lift up sharply to disengage the hook along the top of the seat frame.

It gets more weird.

I just took apart the intake.  No signs of popcorn or meeces anywhere.
I have the upper and lower intakes off.  The engine is bare down to the
valley of the casting.  Looking in the intake port of the valve, no
signs of popcorn.  So the plug must have been taken out and popcorn put
