[MBZ] OT: One less diesel

2018-04-01 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
My son was driving, his first long-distance freeway trip. Learner's
permit. My beautiful 1997 dodge diesel pickup, 110kmi on it, is no more.
(Probably.) I _loved_ that truck, and intended to drive it forever. It
was arguably our most valuable vehicle, and was the second newest.
Destroyed by pounding across a 3' ditch coming off the freeway, changing to
highway 18 off of I-90. We're fine. Wheels bent backwards into front
wells, oil pan cracked, etc. Airbag did not go off, we went up in the air
more than stopped. Expect insco to try to screw us, the truck was
immaculate inside. No wear on seats, etc.

Well so much for the official word from spermatex.  Soaked over 12 hours
in isopropyl alcohol.  no softening at all.  The $hit is bad on cast
iron, but at least on iron you can take a wire wheel to it.  On aluminum
it is pure awful.

I didn't think of anti-graffiti laws, but some places do have controls on spray
paint sales.

As far as federal law is concerned, pressurized spray cans are ORM-D materials,
OK for ground shipping but not to be placed on aircraft. The box should be
clearly labeled so that Fedex or USPS doesn't decide to use them to fill up an
airplane's cargo hold.

MEK was essentially outlawed in the 80s. MEKP is as close as you can
get now, AFIK. It works to make bonds in acrylic plastic sheet.

If you have access to chem stores at a major research U, you might be
able to get some. However the one I used to get stuff from changed
policy. there are no cash sales. Stuff only can be purchased on a U
account, and those are heavily audited. Even glass/plastic wares.

Curt Raymond via Mercedes
April 1, 2018 at 5:36 PM
I haven't been able to get real MEK. I had a Por15 tank seal gone
wrong which can supposedly be dissolved with MEK. It can't be
dissolved with "MEK substitute"...

I used airplane stripper to get down to bare metal. It is a huge PITA,
as it needs to be kept covered long enough for the product to work.

Do not sand blast. A person could soda blast it or bead/walnut.

Now, the biggest removal need I have is getting brake debris/dust to
go away. Brass wheel can do a great job scuffing through that. Then
work up the abrasive paper tree to 400 grit.

Some of us think the command line _is_ user friendly and the GUI

And yes, Linux become easier. There are hundreds of
distributions. Each thinks it is the best for some particular
reason or purpose. There are a lot of even system work that can
be done in a GUI - however, so far as I have seen, the command

[MBZ] Coupe is sold

2018-04-01 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
First guy that called and came look at it bought it. I broke even but thank god
I’m out of that car. The minority fellow I bought it off of got one over on me
good. I was off my game that day. The trunk lid had the bolts missing on the
passenger side by where the tree fell on the back glass. I just thought they
probably removed them for whatever reason for the back glass deal. I installed
them yesterday and the trunk lid does not line up on the right side. It’s
pushed back about half an inch or less. It appears to me it’s because the hinge
on that side probably got bent out in the tree incident. As I was giving the
guy the Texas title that the guy gave me that he got from the guy he bought it
off of who’s name is on the title signed the front but not the back. On Texas
titles the owner signs the front then signs the back when sold. So basically
the car did not have a valid title. Crap. I missed that. Rookie move in my
part. The guy buying the car said he could handle it. Good deal. Anyway, he is
a foreigner of some sort who just moved here for his company. Whatever, I
didn’t ask question. He paid, I gave him the title. He wants to leave it here
for about 3 weeks until he has room. I offered to haul it to Tulsa for him.
That car just seemed like a turd, but a clean turd. I don’t know I was just
turned off by that car.

Do not sand blast. A person could soda blast it or bead/walnut.

Now, the biggest removal need I have is getting brake debris/dust to go away.
Brass wheel can do a great job scuffing through that. Then work up the
abrasive paper tree to 400 grit.

Wife used WD-40 to get labels off, and I seem to remember using it to get a
paper gasket off. I would try whatever spray solvents I had on hand; Blaster,
Aerokroil, brake cleaner, etc.

Re: [MBZ] Inner door liner

2018-04-01 Thread archer75--- via Mercedes
Walmart carries an 8 oz bottle of Elmers Rubber Cement, but you often have to
hunt for it. Sometimes it will be in the school section, sometimes in the art
supply section, and sometimes in the office supply section. I just bought a
bottle and it was in art supplies.
