I thought the challenge was still open

Clue: When you pull the rope, the knot releases completely and your rope
slips out of the tail wheel cleanly... as long as the aircraft pulls on the
knot... it only gets tighter, can't slip.

I'm not sure I can do a verbal picture with any success.

Good to know…

I gave it a try at full strength on the 400E wheels and I will say that it
removed a considerable amount of crud. That being said, I also noticed the
finish was coming off in those same areas, but that could very well be a result
of the crud having been there for an extended period of time and the finish
below it being compromised.

It didn’t seem to affect the rest of the finish, so I’m betting that’s the case.

There was still some wheel dust residue in a few places, but for the most of it
the stuff did seem to do the job. I’ll continue to use and monitor it and
report back if I find anything amiss.

My last Hawaii trip in January had me awakened the first morning I was there

Lots of fissures and shaking, but time will tell what more she may do.

Pretty close. Execute that system using only rope, without any eyes on the
end, or steel rings and you have the principle nailed down.

Good job finding the video, thanks. I notice it's grouped with a couple
other videos of folks with "remote tail wheel tie down release".

It's an old problem. How do you self prop the airplane [before batteries
and electric starters] and not kill yourself or lose the airplane. Long
forgotten skills... likely only even remembered by old guys [like myself]...

[MBZ] Coolant tanks

2018-05-20 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin via Mercedes
What is the deal with coolant tanks?  I have started looking for parts
for this SDL I picked up and want to replace the coolant tank on it
since this one is cruddy and you can't see the level in the tank.  I
also want to replace the one on my 95 E300.  I thought these were
cheap?  I can't find them for either car on any of the normal sites, but
found the SDL one for about $150 on the online dealer part sites.  I
guess these are not available aftermarket?  I see cheap ones for gassers.

There was a big debate on peach parts about this, some claim the 124 gasser
coolant tank will work just fine in the 124 diesel cars.

Take the tank from your cabriolet, try it in the SDL. Side benefit: no one

Re: [MBZ] OT: Trucks

2018-05-20 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Still waiting on a buy-back valuation, but in other news the transmission
seems to be fixed.
Spontaneously Friday, on two of the four legs that day, the transmission
worked perfectly.
(Bad, Good, Good, Bad.) Well, that just _screams_ electrical to me, so
Saturday I went
through all the external electrics, pulling relays, etc. I cleaned the
contacts _inside_ the
associated relay, and cleaned the external blades. I used De-Ox-It on all
contacts, internal
and external. (I had already done the engine/transmission computer's
connectors.) I then
re-pulled the tranny connector and used brake cleaner on it again, making
sure to get a
bunch puddled into the upward-facing socket. I then used compressed air to
blow it out.
Not sure whether it was on top, or inside the socket, but I could fee/hear
small chunks blow
around there. I did that twice, then used De-Ox-It on the connector, and
plugged it back in.
I think it seated further than before, with a positive 'snick', which I
don't remember from before.

Subsequent to that, all trips have been with a perfectly functioning
transmission. Engine
RPM's are now low on the freeway, about 1,500 RPM at 55-ish. You can feel
all four shifts,
counting the one where the torque converter lockup engages. Nice. Maybe
the next tank
will turn in better than the first one, which was 10.8 MPG. Hey, at least
it made it into double
digits, which I wasn't really expecting. V10's are thirsty beasts.

The bearing noise, though, is _not_ a good sign, and is enough to help keep
me from feeling
too guilty at the prospect of slaughtering this truck for parts to get mine
going again.
What I really needed was a rollover, one that did not damage the
mechanicals, but I doubt
that one of those would have been any cheaper than the $1,450 that this one
cost me.
($2,140 ready to drive.)
