Mr. Noble would be on the hook for pallet and crating on his end. UPS would
build the crate for shipping in their freight program. Again, probably worth
it, depending on purchase price.

This assumes the motor provided is in good nick. I would be VERY liberal in
that standard for a decent OM617 turbo. Even Mr. Kaleb ought to be able to
scrounge something in his Acres of Okie Excess.

Home Depot would have a pick up for around $25 a pop.

I assume the terminal would have forklift to drop it into the bed of the pick
up.

$80 for a liftgate would not kill the deal and probably a sound enough
investment in time savings and “accidents” moving it to and from a pick up and
to the shop.

$20 will get you a u-haul truck to get the engine at the terminal and
deliver to the shop. Deducting a liftgate stop is probably $100 off.
$80 net savings.

Now you need to find what Rick can do on his end.

I've had good luck shipping engines on a pallet with a crate enclosing
them. I lay the engine on it's side if it's an inline engine, blocks cut to
support it and keep critical parts from contact. then screw 2X4's around
the pallet outline, screw plywood to the 2X4's to make a box, reinforce
corners with short 2X4, make a lid of plywood, screw it on...

Laying engine down makes smaller box, lowers shipping cost. Pallet base
lets it be moved and loaded by freight company easily.

Hint... use or build a strong pallet for base. Strap the engine down
hard.. Put a "Do not stack" sticker on the top.

Depends on purchase price. Should be able to ship to the shop on a pallet for
around $500. OM 617 turbo, not aspirated.

UPS freight will come over and crate it up, then send it to my indy for us.
Crated it becomes class 70, cheaper. On a pallet, skid it is class 85, more
dollars. It would need to be fully drained of fluids and have a goodly diaper
in case anything drips. The engine would want to be supported on the mounts,
not the oil pan. Some advice was to build up something to bolt the engine
down, as well as strap the heck out of it.

I may not have really thought this through, as a few responses have pointed out.

The 602 or 603 would require a significant outlay of time and cash to modify to
fit.

I have been driving the SDL which has a great engine, but crapped out sheet
metal. There is rust in all the normal spaces, as well as pretty much the
rest. The interior of the SDL is pretty dolled up in its polizei green and a
decent dash with working Becker. Maybe I get another year or two out of it.
It will need a fresh set of doors, hood, trunk, and some fenders. Big rot
under the battery tray, and the left rear wheel well is cancerous from front to
back to the bumper mounts.

Waytago!   Did you find the tcm on fleabay.de, or some other way.

My long-awaited transmission control module, from Germany, arrived yesterday,

driver.
The few TCM's I could find in the states were either new/rebuilt, or too
expensive.
This used one from Germany cost me $48, shipping was more than half.

Total monetary investment so far is about $900, but it has not yet been taxed

2018-12-12 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
Thanks Max. I found the leak and hopefully patched it up. It was behind the
front fender about midway from top to bottom and about a foot forward of the
parking brake. I could just reach it from inside the car and with the fender
bolts off I could patch it from the outside as well. It was about The size of a
silver dollar. (The old ones) We will see if I fixed it next time I go out in
the rain and snow.

[MBZ] OT: Don't mess with moose(s)/meese

2018-12-12 Thread Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes
WILDLIFEAlaskan gets $100K fine, jail time for poaching 3 moosePublished:
Wednesday, December 12, 2018

An Alaska man who poached three moose and left most of the meat to rot has
been sentenced to nine months in jail and fined more than $100,000.

Rusty Counts, 39, of Anchor Point shot the moose near his community over
two weeks in September. He pleaded guilty Nov. 6 to 21 misdemeanor wildlife
counts and violations, including wanton waste, exceeding bag limits and
contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Hunting regulations near the Kenai Peninsula community require moose to
have antlers measuring 50 inches wide to be harvested. None of the three
moose had the required spread, said Aaron Peterson, an assistant attorney
general who prosecuted the case.

"The working theory is that he realized they were sublegal and decided not
to stick around to salvage the meat," Peterson said Monday. He called the
case one of the most egregious poaching events ever seen by Alaska state
wildlife troopers.

Alaska officials take seriously the harvesting of moose and salvaging of
meat, Alaska Department of Fish and Game spokesman Ken Marsh said.

A bull moose can weigh up to 1,600 pounds and feed a family for months with
meat free of chemicals and hormones. A successful hunt is also a source of
pride, Marsh said.

"It's a really important part of our culture and tradition, and people take
that seriously," he said.

Peterson backed the hefty penalties for Counts as a deterrent to others. If
Counts had salvaged meat from the first moose, he likely would have been
penalized for a single hunting violation.

"That meat goes to shelters, food banks. It goes to people who need it,"
Peterson said.

Counts was fined $97,650 and ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution. He
forfeited his rifle and an all-terrain vehicle and was sentenced to 270
days in jail.

"If you do the right thing in the field, this kind of thing doesn't happen.
But if you poach and leave moose, these are the appropriate sanctions, in
the state's view," Peterson said. *— Dan Joling, Associated Press*

The driver drain location should be symmetrical with passenger side; try
pushing your line through passenger side to detect exit point.

On a 124 car, the drain lines are black, rubber hose-like but with very
thin wall, and were easy to see once my piece of weed wacker line pushed
through. I melted the end of the weed wacker line so it made a little ball
to make it easier to push through.

2018-12-12 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
4JGAB57E93A406169

Wondering when the dealer put these starmarked NGK plugs in the ML.
They've obviously been in there a LOOONG time.
I doubt the car has seen a dealer since it came to Michigan.

The first one I pulled out was hard to turn for the first few turns, quite
rusty, and the gap was eroded to 0.80". The next one wasn't as hard to turn,
but still stuck in there, and had major metal transfer from the center
electrode to the ground. When I get home tonight I'll try to take off the coils
and pull the other ten plugs.

BTW, a long 17mm open end wrench makes a nice prybar to yank the plug boots
off.
Just slip the wrench over the metal boot and give it a bump with your fist.

Mitch.

[MBZ] Hepl! 85 W123 sun roof drains

2018-12-12 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I’m trying to locate the source of a water leak into the drivers side footwell.
Carpet is getting soaked on the left side below and forward of the emergency
brake pedal.
I pushed a line from the forward sunroof drain and it popped out right in front
of the upper door hinge.
Is this the normal exit for this drain or is it a rusted out hole?

I can’t see the actual exit because the hinge is blocking my view.

Cockaroach in a hawaiian term for disappeared or stolen.   Since spanish
is our national language now, I translated it.

"someone cockaroach my knife!"

Is that to say, "thrown out"?

G63 wheels are expensive.
Looks like the spare and the left rear are probably good.

Re: [MBZ] Tossing an OM602 into a W126?

2018-12-12 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
I'm just guessing here, but seems like wiring and motor mounts from an SDL
would work.
Or adapt the 300D engine harness if it's been updated from biodegradeable.
Might have to move the transmission mount and modify the driveshaft. Maybe get
an SDL driveshaft and cut it down?

The inspectors frown upon carbon steel knifes in commercial use.
At least they did a couple decades ago when I worked in a
kitchen. There my favorite knife was the Wusthof Trident chef
knife. I wanted one for myself, but couldn't afford 'em. Finally
a couple years ago I got a Mercer.

Either my memory is soft, or this Mercer is every bit as good as
the Wusthof! The other users in the kitchen were skeptical of the
value - but I'd have a riot if I were to try to take it away!
