[MBZ] OT: Groomer shenanigans

2019-01-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Big storm on the way so day 2 of making sure the groomers are ready. Our
fearless leader is actually on a snowmobiling trip to Idaho so today Ben and I
went over to look at his
Tucker:https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4887/45890552655_1ce5305457_b.jpg
A Tucker is a weird machine, I've heard it called "Farm Equipment with
delusions of grandure." Its basically a 1ton truck with two rear axles and a
cab over on tracks. The front axle pivots to steer. The blade on the front is 4
way, up, down and twist which is to say you can lift either end. You don't plow
a whole lot with a Tucker because there is one big tie-rod that steers it and
if you break the tie-rod end you're hooped...Power is a Cummins 4BT, I think
this one is rated at 135hp, ours is an '89 and is clapped out. Nobody has taken
care of it even to the minimal level that Ben and I take care of the Pisten
Bully and ASV.
Anyway it fired up pretty readily at 30F, the key is broken off in the lock,
you start it with the stub, so hinky.  The hydraulics all work but drive Ben
crazy since they're backwards, the front set of controls run the drag, the rear
the blade. The Pisten Bully is the other way around. The ASV controls are all
in a row so they both drive me crazy.
The accelerator pedal was sticky like the ASV was yesterday so I went back
later to lube it up. At FLAPS I found a can of Fluid Film which claims to be
"Penetrant, lubricant, protectant" and it was the cheapest magic goop they had
so I grabbed it. The pedal free'd up pretty easily and now smells vaugely of
sheep...

There’s context here if you know the area….

Gibsonton is a census designated town in Hillsborough County that has the only
exceptions to County ordinances about storing equipment on your property as
well as housing non-agricultural livestock/animals.

It is the winter home of what used to be circuses and carnys. Most lots are in
excess of an acre, and this time of year they’re jammed with trailers full of
carnival rides and food trucks/trailers. Some of the residents have circus
animals, there used to be some elephants in the past.

Done, works. A small victory, and now we know that 124 locks are very
serviceable. There were several wafers that proud of the tumbler, worked
from highest to lowest, retrying with each wafer, until it finally worked.
Still a little notchy, if I have to take it apart again I just may try to
source some new wafers.

Some of the wafers were whole, like the 201 wafers in the link, but some
were split in half, so each half could be differently keyed (different
number wafer). Not sure what that is all about, maybe the valet key has
some difference that takes advantage of that.

Re: [MBZ] Mrs. Ophelia has a clean title

2019-01-19 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Looks like Labrador Blue

312O from 1978 LABRADOR BLUE
312U from 01.01.1982 to 31.12.1984 LABRADOR BLUE

Car was built 11/82

So I looked at the car.  Body has rust along the side trim strips.  Rear
bumper is under the car, LR is up against a tree. Body in reasonable
condition except for the rust in the strips, no significant dings.
Interior sorta damp and moldy but not too bad considering how long it
has sat, seats in very good condition. Would probably clean up fairly
well.  All the wood trim is shot from the damp.  Looks like all of it is
there, has the blue hubcaps inside, they looked nice.

It is a manny tranny, clutch was seized so couldn't check that aspect
out, but the shifter shifted well enough.

Under hood fairly clean considering it has sat for some time.  I took a
battery and put it in but the old lady never showed up with a key so
could not try to start it.  Engine oil was about halfway up the
dipstick, but it looked "clean" for black diesel oil.  No water or
anything anyway.

I offered the guy $300 as it sat, he said he had a coupla other lookers
but would let me know.  Guy was a neighbor to the old lady, had owned a
coupla diesels and ran them on veggie oil, so he had some familiarity
with the cars.  he agreed it was not worth a lot as it sat but wanted to
see if he could get a bit more for it, I told him to let me know.

I suppose it would be worth fooling with at $300 or $400 if it will spin
and/or start, but would need a lot of TLC to get back on the road --
brakes, tires, clutch, hoses, etc.  Nothing too exotic I suppose, but it
would be a project.

I'll see what the guy says.

Re: [MBZ] 124 Door lock re-key

2019-01-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Curt for your input, I'm getting there slowly but surely.

201 lock is different from 124 lock. After I looked at it and thought
about it a bit, it struck me that MB would not design a lock that can only
be assembled but not easily taken apart, and so the two blind pins were not
the place to start but the single pin on the tang. Removed that single
pin, tang came off, and sure enough the tumbler was able to come out.

That was a few hours ago now.

I have carefully taken the tumbler out, removed all the wafers and springs,
recording a map with the wafer numbers as I go. Cleaned the tumbler and
the cylinder with brake cleaner then compressed air. Using an old t-shirt
and Boeshield T9 as cleaner / lube I cleaned up each wafter and some of the
springs. Managed to break the end off one spring - not good, but I think
the remaining piece may do the trick.

I'm in the process of putting it back together, stopping for lunch now.

2019-01-19 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A blind hole is one with only one opening. He suggests you just have to drive
out a couple roll pins, doesn't sound like that big a deal.
Those work almost exactly the same as the side cut key locks, take all the
little wafers out making sure you keep them in order, clean each hole with
whatever it takes, a needle file will probably help. Clean each wafer until it
shines. Reassemble with plenty of lube, I didn't find Houdini to work well for
that, I like just dry graphite but you might have to use something else if you
have an alarm.
Once you've got it all clean and reassembled if it doesn't work well you can
use a file and sandpaper to shave down the outside of the wafers to get a
perfect fit. Make sure you test with multiple keys, its easy to get a lock
working with an old key so it won't with a new one.

Easy peasy, takes me longer to get the tools out than to pop that lock /

Washed it out well with brake cleaner, then with Houdini Lock Lube, no change.
Lots of black juice ran out, I kept going until it was fairly clear, but nope.
It looks like there is a pin at the end of the assembly that can be removed,
which then allows a piece and a spring and then a cir-clip to come off, and
then just maybe the tumbler will come out of its housing.  There are two more
pins inserted into blind holes, I guess I'd have to grind the housing off on
the blind side to be able to drive those out, but I'm not sure what that would
gain me unless my first guess about removing the tumbler is wrong.

I don't know why both wouldn't work. Locks are pretty simple devices. I have
an idea how the side cut locks work I've just never opened one up.
In retrospect before I junked the '85 190D I should have pulled the locks out...

Re: [MBZ] 124 Door lock re-key

2019-01-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
FSM Procedure 72-240: Well the lock / tumbler assembly is very easy to get
out of the door: on the back edge of the door, remove cover over little
hole, insert 3mm hex and turn out (CCW) hex screw four turns. Insert key,
turn to unlock (CW) direction, push lock / tumbler toward rear of car and
pull out. Easy peasy, takes me longer to get the tools out than to pop
that lock / tumbler out.

Washed it out well with brake cleaner, then with Houdini Lock Lube, no
change. Lots of black juice ran out, I kept going until it was fairly
clear, but nope.

It looks like there is a pin at the end of the assembly that can be
removed, which then allows a piece and a spring and then a cir-clip to come
off, and then just maybe the tumbler will come out of its housing. There
are two more pins inserted into blind holes, I guess I'd have to grind the
housing off on the blind side to be able to drive those out, but I'm not
sure what that would gain me unless my first guess about removing the
tumbler is wrong.

Here's a clue:  The IRS employees love to kick us when we're down.

The TRUTH came out this time:  This is the FIRST time any of them ever
