2019-01-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
This guy had been a SEAL and showed an aptitude for languages so they trained
him in Russkie and then he got into all this other crazy business. He was
pretty smart but most likely completely amoral, so he had that going for him
too. His wife said he would just up and disappear for various periods, weeks,
months, and she generally expected him to show up again at some point, which he
would with no notice. She seemed to tolerate it fairly well until she didn’t,
which seemed to coincide with him being posted locally doing g-d knows what.

Offer nothing, the car is not even parts quality. From the looks of it, the
car has been sitting in that spot for many many years. Sun damage to the seats
speaks of decades. Motor is shot, transmission shot, must smell something
awful inside.

It it were a r113, maybe worth putting cash into restoring. Not on a 380.

Yeah, I think he was some sort of naval attaché. All I know is that I worked
around a bunch of people like this over the years, and once you get to know
them you can pick them out. His wife got pissed at me one time because I
referred to him as a “spook”, like I was blowing his cover.

He was a nice guy, though. A car person, and although he was into domestic
muscle cars I forgave him. We used to tinker together on occasion - he had a
late 60s Malibu, I believe. Became a daily driver for the teenage son after Dad

Re: [MBZ] Turkish Castles - Cheep!

2019-01-23 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I was there for work in the southern UN zone with the Brits.

Had a former neighbor who was a spook that “allegedly” committed suicide while
on assignment there in the early 2000s with the State Department. I say
allegedly because:

1.) He was a spook (Naval officer assigned to State Department, embassy work)
2.) He drove (alone) to the northern buffer zone near Nicosia (off limits to US
personnel big time)
3.) His car was parked on the side of a mountainous road with no signs of
trouble
4.) He allegedly jumped off a cliff that was several hundred feet high

No note, no warning, no personal belongings left behind. No investigation.
Short blurb in the local (Cypriot) paper a few days after. Body was never
returned to the family, either, yet there was an autopsy, the results of which
were classified.

Family was a good Navy family and didn’t ask any questions. Sucked because he
had two teenage kids. Really screwed up the son. The whole thing was really
messed up if you ask me.

Re: [MBZ] W124 casualty?

2019-01-23 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
You need to have the front of the frame verified for straightness. If you just
tore out the upper shock mount, that's easy to fix. If you bent the inner
fender or distorted the upper shock mount, it will take a frame machine to get
it right.

Likely the inner fender is crushed too, and the insurance will total it -- my
brother had to cut pieces out and weld in new to fix my nieces when it got hit
in the front corner.

Fix the upper shock mount and get it to a good body shop, they know what to
look for. If it drives funny with a new upper shock mount, the "frame" is bent.

[MBZ] W124 casualty?

2019-01-23 Thread Dimitri via Mercedes
A woman crashed into my brother’s ‘89 300TD today. She hit the driver’s front
fender and wheel. The fender is toast as is turn signal assembly. The shock
popped out of the top of shock tower and the wheel seems a bit off.

The body work is fairly minimal- new fender etc. but we are concerned about
front end damage. Any thoughts? What could have been damaged beyond mount for
shock?LCA?

Re: [MBZ] 1991 350sdl

2019-01-23 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
 Patrick,
I've spent most of my adult life troubleshooting things and the #1 piece of
advice I can give you is to stop making any assumptions. You've already assumed
you know there isn't a drain (you don't) and that we don't know what we're
talking about (I didn't know about the glow plug fuse). If you keep making
assumptions like that you won't bother to troubleshoot things and will miss an
obvious problem. You must approach troubleshooting with an attitude of "I know
nothing".

So the first step is to pull the negative battery cable, charge the battery,
then put a test light between the battery and the negative cable. If the light
is on you have parasitic draw. Until you've proven that you know nothing.

There is no other electrical Gizmo draining the battery because car will

2019-01-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I have not been following this thread closely, but I seem to recall early
work on this car was an alternator replacement by a mechanic who was pretty
sloppy in his work, ie, failed to replace the drive belt which was visually
damaged to the point it should have been replaced.

My posit is: The "bad mechanic" either damaged the alternator, or damaged
the alternator wire, or wire connection plug, in such a way it is not
properly functioning. My vote would go to wire or connection damage by a
ham fisted mechanic who didn't understand Mercedes.

It’s really not as complicated as people make it out to be, imo.
There’s plenty of trouble shooting tips on the forums online. One
big thing is that the springs are supposed to do the work at ride

loads. If it rides super stiff/like it’s on bouncy balls, an
accumulator or two are bad. It’s like $140 for the pair. The SLS

Doesn't look too bad, but the 100A maximum current means you won't be able to
read starter current. Looks like it would do everything else, though. My
Fluke (more $$$)
reads to 400A.

This one would allow you to, in seconds, determine if an alternator was
charging,
whether a glow plug was bad or out of spec., whether or not there were any
parasitic
loads on the battery, etc.
