Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1992 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel
ok, What Herr Mann says is true. But from a practical standpoint, I think there is evidence the VO or WVO was only run enough to plug the filters. Therefore, I am not afraid of this car or this engine. Based on my experience resurrecting one mutilated 124 300D. Herr Mann also frequents parts of the country where clean rust free examples of 123s, 124s and 126s are relatively plentiful. In some other parts of the country, a clean rust free example is hard to come by, so we are willing to make compromises. But do print out Herr Mann's email and take it along to have the seller read. Use that to negotiate a better price. As I said, it is all true. G Mann via Mercedes wrote on 2/9/19 10:05 PM: Run Run... Run... In the alternate fuel world, there is a lot of confusion between running "waste veg oil" which is contaminated used cooking oil, and Schedule 52 Bio Diesel. Waste Veg Oil is NOT Bio Diesel. WVO [as it's called] has multiple sins that does damage to the injection pump and injectors, as well as valves and pistons. To run on WVO, the WVO MUST be cleaned, ALL water removed, and contaminate particles from cooking removed, PLUS, cooking inserts acids into the WVO which do extreme harm to engine and IP internals. Further, to successfully run CLEANED WVO, it must be pre-heated to 180 F and engine start and shutdown MUST be done on clean pump diesel. Engine must be brought to operating temperature BEFORE WVO is switched to the IP. Then, pre-shutdown, you must switch back to pump diesel and run long enough to purge ALL WVO from fuel pump, lines, IP, and injectors [rule of thumb here is 8 miles of running]. True Certified BioDiesel which meets Schedule 52 requirements requires no modification to fuel system, engine, or proceedure of operation. The only major consideration is that Schedule 52 BioDiesel has a higher gell point than Schedule 54 pump diesel, So, if you operate in cold climate, you may want to not run BioDiesel in temps below gell point. If the car has had WVO used, expect accelerated wear on the IP, Injectors, and massive carbon on valves and combustion chambers. His stated problem with fuel filters tells me, "Problems are already there." Hope this helps... ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: 1992 Mercedes Benz 300D Turbo Diesel
If it really has only 90k to 100k verified by records, my GUESS is that you'd be ok. Likely the moron only ran enough sludge (VO or WVO) through it to plug the filters. If the sludge sat in the tank a long time, you may need to take out the tank and clean it or replace it with a gasser tank. If the guy had it longer and had actually changed the filters before, he would not have dumped it because the filters plugged. I would guess the original or first and second owners had it until maybe 5-10k miles ago, (or less) then the moron bought it and tried running unfiltered WVO in it, then dumped the car and the current flipper got it. I doubt any serious damage has been done to the IP or engine. If I bought it, here's what I'd do: I'd put 2 main filters, 3 prefilters and tools, blue gloves, + shop rags in the trunk. I'd not put more than a half tank of diesel in it for 3-4 "fills". If the filters don't plug by then perhaps the tank is ok. Go to 3/4/ fills, then to full tanks. Otherwise, if the filters plug frequently, buy a gasser tank, and swap out the tanks. My experience: documented somewhere in the archives: FL POS (124 300D) had sat for years with veg oil in the tank. It gelled, (polymerized) and the water did no good either. no changes were made in the fuel system. Just dump vo or wvo in the tank. At some time the VO ate the DV orings in the IP. It leaked grease, but the car sat long enough the grease polymerized and sealed the DVs again. I put Diesel in and it ran, but I ended up taking the tank out, pressure washing the inside of it the best I could; dried it out as well as I could, then put it back in. that process took 2-3 days. that is why I suggested you just buy a gasser tank. I think it could make you a great car, IF the mileage is true, and even if it is 300k, it could still make you a good car. Re: [MBZ] Clay needs this
IMHO, the frame is a bad design that uses square tubing, instead of round DOM type tubing. The weld joints with square tubing present multiple stress risers at every juncture where a corner intercepts another plane. Round DOM type tubing, properly laid out reduces those intercept stresses. The design could have much more strength without adding weight. Also, side impact, roll over impact, and front and rear impact considerations are abysmal, as it is designed. Would be much more cost effective to start with a clean sheet and build a car around a good Mercedes engine/trans. Besides, the body design sucks. Classically sucks, but still sucks. Kaleb, I'm not sure what has been swapped. Those seats look exactly like the ones in my 1980 300SD and they are original and they are leather. Of course, my wife paid around $3K to replace the leather and pads front and rear less than a year after we purchased the car. Yes, it's her car so I had to grin and bare it. The seats are still great tho' after over 20 years. I never cared for the wider, flatter 126 seats that always seemed to split at the seams. Best Wishes, Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] Finnie (and other) Fun
The 78 CD is only 2 decades newer! But I like the idea of flying a 60yo airplane, I 'm sure it is really more like actually flying than twiddling dials and such. I flew Cherokee 140s and 6s and those were sorta basic airplanes too. A buddy of mine flew Cessna 150s, those were fun too. Saw a guy driving a gray CD this afternoon, it had some nice patina. He (and the car) looked like he should be on the list, somewhat scruffy but serviceable. Drove the SL600 on my Costco run, parked next to a 300D with the fender vent (I can never remember what year that is). I was driving on our 2 lane road off the Island, some Bubba was riding my ass for about 6 miles in his large jacked-up truck. Speed limit not enough for him. Got to the 4 lane, he whipped to the left lane to pass me as we turned. I jumped on the throttle and ho-ree sh... I was doing 80 before it even registered. Bubba was about 200yd behind me but passed me a few minutes later, and blasted his loud mufflers for me. At that point I still felt gratified, so let Bubba have his low-rent fun. I just can't get enough of that car, but after seeing the CD I decided I needed to get the brakes fixed up on the 78 and get it running for some spring and summer fun, another sort of gratification I think. I'll put that on my list... --FT On 2/9/19 2:39 PM, OK Don via Mercedes wrote: Yes, and most of your cars are decades newer than my airplane - 1957. You hear something and start to freak out Drive to work - uneventful, maybe even fun. The toll road is a reversible with three lanes, no access for roughly 11 miles. Very nice road surface, new and smooth as glass. The car ran flawlessly, in fact, it found a sweet spot in the upper 60s that made it sound great and was really tracking and handling quite nicely, considering that I am in serious need of new front springs. Cool. Got to work without an issue. Whew! Drive to headliner shop - interstate and city streets, busy but the car did well again. Not a problem. Drive home, mostly interstate except for the last 10 miles or so, which is surface streets. Again, ran well, no problems. Even fired up the FrigiKing since it was nearly 80 and got some ice cubes running - well, plenty of cold air. About a mile from home I was turning through an intersection and it sounded like I ran over something small in the road. Hmm. No problem, car was running fine. Probably a big rock or some piece of junk I didn't see. Pull into the garage. Need to straighten out the car a bit, so I put it in reverse. It continues to creep forward. Hmm. Put it in neutral. Creeps forward. OK, I'll just leave it here and I'll park the wife's SL500 so she doesn't bang the door into my car, since it was encroaching into her space a little. Get down on my hands and knees and take a look under the car. Yup. Transmission linkage bushing failed. Got a couple on their way from the MB warehouse in Jacksonville. I totally trust this car now. [MBZ] Fwd: 1981 Mercedes Benz 300SD
Bob, I have a 1980 300SD (over 420,00 miles) and a 1983 300D (over 360,000 miles), both with the 617 engines. The good about this car is it must be an early 1981 as it has the 116 seats and not the 126 zippers, waiting to rip apart seats. As to the wheels, I've used the allows for over 20 years with no problems. Personally don't like the chrome as they gave these models a pimp mobile look. If it starts good, shifts good, etc., then I'd look under the plastic sides for any hidden rust and look at the suspension for any excess wear etc. If all is ok, the AC should be an easy fix. Adjust the valves first. As to the price, it should be around $2800-3200 for this condition, after all it's still a very old car with old parts. However, at that mileage, you've got years left on that engine. I realize there are those on this list that want a bottom feeder price for anything they buy. Just look close and pay accordingly. I probably paid more for both of my cars than this list would have approved. But, I've gotten over 20 years each with nothing beyond the normal items as they've aged, and I've immensely enjoyed both cars and still do. So, good luck and best wishes. Most of all look close and make your own decisions. Roger Roger Hale Dinnerware Classics, Inc. Re: [MBZ] Finnie Fun
Yeah, that’s the worst. You have a car puke on you and now you’re sensitized to it. Everywhere you go in it you’re just waiting for the other shoe to drop. I hate that. And Don, you have far larger cohones than I ever will. I can’t imagine doing it in an airplane, although a former coworker was an A&P DIY’er. To the best of my knowledge he’s still alive and flying. -D > On Feb 8, 2019, at 9:46 PM, Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes > wrote: > > Great story. That’s totally me in the SL600. Completely paranoid.
