Seam sealer is what I would try. If it's not available you might try black
windshield bedding compound available at Autozone and probably other FLAPS.
It's close to sun-proof, it sticks to metal and glass but can be removed much
easier than caulking of various sorts if it doesn't work.
Good luck,

There are nicer ones that aren’t as beat up for that kind of money. Between
fixing the bumpers, PS hose, battery and tires you’ll be into it for another

And that color is pretty awful. My $1300 ML500 looked better than that when I

Isn't this the one that has killed 2 vehicles already? If he's already proven
to not take care of even middle aged vehicles what makes you think he can
handle something older?
Randy is going to have a heart attack but I agree with him completely, a
Corolla or Civic is the right choice here. Many dealerships will throw in
maintenance for the warranty period which is probably 5 years, he'll just have
to take it in when they tell him to.For those 5 years (at least) no mechanic
will be required, the car will just work.
Actually as I think of it a Chevy Cruze, if he can still get one, is probably
an even better choice out in the hinterlands. Chevy still has dealerships all
over the place.

vacant oil field town in ND. Pretty much only the big three, one of which sells
honda cars.  He would have to visit a larger town two hours away to access the
other imports.  Then there would be the need to find qualified mechanic in
town, should something go wrong.

I really like the space afforded by the cars of the 60’s and 70’s.  Terrible
fuel usage, but … s much room.

Re: [MBZ] Crapped out cheep crappy cheep WUZ: 123 bubble

2019-08-16 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
My folks had 3 Liberties with the 3.7, it's okay. I think it's disappointing
compared to the old 4.0 but seems adequate and uses less fuel. I forget exact
mileage but each of theirs got replaced for other issues, not engine breakdown.
Dad's did over 150,000 miles for sure. The first one was short lived but it got
totalled in the driveway by a high speed drunk...

Well, given where he is, a used F150 might be the ticket - solid and lots
of repair services available. Doesn't matter whether he needs the bed for
hauling things or not - it's just transportation, and there ought to be
lots of them to choose from.

Cars have become appliances that you toss out once the ash tray is full. My
personal vote would be for something old and simple that most any idiot at a
repair place can fix without computers. That speaks to being reliable, though
it might take some attention to keep it on the road. The new stuff is all just
a video game computer that interferes with the ability of the vehicle to run

The opportunity to find a simple New car is limited by his location in the

It sort of sounds like your son should go and lease or buy a new minimal
vehicle (Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla maybe) and take it in to the
dealer for routine service. A new vehicle should give him relatively
trouble free service for the length of the lease or payment plan and
then he should turn it in and get another. He has not had good luck with
vehicles and some of that is likely due to a lack of attention to them
on his part.

You personally may well be able to keep an old vehicle moving forward
but it does not sound like he has the same skills or interests and if he
is no where near you for help and assistance, he needs a vehicle that
will not cause him trouble.

My elder son is not good at that sort of thing either. When he lived
here, my mechanic younger son and I kept an eye on the elder son's
vehicle and made the repairs. When he moved to a new job, 1200 miles
away, we encouraged him to get a new vehicle and he did. He got a new
Mazda 3. It has served him well so far.

If the heads are aluminum (and they likely are) it might be a good idea
to change the plugs anyway just to ensure that they are not seized in
there for good.

With valve covers, the engine heat likely keeps them dry and the oil

I tried silicone sealant on the sunroof on the SLC - didn't work, even with
considerable cleaning of the adjacent surfaces. If I had another sunroof to
deal with, I'd MIG it closed.

If pretty isn't a real consideration, consider Henrys roof seal , It comes
in black and white.. the white version might not look "to bad".
They also make a tape to go under the paint on roof seal, if you have
extreme rust holes to deal with. The stuff is really tough, it will hold up
in Arizona summer heat with roof temps above 160 F... so might work for you.
Comes in quarts, 1/2 gal. and gallons.. or 5 gallon buckets... [in case you
really like it and want to do the whole car.. haha]
Home Depot, Lowes, etc carry it.
