I went to geezer hour at the grocery on Monday morning 6A-7A.? It was
mobbed with geezers driving their carts like they drive their cars in
the parking lot.? Some of those people were rather vicious and of course
they tend to wander and leave their carts crosswise of the aisles and
are oblivious to anyone else around.? Then after going through all the
checkout they stand there and oops realize, oh I actually gotta pay for
this, then root around for a wallet and debit card or whatever and that
takes another 5min.? I got a few things and decided not to deal with
that madness again.

Popped in yesterday afternoon, there was hardly anyone there. Only good
steaks, not much other beef.? Some chicken etc.? Plenty of eggyweggs.?
Other staples in short supply but I am fairly well-stocked in that regard.

Nice.

I built one by stripping the jacket off of an 1ft extension
cable. Quick and easy - but no current multiplying.

Get off my damn lawn!!!

2020-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I believe there was something about them using (mineral?) oil in their
hydraulic systems, or something to that effect? I was thinking I had heard
about non-Rolls mechanics working on them and putting the wrong stuff in them
and doing some serious damage as a result.

I’m pretty sure I’ve spoken about how the first place I worked for in the
generator business was next to a Rolls Royce dealer in Zionsville, IN. It was
just a little hole in the wall place, but people drove or had their RRs shipped
in to have them worked on there. We would wander over during lunch if the shop
door was open and chat the guy up. He showed us a lot of neat stuff, none of
which I recall except that they paint marked every fastener to know if it had
been tampered with.

Re: [MBZ] Economics

2020-04-14 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Lol, you need to read Pikety's books.

Seems that economists mostly sit around doing imaginary "mathematics" making up
meaningless equations that prove whatever they want to prove.

Not news to me, I figured that out decades ago when our faculty sponsor for the
sailing club while I was in graduate school was an econ professor and getting
disgusted with the subject.

Airy fairy bullshit is what I would call most of it.

When the currency is pegged to a physical object (like gold) increases in
production, harvest, efficiency, or mining all result in lower prices as the
amount of gold is more or less fixed, and the available currency is infelxible.
One of the major causes of the Depression was the gold standard -- as
industrial production ramped up in the 20's -- one of the golden ages of
efficiency increases and productivity increase per worker hour (mostly due to
automation) -- and the US had some really nice crop years, the amount of goods
increased rapidly at a time when gold mining was yeilding very little gold. If
you had twice as much wheat this year as last, it can only cost half as much
per bushel if there is no more gold.

Add in the collapse of the embargo on Russian wheat when the Whites lost the
civil war and the Reds took over and the consequent collapse of the European
wheat market for American wheat, and prices plummeted.

The flip side of that equation, to my mind, is that when you inflate your way
out of massive debt, as the Western world has been doing since the 1960s,
prices inevitably must rise as the value of the floating currency declines --
and vast "fortunes" made by high speed stock trading and real estate
speculation decrease the value of the currency (also known as inflation).

Re: [MBZ] OT how bad could this be

2020-04-14 Thread Randy Bennell via Mercedes
I think I have told the story about my son the mechanic working on the
brakes of an old Rolls before but will do it again.

I don't know or remember all of the details so forgive me if I am a bit
vague.

This fellow had an old Rolls. Not sure of the vintage. Not ancient but
old - maybe from the 50's.

The brakes were essentially non existent. He brought it to their shop
because they did custom work on hotrods, race cars etc.

They looked at the brake system which was something quite unusual. If I
recall, it had some sort of hydraulic booster driven off the back of the
transmission. Parts were either unobtainium or silly expensive so they
looked for alternatives.

They installed a brake booster out of a Chevrolet and that improved
matters somewhat but not enough. This thing had massive drum brakes if I
recall correctly and they started looking at the brake mechanism for
clues as to why it did not work like they thought it should. Ultimately,
they elected to reverse the shoes in the drums. I think they put the
ones from the right side onto the left side etc. Totally backwards by
anyone's book, but it worked reasonably well. I don't think they felt
that the brakes had been put together wrong by previous mechanics.  My
son still did not think the brakes were good on the car but the owner
was happy as could be. He said they were much improved from the way it
was when he brought it in and felt it was safe to drive it. I think he
only used it in photo shoots for weddings or something like that so did
not intend to drive it cross country.

If anyone is truly interested, I will ask him and either correct my
guesses or add whatever detail he can provide. I know he should remember
this well.

As OKDon said, "Looks great - Atta-Boy!"

What is the scale of the ductwork we are seeing (how large in diameter is
the round outlet)?

What is the red T-shaped "thing" with the black parts?

Is the second picture rotated?

Re: [MBZ] Don’t miss out on this fantastic investment opportunity

2020-04-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A man after my own heart. I’ve done stuff like this on more than one occasion
and it’s often, not always, yielded results.

“Gee, I’m sorry I can’t offer more, and I certainly understand your
predicament. Be sure to reach out to me in the future should things change.”

I always share my observations and information whenever possible, too. Sure, it
may end up working against me on occasion, but more often than not it tends to
build trust with the seller. I just send a note from time to time to touch base
and maintain contact.

You just have to be patient sometimes and willing to commiserate. It’s all
about trust.

You have to give/show the title to TitleMax or whomever when you go get
the loan, they put a lien on it so you really can't convey it.  That's

[MBZ] Economics

2020-04-14 Thread Craig via Mercedes
In regards to comments made by Andrew and Dan about the used car market
collapsing, is there anyone here who understands economics to be able to
comment on the article I found below? I have heard a quote from Benjamin
Anderson who said the Great Depression of the '30s "was great in
magnitude and endured because the 'government played God.'"

Craig

P.S. I do not understand economics. When I was in college, the fellow in
the next student house room was an economics major. His faculty
advisor was the prof who taught the economics course I was required
to take and commented to him I was one of the people who should not
 be forced to take economics.

--

Even If the Fed Keeps Pumping Money,
We May Still See Deflation

It is tempting to assume both money supply inflation and price
inflation will come soon as the central banks pumps new money.
But if banks aren’t lending because the economy is in disarray,
the money supply may actually shrink, and prices may even fall.

So far in March, the data indicates that the yearly growth rate of our
measure for US money supply (as measured by the AMS metric) stood at
10.5 percent against 6.6 percent in February and 1.7 percent in March
last year.

Given that the Fed is busy throwing money at the economy as if there were
no tomorrow, it is tempting to suggest that the momentum of the AMS is
likely to increase further and that consequently runaway inflation could
emerge in no time.

However, in response to the massive decline in real economic activity,
it is possible that banks’ generation of loans out of thin air, i.e.,
through fractional reserve lending, could fall sharply.

For the time being, the annual growth of our measure for this type of
credit -- also known as inflationary credit -- stood in March at 14.1
percent versus 7.4 percent in February and 3.4 percent in March 2019.

If the momentum of inflationary credit were to fall sharply, it would
likely cause the yearly growth rate of money supply to follow suit (see
chart). Consequently, a sharp fall in price inflation could emerge. If
this were to happen, the government and the central bank would intensify
their spending and money pumping to counter the deflation.

 Figure-1

A general decline in the prices of goods and services is regarded as bad
news, since it is seen to be associated with major economic slumps such
as the Great Depression of the 1930s.

In July 1932, the yearly growth rate of industrial production stood at
–31 percent while the yearly growth rate of the consumer price index (CPI)
stood at –10.7 percent by September 1932 (see chart).

 Figure-2

Is the Fall in Prices Bad News?

Contrary to popular belief, there is nothing wrong with declining prices.
In fact it is the essential characteristic of a free market economy to
select those commodities as money whose purchasing power grows over time.
What characterizes an industrial market economy under a commodity money
such as gold is that the prices of goods follow a declining trend.
According to Joseph Salerno,

In fact, historically, the natural tendency in the industrial
market economy under a commodity money such as gold has been
for general prices to persistently decline as ongoing capital
accumulation and advances in industrial techniques led to a
continual expansion in the supplies of goods. Thus throughout
the nineteenth century and up until the First World War, a mild
deflationary trend prevailed in the industrialized nations as
rapid growth in the supplies of goods outpaced the gradual
growth in the money supply that occurred under the classical
gold standard. For example, in the US from 1880 to 1896, the
wholesale price level fell by about 30 percent, or by 1.75% per
year, while real income rose by about 85 percent, or around 5
 percent per year.1

In a free market the rising purchasing power of money, i.e., declining
prices, is the mechanism that makes the great variety of goods produced
accessible to many people. On this Murray Rothbard wrote,

Improved standards of living come to the public from the fruits
of capital investment. Increased productivity tends to lower
prices (and costs) and thereby distribute the fruits of free
enterprise to all the public, raising the standard of living of
all consumers. Forcible propping up of the price level prevents
this spread of higher living standards.2

Most experts argue that a general fall in prices is always “bad news,”
for it postpones people’s buying of goods and services, which in turn
undermines investment in plants and machinery. All this sets in motion an
economic slump. Moreover, as the slump further depresses the prices of
goods, it intensifies the pace of economic decline.

For consumers to postpone their buying of goods because prices are

It is all heading toward FireStick for us. We are not Apple people. Maybe

extra for many things. It is possible to do Netflix through the Firestick
and many other services.

My plan is an LS100 or LS500 epson projector, firestick in the Denon
receiver which has ethernet and then hdmi out to the projector. I think we
have space for a 100 inch image and a bunch of speakers in the ceiling with
subwoofers in the cabinet so it should be nicer than the current ipad setup.
