2020-04-21 Thread Clay via Mercedes
There is still all the cargo airlines. UPS/Amazon/FedEx, as well as
international carriers with lots of space to move products instead of people.
Article in todays local news was about the steady increase in cargo flights and
massive reduction in people planes. There is constant (50-90 plane) cargo
volume (all the cheep chinee contaminated test kits and PPE) vs around six
passenger flights landing in the past 24 hours. Four Alaska air flights
instead of the normal few dozens. Delta had a single flight, as did United.

Tennessee and other cargo hubs must be seeing lots of volume and getting
inexpensive JetA that is not going into tourist flights.

One advantage of bunker C is that at normal seagoing temperatures it's very,
very viscous. That means it doesn't slop around in tanks.

Also means it has to be heated to move it at any normal flow rate, it's really
what's left after all the lighter stuff is distilled out, column bottoms is the
other name. High ash content too.

You are correct. I was thinking about it relative to the refining aspect.
Number 6 is Bunker C, and it has a BTU content of around 150,000 BTU/gallon,
where Number 2 diesel is around 140,000 BTU/gallon.

However, as previously noted, bunker fuel needs to be heated to be atomized
whereas number 2 does not.

Err, BTU content of bunker fuel is high. Higher than diesel.

Though there are two ways of measuring - energy/volume or
energy/mass. Bunker C rates quite high on energy/volume as it is

Re: [MBZ] Why is gas not running about .25 per gallon?

2020-04-21 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I seem to remember that the cruise lines are/were moving away from bunker
fuel. I remember it being extra poisonous or something in case of a spill.
Back in the late '90s Dad and I did a job for the railroad and got to watch
them start a loco that had been sitting out in the cold. They had several HUGE
propane burners attached to 100# tanks that sat in pipes that went through the
fuel tank to melt the bunker fuel within so it could be started. IIRC it took
several hours to get it warm enough to start. I remember them telling us why
they started it there instead of hauling it to the shop but I don't remember
the reason.

Re: [MBZ] 77 280E -- the deal

2020-04-21 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I went yesterday to look at this car.  The girl said it was dead by the
road about a mile from her house.  So we meet where the car is.  She
tells me she swapped her 05 truck for it 4 days ago, guy says it needs a
"timing belt."  She drove it a ways to visit a friend and she says it
overheated then died right there close to the house. This girl is 22,
very sweet, the guy won't do anything for her, she is distraught, knows
nothing, loves the car, has no idea how to deal with it and no idea what
to do on it, just wants some money and to move on.  She figured it was
driveable, so did, with this consequence.

It looks really nice.  Newish paint, a few little rust spots here and
there bubbling through but nothing major (but who knows what's under the
paint?).  Interior very nice, looks like all the upholstery was replaced
or maybe just very clean.  Carpets very clean, headliner good.  Wood
veneer gone on some of the pieces but someone varnished the base and it
looks half decent.  Original radio. Dash looks good.  Glove box actually
latches.  New whitewall tires of some off brand but they look OK.

I pop the hood and notice the alternator/water pump belt is gone.
H no alternator = dead battery.  No pump = overheating. Engine
bay very clean, looks like new plug wires, etc.  Rad was mostly full.
There is some kind of aftermarket K$N like round filter stuck on the
intake, original air filter not there.  I see a bit of oil down at the
bottom of the head on the passenger side.  No milkshake on the dipstick
so at least no water in the oil.  Her friend goes and gets a jug of
water, we top off the rad, only took a bit, no oil in the rad, good
sign.  Has a newish Sanden compressor, 134, hoses are new.

I put in a good battery, crank a coupla times and it fires up but dies.
Crank again, it catches and sputters.  Uhoh.  Try again and give it some
gas and it finally catches and smooths out and is running well.  Go look
at it and listen, I hear a bit of clatter from a back cylinder, not sure
if it is valves or what but it is running well and pretty smooth.  I get
in and drive it to her house, gets to maybe 250 right at then, probably
OK.  Trans shifting fine, brakes good,   Shut it off and pop the hood
again, doesn't seem too hot but I notice a bit of spitting down at the
bottom of the head where that oil was, I guess the head gasket is
cracked or something.  We discuss it, she is actually really happy I
know something about the car and some random jerk isn't wanting to buy
it, she loves it and wants it to be taken care of, she knows she knows
nothing, etc.  We work the deal so we're good.

Went back with the trailer this morning and got it, it was a little
unhappy starting again but once it lit off it ran well, idle a bit
high.  I stopped at an auto parts store and got a belt, will go put it
on shortly and take it for a drive and see how it does.

For $1200 I think it is a pretty nice car though it might need the
engine work.  The guy at the auto parts I got the belt from was a former
mech at the Stealer up the road and said he had rebuilt a couple of
those engines, got his name and number.  He says it is not a real hard
job, just have to watch the head bolt torques, etc.  So I guess I will
see... I'm kinda happy with it, it's a pretty car.  Looks like someone
put a fair amount of money into it so I'm hoping other stuff has been
dealt with fairly well.  Worse comes to worse I can flip it to a FB boy...

I'll put up some pics later on some site.

Oh, so she says she needs another car cheap, if I see something let her
know, or if she finds something can she call me to help her since it
seems I know something about cars...  I did tell her once it gets sorted
out I will come give her a ride in it, and she was really happy about
that!  looks like I might have adopted another daughter... YIKES!!!

I put the OE spring in my Finnie as a part of the restoration work I did on it.
Pretty easy job, I think the spring was about $100 from Mercedes. Put new pads,
in, too, but had to compromise somewhat because only one size is still
available.

They put in the wrong spring when the ripped out the hydropneumatic
compensator. The Febi kit includes the "HD" spring, which causes the
incorrect camber this car exhibits. You can still buy the correct
spring from Mercedes-Benz, which is what I did for my '72 280SEL. Or
if you're really lucky and still have the compensator, it can be
rebuilt (not cheaply, of course).

2020-04-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
The article is wrong on many levels.

" The coronavirus is driving the huge dip in oil prices" is false. The
economic crisis has been driven by our government mandating social
distancing and shutting down "non-essential" activities, like churches and
most businesses. Other countries (Sweden for instance) are not taking this
approach, and so they have not cratered their economy.

" The oil industry didn’t get the memo, though, and just kept digging up
more oil." Very ignorant statement. Once a well is producing, one cannot
simply shut it off. Oil doesn't come from a spigot. Oil is not "dug up",
that is coal.

" What all this points to is the need for government intervention and
stat." Ah, now we have the true intent of the author: Use the crisis to
increase government power. Nice.

Now I remember why I stopped reading that site, it's almost all fake news
and propaganda.

I probably wrote this before, but it bears repeating. Sooner or later the

percent in favor of diesel or gasoline. Depending on the consumption of
fuels adjacent to diesel on the cracking spectrum, the availability of
diesel fuel could potentially be interrupted. Which, if you receive
anything by truck, will be a bit of a glitch in your supply chain.

The latter. Says on the container that it meets Z1 and DW-1 Honda spec.

Yes I know there's some supposed magic in the Honda fluid but I'm not

blew up at similar mileage, though with different symptoms.

Even the owner's manual says you can use Dexron III if the Honda fluid

I think modern cruise ships burn diesel now.

Bunker fuel was used in steam boilers.

Between the declines in jet fuel (basically high-grade kerosene) and
shipping, I would guess there is plenty of diesel at least for the near
term. And it sounds like things will be opening up starting soon.

Nobody's dying from overloaded hospitals or lack of ventilators, so
things should start opening up again (at least in a controlled way).

Bunker fuel is about the bottom of the refining chain, as it’s about as close
as you can get to crude. Very low BTU content, quite heavy, too, as I recall.

Re: [MBZ] Why is gas not running about .25 per gallon?

Think of all the huge quantities of bunker fuel or whatever they call it
that all the cruise ships would be burning but are not currently.

I probably wrote this before, but it bears repeating. Sooner or later the

favor of diesel or gasoline. Depending on the consumption of fuels adjacent to
diesel on the cracking spectrum, the availability of diesel fuel could
potentially be interrupted. Which, if you receive anything by truck, will be a
bit of a glitch in your supply chain.

What Mitch said. If it's a Honda, you have to use Honda transmission fluid.

Are you talking about Castrol Z1 (very outdated Honda spec) or Multi
Vehicle Import (not the right stuff, might be good enough might be not)?

Did a complete 3x drain/fill last summer so fluid should be reasonably

Just catching up on this... beware that the M110 isn't like a diesel engine
in a W123. Theres lots of emissions control stuff, idle air control, etc.
Its all expensive and difficult to work on, since its all under the intake
manifold. I'm just finishing up some major work on a 84 280SL which came
in running poorly and idling at 2000rpm. All the rubber hoses under the
intake manifold were bad, among other things. Car is back together now,
but it was 10+ hours to R the manifold and do everything correctly.

Re: [MBZ] Why is gas not running about .25 per gallon?

2020-04-21 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
There is no hard relationship between the daily price of oil, the
futures price of oil, and the daily price of gasoline.
Around Michigan and Ohio, the daily price of 87E10 has been around 25-35
cents in recent weeks, or around $0.85-1.00 with tax.

I heard of 15 cent gas (wholesale pre-tax) in the Dakotas.
Meanwhile, the May futures price of unleaded gasoline was around 70
cents before yesterday's crash, 58 cents now.

https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/RB=F?p=RB=F&.tsrc=fin-srch

Cash price at the pump averages around 1.50-1.60 in Michigan, but on 7
mile in Detroit I saw Gasbuddy prices as low as $0.849. That's ended
now, the cheapest non-club price in Michigan now is 0.949 at a BP in
Fremont.
(the Costco in Madison Heights is .849, and you can use a credit card,
the .849 in Detroit two weeks ago was cash only)

Here in Charlotte it's 1.499, which sounds highly profitable until you
realize how much volume has dropped. They make a lot on every sale but
they're selling a lot less.
10 miles down the road in Bellevue it's 1.209. The markup over wholesale
is what it was before the crash. And there are a few places around
Lansing that are under 1.25.

Meanwhile, in Florida, 1.359 is as good as it gets.
Oregon, 1.799.
Aside from a 1.599 price war in Farmersville, 1.899 is the cheapest in
California.
