[MBZ] Self Gratification

2020-08-12 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I drove the SL600 this evening to pick up a couple growlers of beer from a
local brewery to bring to a get-together with a coupla buddies. There were some
slow drivers on the road I had to dispense with quickly in an orderly and
efficient manner. It was quite gratifying to stomp the go pedal, kick down, and
launch like a Saturn V.

One of my buddies just started working today for Vivian at her new place in
Charleston making biscuits and hand pies.

Re: [MBZ] 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class · E 320 4MATIC Wagon 4D,$2,500

2020-08-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
A TDI Jetta isn't anything like an A class, its a big family saloon car with
150hp, 230 #ft of torque and the fun of a 6spd manual. I can sit comfortably in
the back seat with the front seat all the way back. Its much more akin to an E
class without that extra MB special something. Its a little more tinny, the
plastic is a little cheaper feeling but new it was less than half the price and
the fun of a 6spd manual.
Did I mention it has a manual transmission? ;)

But it's a far cry from an E320 4MATIC wagon on all other measures.

I have filled pits many times. Clean with Hydrocloric (muriatic)
acid, then use JBWeld (slow, not fast cure) and work it into all
the pits making sure that all the low spots are filled. To tall
can be removed later.

I save the stick and mixing "plate" to monitor the cure without
disturbing the real repair. I like using flat sections of clear
plastic packaging as the mixing plate. Once the JBWeld is set
firm, but ideally before it is fully cured is when I like to use a
knife to remove the major extras. Once fully cured, I use a file
and/or sandpaper to make it smooth.

Wasn't 2004 still M112 with 733.6?
So a E320 4Matic would be the same mechanically as my 1999 wagon, which
was originally rated 27 hwy, since reduced to 24 or 25 under the 2008
guidelines.
27 is entirely achievable with a good running wagon with 240kmi on the
odo, a RWD sedan should get 30.

Cost is a factor also. My Jetta is pretty much all three (for a given value of
"powerful") but the diesel engine was a significant extra cost when the car was

Re: [MBZ] 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class · E 320 4MATIC Wagon 4D,$2,500

2020-08-12 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
It's a big, safe, heavy, reasonably powerful car.

My Volvo of the same vintage with a V6 gets similar fuel economy.

These cars are made for and sold to customers who are not shopping for
fuel economy.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Novel approach to beating the pandemic.

2020-08-12 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
I see a basic problem with their premise that we have no other choices other
than test, vaccine, or lockdown isolation.

They didn't even consider the Swedish model of protecting the most vulnerable
and letting the rest of the population achieve herd immunity as the virus runs
its course.  Far less cost in terms of human life and economic impact me
thinks, and there is no perfect lockdown that will prevent the virus from
running its course, the lockdown just slows it down.  We are killing ourselves
trying to delay the inevitable.

   Seller's description…

This E320 is mechanically sound, there are a couple issues..left rear
air spring has a leak. It does inflate while engine is running and
drives fine. Wheel bearing on same wheel needs replacing, operates but
you can hear the sound. Left tailgate lift needs replacing, I have the
part. Body is not in perfect and I had planned to have it repainted but
am moving to the coast and going to buy a convertible. Price reflects
issues.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Novel approach to beating the pandemic.

2020-08-12 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Its not the stupidest idea I've seen for sure but IIRC the cheap/fast tests
right now are only like 80% accurate. I guess its better than nothing but not
by a lot. Even if it were, say $1/test that would be a big cost for a school
with hundreds of students to test on a daily basis.
I'm nervous of Russia's release of a vaccine. It'll be interesting to see what
happens. I suspect China is right behind and will be releasing something in a
month or two.
