My next door neighbor has hives and has had issues with mites over the years.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varroa_destructor

The "murder hornets" found earlier this year in Washington state also kill off
bee colonies.

Here is a step in the right direction.

I used to catch them with my mom's dad in Oregon, until the population
crashed and they shut the sport fishery down. So we have been speculating
about why that happened in my family for 30 years or so.

If this is true, it is fantastic news for fishermen.

Now if only we can figure out what random chemical is killing all the
bees...

Re: [MBZ] Three Flavors of Hydrogen?

2020-12-05 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
To me, hydrogen only makes sense as energy storage, not as a
source. Think of it as a battery. You use intermittent power such as
solar or wind to make hydrogen gas that can be stored, transported, and
used when and where needed.

The problem is (as I understand it) that so far, splitting water
molecules is inefficient. The H-O-H chemical bonds are pretty stable;
they don't just fall apart. And then you need to compress and/or
supercool the hydrogen to store it or transport it, and that takes more
energy.

Yes it's such a problem that it has been known and studied for years and
the salmon keep coming back.

More seriously, it's apparently finally been found that a specific
chemical used as an antioxidant in the rubber is toxic to the
salmon. So, perhaps a substitute can be found that isn't so toxic.

Interesting. I’ll check it out. I have some Febi fluid I got for the 95 SL600,
and some for the 560SEC. I think it was the same Febi stuff. I might have an
old bottle of Benz juice for the 79 300TD somewhere, I got that from Rusty ages
ago. I suppose it will need some after changing the spheres.

The girl child checked the car out, drove it, said most everything was
copacetic, a coupla little things but nothing major. No rust. She said the
bouncing was not particularly significant so doesn’t seem like the spheres have
totally given up.

Carfax didn’t show anything concerning, 3 owners all in NC.

I guess we’re going to get it, she thought it was pretty decent. I’ll go up
Tuesday with the trailer to bring her 124 back, see about selling it then. It’s
in pretty good shape aside from crappy paint/clear coat gone.

I used to pay $1, or maybe 0.99, for Matchbox around 1972 if they
weren't on sale. (there's probably a 1972 catalog in with my cars,
wherever they are)

Today, I paid $1 for the 300TD at Dollar General, and $0.99 for the
3000MKII at Meijer.

I assume they're only 0.97 at Walmart?

My brother has worked from home for a couple of decades. He has a dedicated
room in the house that is for his office and nothing else. He didn’t even let
the kids go in it when they were younger.

He was the one who enlightened me about the home office deduction.

I talked to the guy. Car sounds ok, he was pretty open about it. Said he
thought maybe a front CV was creaking but was not too bad. He couldn’t forward
the carfax but has it there. Asked Kleb to run it. 123k miles is very low,
surprising, the interior looks very good, noticed a little body wavies on the
RR door and fender which is not a huge deal.

The daughter unit is gonna go there and look at it, it’s about 1.5 hr drive I
could go up Tuesday, he said he would hold it with a deposit If she thinks it’s
worth it. Told her to check under For rust etc. and see what the carfax said,
where it was from etc.

I’ll buy it if it checks out, she’ll give me her 95E320 I can sell and the
difference is Merry Christmas.

Re: [MBZ] I can not believe how stupid people are

2020-12-05 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
Project into the future a few years and deduce the long term business
effect of the Covid induced "work from home edict".
Will the urban population suddenly or eventually realize the do not need to
live in clusters in the city environment, then migrate to small towns and
rural areas, while still producing work product and being paid for it?

Or, will companies simply hire and outsource workers from foreign
countries at a much cheaper labor rate, cut their costs, and continue
business via "remote work"?

Thoughts on how this will trend? Labor market has been gutted for more
than two decades now with near slave labor in third world countries. Will
"brain power labor" be next to die from outsourcing?
Or, has it already, and we are too numbed and dumbed down to realize it?

When the rich American workers no longer work, who buys the product from
cheap third world labor?

Is this a "business cycle" and is there a profit opportunity laying
somewhere to be found?

That and when they’ve griped about work paying for their Internet access, the
counter is, “So you wouldn’t have it if you didn’t need to work at home?”

This is nickel and dime stuff by people who just want to gripe, in my opinion.
When someone sits down with them and crunches the numbers, as a couple of

As Mitch alludes to, the IRS requirements for office space at home are very,
very strict and difficult to comply with. You pretty much have to have a
dedicated space you do absolutely nothing else in the way of personal stuff
with or it doesn’t qualify, as I recall.

We’ve heard some griping from employees about this, but that’s countered with,
“So how much money have you saved this year not having to commute, buy lunch or
work clothing?”

Yeah. That shuts it down pretty quick.

It’s a big win as far as I’m concerned. I’ve saved a boatload of money just on

At my last job the product our swallowed-up company had produced, and
maintained,
was sent to India. We 'trained' them on it. Job retention there was so poor
that we
had to keep 'training' them, and I never saw them actually fix reported
problems.
We fixed several of the worse ones. Eventually they closed our office, leaving
it
in the oh-so-incapable hands in India.

In the 80's one of our vendors had contracted out some work to India, as a test.
It did not go well. All that survived was a small emacs-inspired text editor
that had
an "i" in the name, standing for "Indian". Now that I think of it, the last
surviving copy
of that I had put into the product that was sent back to India. It's gone full
