I tried it tonight. The 165/15 tire did not fit in the spare tire
well. So I guess I need to get a 155 tire for the spare. It will be a
bit like the donut spare in a modern car I guess. The overall diameter
on the 155 tire is about 0.6" smaller as well.

Thanks for mentioning this, I would have never considered that the spare
tire well was that tight.

Not a surgeon. Residents and Fellows can work nights at care facilities or at a
docinabox or hospitals/clinics if they are short staffed. When former wife was
a resident and fellow the rate was like $1k/night. Probably closer to $2k now.

Neighbor in Houston who was an ER trauma surgeon picked up these gigs sitting
at a remote bank of monitors overnight Watching ICU patients. If something
happened he could call a doc who was floating at the hospital. This was like
15yr ago he was getting $1800 a night. He would do this a few nights a month on
his days off when he wanted to buy a car or something or go on a trip.

Re: [MBZ] Becker radio codes

The guy at the parts counter is probably looking up the VMI on his computer by
searching the radio serial number field, I presume. Never asked if it’s
searchable by the different fields in the document - I’ll ask next time I’m
over there. It may also be searchable by the build sheet in the EPC, possibly.
Still easiest way to get it is with the last 8 of the VIN.

I am partial to Vintage Longines, Wittnauer, and Movado wrist watches.
Especially the self-winding variety. I had a Grand Prix that would hold its

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s a “Day-Date” 40 in white gold, a somewhat plebeian Rolex that is nice but
not over the top like the models in the Professional line. I wanted a Rolex but
didn’t want some super fancy version that I was going to get mugged for. The
Oyster Perpetual is a nice basic one, too, without the day/date functions. I
bought mine back in the early 1990s.

I will say that I found Rolexs’ don’t seem to be held in high regard by most
watch people. They require regular maintenance and can be easily buggered up by
an untrained repair person. Shane more or less reconditioned mine after it sat
for easily a decade. I gave it to the youngest son, who doesn’t wear it now,
either. At least not often, as far as I know. Just like Dad!

So Dan, what made you choose the particular Rolex you no longer wear?

Re: [MBZ] Becker radio codes

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Uh, yes it does. The code is in the VMI which is referenced by the VIN. You
give the dealer the VIN, they look up the VMI, which has the factory supplied
radio code in it.

That goes back well into the 1980s.

I’ve pasted a screen shot below of the VMI for my former 1990 350SDL’s VMI with
the radio code and serial number in it. As my posts with attachments typically
get stripped, it probably won’t show up, but I”m more than willing to forward
it to anyone who questions this.

Re: [MBZ] OT OK this just really p1$$e$ me off to no end

2021-06-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Local Frod dealer does this in their “$25 quicky oil change lane. When I used
to have a couple of Focii in the stable I would take them there for oil
changes, as it was cheaper than the local oil change place, and I knew the
materials would be better quality. A couple of times they went through the hard
core upsell thing until I told them I was a former NIASE certified mechanic
that didn’t currently have a place to the do the work myself. After that I just
got the, “Hey, looks like you’ve got a worn belt, want us to change it?” and we
were good. And I had them do some minor work, as I didn’t have time or a place
to do it then.

I agree, however, it’s clear they prey on various types of people to get work
into the shop.

Common dealer tactic, drum up a bunch of expensive repairs in the hopes
that you'll decide to just trade the vehicle in on a new car.

while a couple of years ago. It got recalled for the air bag inflators
so I went to the dealer.
They insisted on having the exact mileage so I read it out to him in the
drive through bay. He informed me that it needed an alignment. I told
him I did not really think so.
He did his best to persuade me and when I declined he insisted I sign a
waiver because it was dangerous not to do it and he did not want the
dealership to be liable.
I told him my son was a red seal licenced auto tech and I would discuss
the matter with him. Then he gave up.

Wife’s breast surgeon, a self-professed “boob guy”, is into fishing and Jeeps.
Like many doctors, he has the mechanical agility of a small child. He would
come into the exam room with his hand/fingers bandaged up on a regular basis,
the result of him “changing the oil in the Jeep last weekend.”

Her reconstructive surgeon, who works directly with this guy and socializes
with him, often pondered to us as to why he would risk damaging his hands since
they’re how he makes a living…

There are many times I don’t have my phone with me. Several years ago Santa
brought my an Apple Watch 3, that usurped my Shinola for everyday use. I am so
over the Apple Watch; seems silly to have, essentially, a second phone on your
wrist.
I feel I want something nice and substantial to wear to know the time….maybe.
It seems most of the watch guys are long gone.

[MBZ] it’s it the prettiest on the outside 1984 Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-Benz 300 SD Sedan 4D,$6,000

2021-06-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
it has a OM617 Diesel engine with a turbo on it. It does not go above 60
because it needs new tires and then it will go faster I’ve gotten up 110
with it but the car shakes when going past 60

The car does not need to be sold just seeking the market for it. It is
also one of few that are directly imported from Germany in the 80’s.

[MBZ] I'm going to get a new CP/TCM for the $900 04E500

2021-06-17 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
I went to a knacker yesterday and pulled a conductor plate from a nasty
pimped 04S500, looked like somebody had been in there before and
buggered it up.  It would have been $55,  I was going to see about
getting it reprogrammed for $250 but decided to bite the bullet and just
buy a new one rather than screwing around with an old nasty part, $850
programmed from an outfit in CA.  Anyway, all kinds of paperwork to fill
out as it is a theft-deterrent related part that has to be programmed to
match the car, and I have to send the old one back as a core.  So I'll
pull it this weekend and ship it off and see what sorts out.

The car is immensely entertaining to drive (when the trans was
intermittently working right) so maybe I'll have some fun with it for
awhile even though it is a totally boring color beige/beige. I'm
thinking with prices these days I'll have $1800 in the car and could
probably unload it for $4k-5k.
