Re: [MBZ] OT: Ghia notes

2021-08-06 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
Well the good news is it only takes about 30 minutes to get the engine out, and
another hour or two to split the engine block and see what's going on.

I'm trying to remember what's at the other end of that push rod and I'm drawing
a blank.

Either the cup at the outer end is bad, or something is loose.  I hope the
bolts aren't pulling out of the head, been there done that, but about 30 years
ago.

Re: [MBZ] Ghia spare tire

No crash damage that I can see. The 165x tire was just too tall. It was wedging
on the outer diameter more than the sidewalls. I guess I could try deflating it
some, but the spare is supposed to be overpressurized to run the windshield
washer (always thought that was a stupid hack on the part of VW).

Re: [MBZ] Vredestein tires, any good?

2021-08-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Interesting thread, it seems that some owners report that 165R15 tires fit in
the spare tire well, and some do not. I tried a wheel from my car, which has
Mastercraft (a budget brand) 165R15 tires currently, and it did not fit. So I
was assuming I'd need to get 155R15 for the spare and maybe stay with the
165R15 for the driving tires, or maybe go back to the original 155R15 for those
as well? Then I could fully rotate all 5 tires.

Or I guess I could order 4 of the 165R15 tires, check the fit in the spare tire
well, if it fits order one more, if not order the narrower size.

I didn't see Vredestein mentioned in that thread, unfortunately. I'll post a
question on their Karmann Ghia forum and see if anyone has experience with them.

[MBZ] 1981 380SL - 100k miles - $10,000

2021-08-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Much maintenance documented -- fixed everything but the odometer!

Nice color, looks clean but needs the original steering wheel put back IMO.

Re: [MBZ] Roof replacement and USAA

2021-08-06 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
First house I owned was built in the early 20th century. It must have had at
least 4 layers of shingles; I don't think it had ever had a tear-off. The roof
deck was boards, not plywood, installed with about 1-inch gaps between them.

The house had been re-sided at one point with Aluminum siding. It was a
bungalow style house with a covered front porch. After we had the roof torn off
and replaced, there was about a 1-inch gap between the bottom of the siding and
the top of the porch roof, that was the thickness of shingles removed.

The dumpster they ordered for the job turned out to be too small by about half,
because there were so many layers of old roofing.

Current code I think limits residential roof to 2 layers, one of the reasons is
so that firefighters can cut through the roof to vent smoke if needed.

True, but this is far more elegant of an approach, especially if you’re
changing a battery. You would be wrestling live battery cables around the
engine compartment while you’re trying to swap a battery.

Wings were pole construction. 1x4 decking, at about 50% coverage. (Easily see
lots of metal from below.)
All wood sourced from on-farm, IIRC. Extremely 'live', acoustically.

1972 would just have some vacuum valves in the intake system and the EGR. 1974

for a very steep roof, architectural shingles, white so they are Energy Star,
with full water and ice damn sheild on entire roof, and extra strapping for
protection against hurricanes.  Basically I paid for every extra I could except
a metal roof.  My house is two story, about 2400 square feet, complex roof.

Positive crankcase ventilation started in 65 I think, don't remember, and
