Re: [MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

2021-10-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
May or may not be relevant, but I had the ignition cylinder lock up on a Honda
Odyssey. Sidewinder style key, wafers. Locked up solid without warning, between
"Off/Locked" and "Accessory" positions. Could not turn either way or remove the
key. Fortunately the steering column was not locked.

Removed the steering column cover and was able to remove the switch from the
cylinder and start the car.

At home, removed the bracket holding the cylinder, was able to remove it and
get the key out. I disassembled it, and removed all the wafers, then
reassembled it and installed it. Looked completely normal but any key or even a
screwdriver would turn it. Anyone trying to steal the car would still have
needed the the key with the RFID chip to start it, so that was good enough for
me.

2021-10-23 Thread Scott Ritchey via Mercedes
I never opened an ignition cylinder but I have been inside w126 door locks.
The sidewinder style does not use pin-style tumblers like a typical home
lock. They use spring loaded split "wafers" that ride up and down the
profile cut into the sides of the key. When everything is "right" with the
key inserted, all the wafers ends are flush with the diameter of the
cylinder, allowing it to turn. I assume these split wafers come in standard
numbered sizes. It appeared to me that sticking from dirt and grease as
well as wear would be the main problem. Also, the door locks were crimped
together making a really neat repair difficult. On the other hand, bad
wafers could simply be removed if too worn and the lock would still work
(albeit less securte).

Subject: [MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

Greetings,

In case it is helpful for others, I'd like to relate my recent journey in
attempting to avert ignition tumbler failure on my '79 W116.120 (300SD). All
of the information below was confirmed with Tom Hanson at the Classic
Centre.

Ignition tumblers coded to the vehicle are no longer available for W116
models. Fortunately, it is still possible to order a generic "service"
ignition tumbler with a key that is not coded to the vehicle. The "service"
tumbler may actually use a different style of key. My W116 has the so-called
"sidewinder" key, but Tom mentioned that the service tumblers probably use
the more conventional-style keys used in 107/114/115/123 models. And by the
way, ignition tumblers for 107, 108, 114 and 115 are also NLA, even as an
uncoded service part. Only the later 123 tumblers remain available.

I also ordered two replacement keys that ARE coded to the vehicle. These are
still available, but under A2017600306 versus the original A0007600406, a
fact that my local dealer was unable to determine.

My plan is to remove the existing ignition tumbler, replace with the service
tumbler, then dismantle the old part. Sounds like the failure is caused by
wear of the lock pins, which then protrude and cause the tumbler to lock in
the housing. So I will take a look for that and make adjustments before
cleaning, lubricating, and reassembling the tumbler.

If I'm REALLY lucky, Tom is wrong and the "service" tumbler also uses a
sidewinder key. In that case, I will try to find a competent locksmith who
can modify the coding of the generic tumbler to match the vehicle keying.

I posted on this (R107) thread:

https://www.benzworld.org/threads/apparently-mb-no-longer-makes-the-ignition
-tumblers-for-our-cars-so.2067042/page-4

where there's a useful link to
https://www.coolcatcorp.com/Mercedes/Lock190.html and this thread
https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/modifying-w123-lock-cylinder-to-fit-w116/
which give you an idea of the internal construction of the tumbler.

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted as things progress. If anyone knows of a
competent automotive locksmith near San Francisco, please let me know!

D.

[MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

2021-10-23 Thread David Bruckmann via Mercedes
Greetings,

In case it is helpful for others, I'd like to relate my recent journey in
attempting to avert ignition tumbler failure on my '79 W116.120 (300SD). All of
the information below was confirmed with Tom Hanson at the Classic Centre.

Ignition tumblers coded to the vehicle are no longer available for W116 models.
Fortunately, it is still possible to order a generic "service" ignition tumbler
with a key that is not coded to the vehicle. The "service" tumbler may actually
use a different style of key. My W116 has the so-called "sidewinder" key, but
Tom mentioned that the service tumblers probably use the more
conventional-style keys used in 107/114/115/123 models. And by the way,
ignition tumblers for 107, 108, 114 and 115 are also NLA, even as an uncoded
service part. Only the later 123 tumblers remain available.

I also ordered two replacement keys that ARE coded to the vehicle. These are
still available, but under A2017600306 versus the original A0007600406, a fact
that my local dealer was unable to determine.

My plan is to remove the existing ignition tumbler, replace with the service
tumbler, then dismantle the old part. Sounds like the failure is caused by wear
of the lock pins, which then protrude and cause the tumbler to lock in the
housing. So I will take a look for that and make adjustments before cleaning,
lubricating, and reassembling the tumbler.

If I'm REALLY lucky, Tom is wrong and the "service" tumbler also uses a
sidewinder key. In that case, I will try to find a competent locksmith who can
modify the coding of the generic tumbler to match the vehicle keying.

I posted on this (R107) thread:

https://www.benzworld.org/threads/apparently-mb-no-longer-makes-the-ignition-tumblers-for-our-cars-so.2067042/page-4

where there's a useful link to
https://www.coolcatcorp.com/Mercedes/Lock190.html and this thread
https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/modifying-w123-lock-cylinder-to-fit-w116/
which give you an idea of the internal construction of the tumbler.

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted as things progress. If anyone knows of a
competent automotive locksmith near San Francisco, please let me know!

D.

Re: [MBZ] 2011 MB C300 Wheel Touch Uo Paint?

2021-10-23 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
Never tried finding touch-up paint for something that old, I would guess the
dealer or perhaps online if you know the color code. But if you are not
concerned about a perfect match maybe just go with the closest match at the
local auto parts store. On something 10 years old that's been exposed to sun
and weather, fresh paint is unlikely to be a perfect match to the existing
paint anyway, even if it's the original factory color.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting Trivia

2021-10-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
Talking to this guy at LKQ today he says his nephew (who is also A parts puller
there) bought a 2010 E430 (I think that was it) from a guy who brought it in to
sell as the air shocks (which I guess the car has) were collapsed and he didn’t
want to pay for new ones so he was going to sell it to LKQ. The nephew bought
it from him for $700. They were going to fix it this afternoon with shocks from
somewhere, then flip it. If it’s in decent shape that’s probably $6-7k at
least.

On several Benz models it is nearly impossible to remove the transmission from
the engine in the car. My brother's 75 W114 was like that, had two upper
transmission bolts missing, you can get them out but not back in with the
engine in the car.

Less likely to drop the transmission of a jack too.

Re: [MBZ] Why bother

2021-10-23 Thread Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes
I was paying the guy to pull the trans, it was easier to drop the front
steering frame then pull the whole deal. He had it up on the lift so I said I
should just get the whole deal. I went in and negotiated a bit, $600 for the
whole package. I don’t need it but the accessories are worth a good bit of I
need them at some point, alternator, AC compressor, coil packs, other bits. It
is mostly complete, someone grabbed a few bits off it.

I was tempted to grab the whole front steering set up too, has the rack in it.
I did pull the front air shocks too so have a spare set of those. New ones are
spendy, these look fine.

I have to go back tomorrow with my trailer to get the engine+trans, I’ll ask
what that whole front end would be.

Re: [MBZ] Interesting Trivia

2021-10-23 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It was a perfect storm, generated by the brains of those who lobby
congress... The great crash of 2008 left people out of work, broke, and
underwater on their house mortgages. They were not able to buy a new car
when the garage they would keep it in was in foreclosure.
Then, CFC program came out to sweep available cheap cars off the trading
floor and "stimulate" new car sales [remember Chevy was bankrupt?, and
Chrysler? Ford was the only car company with its head above water [barely]
Banks would not make car loans unless you were so rich you didn't need
one, because they were busted and living on "bailout money".
To force new car sales [stimulate was the magic word used] the government
bought and crushed anything that would run or tow into the CFC lot.
2009 through 2011 were lean years for car sales... and everyone else...
Then, slowly, people went back to work, banks loaned money, houses built
and sold, new cars
It's been a hard run since 2008 and the fallout is still falling out.
$10.00 per gallon gas [coming real soon] is another social engineering
program to stimulate EV car sales. [That magic word again "stimulate"] ...
more electric generation ignored to feed those EV cars..
Reporter: Dr. Einstein, what is the difference between ignorance and genius?
Dr. Einstein: There is no shortage of ignorance.
