Re: [MBZ] Shop air

2021-10-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I've done 3 shops now using schedule 40 PVC pipe, with drain valves below
each quick disconnect on a 24 inch stub, and have had zero issues with it.
No rust issues with PVC pipe and use the drain valves to blow down the
system frequently which keeps water condensate out of the air tools.
I also plumbed in a main system shutoff ball valve right at the compressor,
and made it part of the daily drill to shut off the compressor circuit
breaker and close the ball valve. I do this because I'm often gone for days
at a time and I don't want the compressor to run continuously should
anything happen with the air system while I'm away.
The systems in the first two shops are now owned by new owners, and they
are still working with no issues. Compressor working pressure is set at
160 PSI and schedule 40 is rated for burst pressure of 400 PSI for 3/4 PVC
pipe.
https://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/pvc-cpvc-pipes-pressures-d_796.html
Just follow the assembly protocol for gluing all the joints and fittings
and use plenty of mount clamps so it doesn't sag on long runs and you
should be up and running for a long time to come. Tip, always use a mount
clamp at each quick disconnect to reduce strain when you yank on the hose
from 30 ft away.

You could cheap out and use PEX and black iron or copper. You will have to
invest in the tools for PEX tubing though.

This young fellow used copper. At the present time, it would be too much money.

Another couple votes for PEX.

More motor mount questions:

Does anyone know if the motor mounts for a 115 and a 123 are the same?

My issue is that my car is a 1976 115 300D. Mercedes started making the
123 in late 1976 so both models were available that year.

Do I need to find ones expressly for the 115? That is proving more
difficult to do. I have tried searching for 1975 instead of 1976 but
there does not seem to be much offered.

Neither FCP Euro nor Autohaus AZ lists motor mounts for the 115.

MBZ has Uro.

Rockauto has different ones for 1975 than 1976. The ones listed for 1975
are sort of no-name things I have never heard of so likely Chinese or?
They have Anchor and Pioneer brands listed for the 1975 300D.

I think 1/2" OD would be pretty constricting for any high-volume applications
such as large impact wrenches or painting. That's probably 3/8" ID at best,
likely less.

Look at the highest CFM requirements of the tools you would be using and see
what diameter piping you need given the length of the tube/pipe run between
your compressor and the work location.

slowly to get the bolts to line up with the access port, which may be

Re: [MBZ] Pulling torque converter?

2021-10-24 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
yeah OK I just went and looked at it, there is a little plastic cover at
the bottom forward of the starter ring gear.  So I would have to get the
engine up a bit as you say and then go at the bolts through that hole.
I guess I don't need to get it off now, not that big a deal but good to
know if I do need to pull it off.  Once I get it moved off the trailer
and stored it should be up enough to get in there.  That will be for
another day.

I did put a big socket on the crank and spun the engine, so at least it
does that!

Thanks! It's fun learning about this aspect, I have never gone at a
transmission before like this.  I'm going to pull off the valve body and
conductor plate and send it off.  At least I can pick up the trans, it's
a good workout!

Likely, you will need to lift the engine up and set it on wood blocks of

slowly to get the bolts to line up with the access port, which may be
covered by a dust cover of some sort.

On the ones I worked on, the access port/hole was centered on the bottom of
the mounting flange, covered with a dust plate - access looking to the rear
from the front side. yes, you'll need to lift the engine to get to it, and
be able to rotate the crank to get all the bolts, usually two per ear the

In your photo you can _see_ the feet on the TC, that would
have to go to the (thin, spring steel) flex plate. Should be bolt
heads there, facing forwards. Usually accessed through a
hole in what is currently sitting on your trailer floor.

Like Jim said.
Flex plate bolts to crankshaft like a flywheel in a manual transmission
car.
TQ bolts to flex plate, covers the crank bolts so you have to remove the

Scott you just helped me to understand how the sidewinder keys work. I'd never
visualized it before since I've never had one apart but I can now see in my
mind how the wafers work.
Assuming they're somewhat like the wafers in a 123 you could also modify (grind
off) the outside of the wafers to fit the lock allowing you to use wafers that
aren't quite right.

The sidewinder style does not use pin-style tumblers like a typical home
lock.  They use spring loaded split "wafers" that ride up and down the
profile cut into the sides of the key.  When everything is "right" with the
key inserted, all the wafers ends are flush with the diameter of the
cylinder, allowing it to turn.  I assume these split wafers come in standard
numbered sizes.  It appeared to me that sticking from dirt and grease as
well as wear would be the main  problem.  Also, the door locks were crimped
together making a really neat repair difficult.  On the other hand, bad
wafers could simply be removed if too worn and the lock would still work
(albeit less securte).

Subject: [MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

Greetings,

In case it is helpful for others, I'd like to relate my recent journey in
attempting to avert ignition tumbler failure on my '79 W116.120 (300SD). All
of the information below was confirmed with Tom Hanson at the Classic
Centre.

Ignition tumblers coded to the vehicle are no longer available for W116
models. Fortunately, it is still possible to order a generic "service"
ignition tumbler with a key that is not coded to the vehicle. The "service"
tumbler may actually use a different style of key. My W116 has the so-called
"sidewinder" key, but Tom mentioned that the service tumblers probably use
the more conventional-style keys used in 107/114/115/123 models. And by the
way, ignition tumblers for 107, 108, 114 and 115 are also NLA, even as an
uncoded service part. Only the later 123 tumblers remain available.

I also ordered two replacement keys that ARE coded to the vehicle. These are
still available, but under A2017600306 versus the original A0007600406, a
fact that my local dealer was unable to determine.

My plan is to remove the existing ignition tumbler, replace with the service
tumbler, then dismantle the old part. Sounds like the failure is caused by
wear of the lock pins, which then protrude and cause the tumbler to lock in
the housing. So I will take a look for that and make adjustments before
cleaning, lubricating, and reassembling the tumbler.

If I'm REALLY lucky, Tom is wrong and the "service" tumbler also uses a
sidewinder key. In that case, I will try to find a competent locksmith who
can modify the coding of the generic tumbler to match the vehicle keying.

I posted on this (R107) thread:

https://www.benzworld.org/threads/apparently-mb-no-longer-makes-the-ignition

https://forum.w116.org/mechanicals/modifying-w123-lock-cylinder-to-fit-w116/
which give you an idea of the internal construction of the tumbler.

Anyway, I'll keep you all posted as things progress. If anyone knows of a
competent automotive locksmith near San Francisco, please let me know!

Re: [MBZ] W116 ignition tumbler and key

2021-10-24 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've never worked on a sidewinder key but the conventional keys used in a 123
are VERY easy to work on. On those I don't think the ignition wears out
per-say, I think cruft gets in and gums them up until they can't turn anymore.
The driver's door on my '83 240D got so bad I had to cut it apart to get the
wafers out.On that same car the ignition got sticky so I took it apart, cleaned
it thoroughly with alcohol to remove all traces of old graphite etc, lubed with
Houdini lock lube and re-assembled. It lasted the year until a failed oil
cooler line junked the car.

The trick on a 123 is having enough of the wafers to build the lock you want. A
couple junkyard door locks from different cars would do the job or you could
just use fewer wafers. It's unlikely somebody is going to pick the ignition
lock on your car anyway...

Re: [MBZ] 50 months @ 3k, Down payment of $50k 2021 Mercedes Benz S580 No Credit Check $50k down Every1 Approved - $50, 000 (Miami)

2021-10-24 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
It's got your name all over it, just throw down 50K and 3K a month for 50
months and the big black men won't come break your kneecaps when they
repossess it.
Seems fair? Does the car insurance policy come with full health insurance?

The funny part is, RockAuto has a Made in America flag on the
Beck-Arnley transmission mount but not the motor mounts.

My surprise purchase from an old respected USA nameplate:
Remy alternator, about half the cost of Bosch. The pictures that Remy
supplied to Rock included one where you could see the regulator, which
said "Bosch Made in England" on it.

Awesome, I think I'll buy it.
And now my ML has a Remy Made in China alternator in it.
3 years later it's working fine, and I guess I can't complain, but the
one I took out was not Bosch or Valeo, and had crumbling wires to the
windings in it. I hope my Remy isn't the same quality as the prior
replacement alternator.
