[MBZ] Cheap tires

The summer tires on the Saturn have seen better days, and I was afraid I 
wouldn't be able to get any sort of rim covers for $50 if I waited until 
April, so I bought these today. Only thing I see really wrong with them 
is it looks like they made a 480 treadwear tire out of 700 treadwear 
rubber but reduced the tread to 9/32".


Oh, well, H rated 15" for $195 with tax and mounting. I'll supply USA 
made stems and take them to Farm Bureau for $5x4 balancing. Walmart 
wants $15x4 for balancing and lifetime rotations.

[MBZ] The pair of 115s

After I got home from my colonoscopy, I was told not to drive or do 
anything today so I unloaded the red 76 off the trailer and into the 
shop.  Had a better look at it and it will need some rust work.  Looks 
like it may need some floor board work.  I still think its worth saving 
so we shall see.  After that, I went and picked up the 69 220D.  Holy 
moly this car is WAY WAY WAY nicer than I thought it was as I was more 
interested in the red car.  In fact, even as it sits I bet it would sell 
for $3-4k easy.  Get it running and somewhat sorted out, no telling.


What I know so far.  Red 76 300D has more rust than I thought. The seats 
are crunchy and will need new seat pads probably front and rear.  Both 
side pieces on the bottom of the rear bench is chewed threw by rats or 
something.  I think I have a good bench for it.   The carpet on this car 
is something aftermarket. Basically the original bottom mats with the 
molded backing is gone and its just some sort of velour.  Need to remedy 
this.  I think I MAY have a set of these, same color but will have to 
look.  I knew that stash of 115 parts would come in handy some day.  If 
I want it to be really nice, will need to find some replacement dash 
wood for it.  Will need to fix the floor boards.  Looks like it might 
have been painted at some point and has some spots where the paint has 
flaked off and rusting.   Basically to fix it right this would need to 
be sanded down and car would probably need a repaint.  May just get it 
running and flip it, but I sure do love the color. Will need both front 
and rear windshield seals replaced.


The 69 supposedly had its engine rebuilt not too long before it was 
parked.  Interior is very nice, seats are fine, carpet is fine.  I have 
not found any rust on it yet.  The clutch pedal is down so needs work on 
that.  Will need both front and back windshield seals replaced.  I will 
probably be keeping this one for a while.  Will throw batteries in them 
this weekend, probably get a plastic bottle with diesel to run them off 
of and see if they start.  If the glow plugs work, I bet there is a good 
chance they will.

I’ve done this on cars I wasn’t interested in. That is, I went to look at one 
and decided I didn’t want it. I’ll usually offer advice to address issues, 
deficiencies or offer marketing ideas if the owner seems interested. It’s the 
right thing to do in my mind. Of course, there have been some I wouldn’t give 
the time of day to if they were asses, even if there was a simple fix.

Exactly.  Even considered selfishly, assery makes it less likely that you
can buy other such vehicles in the future.

My bet is that it's the CPS, and if it isn't it probably needs one soon anyway.
That and the can of WD-40, and maybe you're golden.

Our suddenly cantankerous and strand-ey E320 has behaved flawlessly since
the CPS was replaced.  Good thing it had only ever done it to me, else the wife
probably would not drive it.

The ignition key won't fit in the tray lock on the ML (and on the E too, 
now that I remember trying that, and just did again), it is some smaller 
kind of key like a padlock key.  I drove by a locksmith the other day 
somewhere I will have to remember where, then go by there again and get 
them to unlock it, maybe make a key?

Once upon a time they had valet keys that could not be pushed
into the trunk and glove box keyholes.  All locks were keyed alike,
it was just the key shanks that were 'special'.

That's exactly what I was thinking, or some connector got knocked 
loose.  Get the CPS, show up, do the deal for less, pop the CPS on in 
the street or driveway in 15min and drive the thing home and they will 
feel screwed but think you're some kind of genius.  Or then say they can 
have it back for $500 more which is what the stealer or a shop would 
screw them for.  Tank you berry mooch!

money to fix. Car is absolutely loaded! no accidents, new tires, brakes, etc... 
$2800 cash will buy it.. bring your mechanic here if you want to look at it.

Once upon a time they had valet keys that could not be pushed
into the trunk and glove box keyholes.  All locks were keyed alike,
it was just the key shanks that were 'special'.

Does it not go in?   Or does it not turn?  Maybe this is another bit
of elegance that went away when the bean counters took over.

It turns out the 05ML500 has a pass side drawer but it is locked.  I 
think I saw that when I got and it was locked and forgot about it.  I 
should try to jimmy the lock and see if there is anything interesting in 
there.  No telling what the DAPO left in there, I found what I surmise 
was his wife's DL in the console under some crap.

I took at class at an art colony (The Steel Yard in Providence) one time. It 
improved my welding a bunch. Having an expert look over your shoulder and make 
suggestions was very helpful.

Art welding was actually more useful than I expected, we welded mostly rusty 
(read "free") junk which is what I mostly weld anyway...

The 164 has a pass side drawer. It’s locked as is the dash box. Might be full

Interesting. I know my ML500 had a passenger side drawer, not sure about the
