Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
I used to have two wood stoves going most of the time. I obtained free firewood - cut to length logs dumped on my driveway by tree cutting crews in the neighborhood. I would listen for the chain saws, track down the work crew, and then offer to save them a trip to a landfill. Worked great plus I got a workout splitting the wood (usually oak). Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
They're definitely simpler and easier to live with. Make sure you have an alternate source of electricity so if/when the power is out you still have heat. Downside of pellets is they don't store well long term. As far as I know there is no binder in them, they're just held together with pressure. Fortunately when the degrade they just become sawdust, easy cleanup. Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 02:37:12 PM EST, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes wrote: I think I wouldn’t mind a pellet stove. They look capable, yet understated. Clean lines. Nothing newer looks as good, IMHO. The Cummins and the V10 are more than capable of doing any pulling I need, and both engines have excellent longevity reputations. I foresee no reason to _ever_ replace them. The neighbor has one, too. We just used his tailgate yesterday as a worktable upon which to resurrect my Hobart 135 wire-feed welder, the loaner. (He'd borrowed it and broken it.) Mine's working again, and we started in on his broken $50 Hobart, same model. (He bought it for parts, to fix mine, but I think we can get them both working. I'm handy that way.) The neighbor's truck was getting pretty beat up, what with its heavy use, getting sideswiped by some dolt, and rolled onto its side by his son. Rather than replace it he opted to replace the bed, have the necessary body work done, and repaint. It looks good, but not 'too good to use'. Costs mostly covered by the dolt's insurance, along with careful shopping. Re: [MBZ] And now for the gas shortages
Can't help but think that there will be more low life folks sneaking around in the night stealing fuel from your vehicles too. I park my truck outside of the garage on a back lane so I half expect to find I have been robbed of gas over night. I hope they just stick a hose down the filler and don't drill a hole in my gas tank. Years ago, I had an old Chevy truck that I parked at the lane. It was drained so often that I got to where I would run to the pumps every time I needed to use it and put in $5. One time they sucked it so dry that I couldn't get it to the gas station. Locking gas caps didn't help. They just twisted them off with some sort of wrench or pliers. For a while I had parts of the broken caps in the tank that would slide back and forth when I turned corners. 1968 Chevy so it had the tank behind the seat and the filler beside the driver's door. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
Even without a catalyst most (all?) new stoves have secondary burn that will burn off most of the volitiles. My stove is an older Jotul 118, probably from the '80s. It's got a big secondary burn chamber which also recovers heat from that stuff being burnt off. Once it's burning good it rarely produces any smoke. Mostly just around reloads and then only for a minute or two. That of course assumes good, dry wood. -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 01:00:11 PM EST, Randy Bennell via Mercedes wrote: A wood stove fire is sort of nice if you are going to sit around the stove feeling the heat and hearing the fire crackle. Dunno, the Germans said they won't sanction Russian oil: https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Oil-Prices-Sink-As-Germany-Takes-A-Stance-Against-Ban-On-Russian-Crude.html It seems to me like if we (the global we) were really serious about this thing we (again globally) need to sanction everything. I would think "shock and awe" of full sanctions would be much more effective, and quicker, than this piecemeal effect. We know sanctions hurt the average person more than the people who really need to feel the pinch so it seems to me going full bore and getting it over with makes more sense than limping in sanctions a little at a time. -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 12:54:41 PM EST, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: Crude oil just posted at $130 per barrel. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
We're fortunate to have a small house with the wood stove in the basement. It heats up the floors and thus the upstairs. Our bedroom is the farthest room from the stove and thus the coldest. To heat that room up I vacuum the bedroom. We've got central vac, the canister for which is in the basement by the stove. The vac sucks cold air out of the bedroom and pressurizes the basement which forces warm air up the basement vent. Works a treat... -Curt On Monday, March 7, 2022, 12:28:24 PM EST, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: True, but I feel just as good about turning up the thermostat, more so than lugging wood into the house from outside several times a day, having to light/start a fire every morning, and cleaning out the wood stove and dumping ashes daily. -D > On Mar 7, 2022, at 12:22 PM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > On Mon, Mar 7, 2022, at 12:18 PM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: > >> With a gas bill of under $100/month in the coldest part of the year >> it’s difficult to justify the time and effort to burn firewood, not to >> mention it’s not exactly the most efficient or cleanest way to heat, >> either. > > It is a lot more work, and does emit some smoke/particulate pollution, > but it is carbon-neutral! Possibly. I’ve heard of people having to replace rear wheel bearings on these. The tires are very limited as far as availability, they’re a weird size that only a couple manufacturers make. I had one that was bad on my former ML500 beater that made a lot of noise. Had a really bizarre wear pattern for some reason but the replacement never had an issue in the time I owned it. -D > On Mar 7, 2022, at 11:59 AM, Allan Streib via Mercedes > wrote: > > "there is a sound from the rear at higher speeds" > > Could just be tires I guess, but I was thiking wheel bearing? > > > On Mon, Mar 7, 2022, at 10:58 AM, dan penoff.com via Mercedes wrote: >> Most are relatively simple stuff, except maybe the coolant leak. >> Exhaust hangers are simple, and the lock issue is likely the “machine >> gun” problem these all experience. >> >> $1500-$1800 is about where it should fall, I would think. >> >> -D >> >>> On Mar 7, 2022, at 10:50 AM, Allan Streib via Mercedes >>> wrote: >>> >>> Seller seems honest, but I think the ask is too high given the problems. >>> >>> https://chambana.craigslist.org/cto/d/seymour-2000-mercedes-ml430-awd/7454951209.html >>> >>> ___ >>> http://www.okiebenz.com >>> >>> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >>> >>> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >>> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com >>> >> >> ___ >> http://www.okiebenz.com >> >> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >> >> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices
We ran the wood stove for a few days to see how it would go, and while it made that part of the house “toasty”, there was no good way to distribute the heat throughout the rest of the house. The wood stove is in the far corner of a former 2 car garage that was converted to living space many years ago. As a result, there’s limited airflow from the HVAC system out there, so there’s no viable way to “push” the heated air into the rest of the house. I tried using a box fan to blow air from the are to the rest of the house, but again, it wasn’t terribly efficient and didn’t really make a significant difference, even with using the HVAC blower to move air around. That and it consumed wood at a crazy rate. I have a couple of those big canvas “carriers” you use to carry wood around, and it would easily go through one to one and a half of those in wood in a day. In the week or two that we ran it, just during the day, I probably went through a 1/4 of a cord or more. You can get free wood for the taking from parts of the National Forests around here, but it goes really fast as one might expect. That and I don’t really have the means to collect and manage a large volume of firewood, unless I get a trailer for the ML. With a gas bill of under $100/month in the coldest part of the year it’s difficult to justify the time and effort to burn firewood, not to mention it’s not exactly the most efficient or cleanest way to heat, either. Thankfully, we’ve got double-pane windows but I don’t think they’re anything fancy with gas between the panes. One advantage of multi-pane windows is cutting down on noise, too. -D > On Mar 7, 2022, at 11:23 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes > wrote: > > _All_ we did was double up the attic blown-in insulation. I've been slowly adding insulation to our attic. This week I plan to go get the rest, I've got a bunch of Home Depot gift cards... I've been using unfaced fiberglass laid perpendicular to the existing fiberglass. The rafters are 2x6 so like R19, I'm adding R30. Re: [MBZ] Gas prices and when will they affect used car prices

It’s their choice. I dealt with that when I was a field tech with the school system. Cheap bastards gave you two choices: Accept their paltry mileage reimbursement on a monthly basis, or just put in for it yourself with your taxes. I did both, which seemed to confuse them. I claimed the difference between what they paid and the IRS reimbursement. It wasn’t much, but it was a matter of principle. -D > On Mar 6, 2022, at 10:21 PM, Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes > wrote: > > Currently we receive .575 per mile on expense reports.
